The Seven Stages of (Hockey) Grief

What are the seven stages of grief? Which one is bargaining? I think when it comes to the Bruins’ moves at the NHL trade deadline earlier today I have reached the bargaining stage of hockey grief.

Like… maybe I can talk Don Sweeney out of some of these awful moves. Maybe if I explain to him how trading Brad Marchand (and Coyle and Carlo and Frederic and Brazeau) leaves your team without any identity. Maybe I could explain to him how trading the team captain to the team that bounced us out of the playoffs is literally (not figuratively, but literally) a kick in the balls.

Yeah, this sucks.

NOOOO!!!!!

Brad Marchand to Florida? To the freakin’ Panthers? Noooo!!!! Say it ain’t so!!!!???

I knew the NHL trade deadline was going to completely suck ass today, as a Bruins fan, and I knew there was a good chance Marchand was going to go away, but to Florida? Within the effing division? The rumors all had him going out West somewhere. You know, to some team I could root for in place of my Bruins when they fail to make the playoffs for the first time in ages?

This SUCKS.

Add to that, Trent Frederick goes to Edmonton, which we knew about because it happened a couple of days ago, we lost Justin Brazeau to the Wild this morning which blows. At the last minute though we lost Marchand and Charlie Coyle to the Avalanche, and in another unbelievable kick in the nuts, Brandon Carlo to Toronto? The effin’ Leafs? In the division again? Are you kidding me?

I don’t even know what we’re getting back in any of these deals. We better be so heavily stocked with draft picks that we start cranking out hall of famers left and right. Oh, but then we have to look at Don Sweeney’s illustrious draft history and… well, let’s hope we got a ton of A list prospects rather than draft picks.

This sucks! A shitty hockey year gets even shittier. I wanted to root for Brad Marchand in the post season, but he’s going to play for fucking Florida and I hate the fucking Florida Panthers! I guess I could be an Avs fan, or an Oilers fan. I guess. Blah.

Late

I had a million things to do before work this morning, then a million things to do during work, then a million things to do after work… so obviously I was going to oversleep, right?

Frustrated sigh.

Oh well. The big question for Friday mornings these days is do I watch the new episode of Severance while I do my morning exercise, or do I watch the new episode of Yellowjackets. Today I went with Yellowjackets. No spoilers for season three episode five, but if there is one thing that show needs (a lot) more of, it is PJ Harvey music. I started watching Severance (season two episode eight, I think) but I haven’t the faintest clue what’s going on. I’ll finish it before I sleep tonight. Promise.

We had a contractor at the house yesterday. We have another one coming this morning, any minute now, and we have another one coming this afternoon. Things are getting weird around here.

What else was I going to mention this morning? Oh yeah, I woke up at about 4:00am this morning. I think it was the wind that woke me. It was blowing around like a hurricane out there. It was bad enough that it knocked over the bird feeder. I have to fix it, but the ground is still frozen so it might have to wait a little while. It’s March so the thaw out is coming, but it’s not coming soon enough for me.

Today is also the NHL trade deadline. I expect it’s going to be a sad day for Boston Bruins fans as we’re far enough out of the playoff picture that we will be sellers. Here’s hoping for a lot of high draft picks while also hoping that none of my favorite Bruins get dealt away. Fingers crossed.

Apple Music just let me know that there’s a new Bob Mould album released today. I’ll give that a listen while stressing about everything under the sun. Sounds good to me.

The first contractor has arrived. I’d best let him in…………

NHL Trade Deadline Day

Happy NHL Trade Deadline, everyone! Is this a National Holiday in Canada? It should be. It should be here in the US too. We shouldn’t have to work while monitoring the internets to see if our teams picked up any new players.

The Boston Bruins appear to have snagged a depth forward from Minnesota. Pat Maroon. I don’t know anything about this guy except that he seems to have one three of the last five Stanley Cups? WhatWhatWhat???

Granted… one of those cups was with St Louis… who beat the Bruins in the final. That kinda pisses me off. Dude better score seven goals in the first game he plays for us. Seriously.

I’m not expecting much from Boston today. They don’t have much to trade away, assuming they want to keep the current roster in place. There are rumors of them dealing one of the goalies… I don’t want that. We have an ace goalie tandem right now and I don’t want to screw with that.

Let’s see what happens.

Happy Trade Deadline Day, everyone! Go Bruins!

