Why is Cobra Kai a Good Show?

Jen and I just finished the new season of Cobra Kai on Netflix.

My question for the universe: Why is Cobra Kai a good show? I don’t get it. The premise is utterly idiotic. It’s basically based on a gag from the show How I Met Your Mother where one character wrongly thought that the bad guy in many famous movies is really the good guy and Johnny Lawrence in The Karate Kid was a tragic hero instead of a stereotypical 80’s movie villain.

So why is it good? Also, it functions on the suspension of disbelief that an entire region of California is out of their brains obsessed with high school karate tournaments. Like…. No!

Everything about the show should be awful at worst and just dumb at best.

But it’s not. It’s absolutely riveting! It’s so good!

Why???? I don’t understand!!

I am Bad Luck Again

It happens so often. I’m doing something and I put on a Bruins game and they immediately give up a goal. More often than not they give up the lead as well.

Tonight Jen and I had dinner, chicken and quinoa and roasted green beans, and then watched an episode of Cobra Kai. After that we had a watch party with Harry to see the new episode of The Book of Boba Fett. I approve of the episode in general but I am kinda done with the two time period stuff. I know how he escaped I know how he survived, now I just want to see The Sopranos in Space… except for the scooter kids. I’m done with them too.

What was I talking about?

Oh yeah, The Bruins. So after the watch party Jen went to the office to play some Warcraft and kill some bad guys. I retired to the bed room to put away some laundry and watch episode seven of Yellowjackets (WHAT THE FUCK IS HAPPENING??). I opened up the NHL app on my phone and brought up the game cast (or whatever they call it) and saw the Bruins had a 2-1 lead over the Capitals. Awesome. As soon as the superlative formed in my tiny little brain the screen refreshed and Washington had tied the game at two.

Damn it.

Come on, Bruins. Let’s turn this around.

Hallway

We are working on setting up a watch party so Jen, Harry, and I can watch episode four of Hawkeye together. In the meantime, given all of the DareDevil and Kingpin hype of the past few days, I have decided to start watching the Netflix DareDevil series again. Let’s say season one, at least.

In honor of this nerd avalanche, here is The Hallway Scene. About five and a half minutes of one steady cam shot that is as close as Marvel will ever come to freakin’ ballet.

Kingpin in Hawkeye?

Speaking of tomorrow’s episode of Hawkeye, are we going to see Wilson Fisk? Aka Kingpin? More specifically, are we going to see Kingpin played by Vincent D’Onofrio?

There were stories galore this week about MCU head Kevin Feige confirming that Charlie Cox will at some point reprise his role as Matt Murdock, aka DareDevil from the freakin masterpiece of a Netflix series. Vincent D’Onofrio killed it as Kingpin in that series and there are comic connections between that character and Hawkeye’s Echo.

I think we have three episodes left. Fingers crossed we finally see the MCU legitimize the Marvel Netflix shows. We know DareDevil is coming back in some way. What about Jessica Jones and Luke Cage and The Punisher and all of the assorted characters included in those shows? (and Iron Fist too, I guess… I guess)

All of the Netflix shows were ended way before their time. Disney+ needs to bring them back to life.

While they are at it they can give us more Quake and the rest of the Agents of Shield cast. Bring it on!

For reference.

Stay at Home Day

Today is a simple pandemic shelter in place day. I am staying home and not going anywhere. The work day is 33 minutes away and I have a truck load of stuff to do today. After work I don’t go to my parents so I’ll make a big dinner for me and the love of my life and take the opportunity to get some stuff done at home.

One big focus will be evaluating the current lake asshole situation in the cellar. We are still getting enough rain that I can’t rule out the ground water level as the source of the mini floods, but at this point I am really leaning toward something inside leaking. Hopefully within the next week or so we can get someone out to take a look and see if they can find the root cause. Until then, wet vac plus dehumidifier equals a false sense of security.

I might try to get some musical therapy in tonight. Not sure. I actually had a 45-60 minute window last night where I could have done something/anything and I chose to watch an episode of Toast of London (I still have seven to go and it looks like today is the last day it’s on Netflix. I thought it was being removed today but I just refreshed my Netflix tab and it’s still there. Unless I’m just seeing the cache?) and play a video game. Star Wars: The Old Republic. On a scale of 1-10 I give it a four. Maybe a 3.5. I am playing a Jedi character and he doesn’t have a light saber yet. Maybe once I get that far in the story I’ll give it a higher rating. At my current point, still super early in the story, I do get to slaughter bad guys in an awfully un-Jedi like manner so… it’s okay. For music, I do know that I am currently slightly behind the pace I kept in the two years that I finished 50/90 as far as completed mixes goes, but I think I might be a smidge ahead overall. Who cares. I’m hoping to make a big push this weekend. We’ll see. Still lots of shite going on.

Want a blog stats update? Sure you do! Always remembering that if you have one of a thing and add another of that thing you can rightfully state that you have a huge, dramatic increase… know what I mean? When I talk of growing numbers, they are still very small numbers. Right? Right. I’ve mentioned in the past that my total page views per month stat took a huge jump at the start of the year. January blew away my previous monthly high, then May beat the record by a very tiny bit, then June shattered the record again. July didn’t beat it but it was so close that we can call it a virtual tie. How’d August do? Well, with 15+ hours to go… it shattered June’s record. I don’t know what I am doing to get people to visit, and I am pretty sure most of the page views are spam-related, but thanks for coming folks. I hope I am not boring you to death… I’m pretty sure I am boring everyone to death.

Okay, I am going to punch into work and get my day started. Happy Tuesday, everyone. Wear a mask, wash your hands, practice social distance, get the vaccine if you haven’t already. Be a decent human being and not a selfish, nazi shit.

Binge Watch Troubles

Years ago we watched a show on Netflix called The IT Crowd. It was really funny. Years later I saw an episode of Community with one of the IT Crowd cast members and thought it was really funny. Then I started watching What We Do in the Shadows with that same IT Crowd actor in it and that show is fucking riotous. The actor’s name is Matt Berry and I started wondering if maybe he was the funniest person on Earth. Could be. I’m not sure. I heard about a BBC show he co-wrote and starred in called Toast of London that is on Netflix. I started watching, for research of course. It’s funny. Not nearly as funny as the other shows though. It’s very English. Like… IT Crowd was super English, but Toast of London is Englisher. At least