NHL Trade Deadline

I was 100% sure that today was the NHL trade deadline. I was going to write a post about today being christmas-esque with both the trade deadline and the premier of season three of The Mandalorian.

Nope, the trade deadline is Friday March 3, 2023.

How could I be so wrong? How could I have been so sure I was right and still be wrong?

I am a failure as a hockey fan.

Happy Nerd News on a Busy Morning

Today has been a touch on the nutso-busy side. Not a complaint, just a statement. Good things are going on, they are just taking up time.

I haven’t had the opportunity to post anything yet today, which is a little unusual. I haven’t been able to comment on how trading off one of my favorite Red Sox players has resulted in two wins against a World Series contender. What? How does that work? I haven’t been able to mention how I am suddenly kind of a San Diego Padres fan. Holy murderers row, Batman!

I had to take a second and write this post though because I just got an email from the photo lab and they sent me the scans of my four rolls of film. I’ve only looked at a couple of images so far, just to make sure they came out, and WOW do the ones I’ve looked at look good! Pics from Dad’s Pentax and from the Ebay Nikon both look excellent. My lunch break will see me getting everything up onto Flickr, but hot damn am I happy right now! Film-Photographically-Happy to be precise.

WOOHOO!

Admitted for the Night

My mother is still in the hospital. She’ll be there overnight. She has a UTI but she’s in a lot of pain. They are admitting her. That’s a good thing, I think, but she’s not happy about it.

Work has been stressful AF today, as the kids these days like to say. That combined with my mother’s situation has been enough to keep me from stressing over my own doctor’s appointment tomorrow. I am going to see the Cardiologist. I need Psych, Cardiology, and Dietary to sign off on my weight loss surgery. Psych is all set. Cardiology is next. Dietary will be on going for a while longer. I don’t know how much longer, I just know it’s on going.

I don’t know what they are going to do to me tomorrow. I’m assuming an EKG or something. I have my fingers crossed that it won’t involve a stress test. I need this to go well. I’m not feeling the terror I usually feel leading up to an appointment, but it’ll probably come soon enough.

The contractor is coming back this afternoon. There’s another one coming tomorrow. After that? I don’t know. My in-the-office day will be Wednesday this week instead of Thursday. That’s probably going to mess up my internal calendar in a big way. I’ll live.

Okay. Lunch break over. Back to work.

PS: It’s NHL trade deadline day today and the Bruins just picked up another defenseman. Also, I heard they extended DeBrusk? The guy who’s been asking for a trade all year. Interesting. I’m cool with that.

Okay, now back to work.

Jon Lester

Don’t act surprised.

Were you not paying attention?

The Red Sox are going to trade Jon Lester either today or tomorrow and it’s been pretty much a given that the deal would happen since the Red Sox tried to open contract negotiations with Lester prior to the start of this abysmal season.

Every pundit on the planet agreed that signing Lester would take at least 20 million dollars a year over at least five years, and that includes a home town discount. The Red Sox initial offer? Four years at a total of 70 million dollars. Not only did Lester’s people ignore it, but they were so floored by how completely unrealistic it was that they were never able to figure out how to counter it. The offer was so insulting that it effectively ended negotiations before they started.

After seeing that, how could you possibly expect that this would end with anything other than Lester getting traded at the deadline?

The question now becomes, if we trade him now will he sign with us in the off season?

My thought is: No.

If we weren’t going to put up the money to keep him last off season, why should anyone expect us to put up the money next off season?

The (two time World Series hero) Jon Lester era will be coming to an end within the next 31 hours or so.

NHL Trade Deadline Postscript

Chiarelli, Bruins Fulfill Intention of Bolstering Defensive Corps – Boston Bruins – Blog

Well if Peter Chiarelli calls Andrej Meszaros bolstering the defensive corps then I guess we have to take his word for it.  Personally I’m not so sure.  It seems clear the guys he wanted all went elsewhere at surprisingly low cost.  Why couldn’t we get anyone better when we had the same picks and prospects that other teams sent in their trades?  I don’t know.

Meszaros might be a decent pick up.  He was paired with Zdeno Chara on the Slovakian team in the Olympics, as well as in the distant past in Ottawa.  More likely he’ll fill the same roll he filled in Philly:  Healthy scratch.

On the upside, we just saw seven deer in the woods behind the house.  We also saw a chipmunk but I don’t think that was related.
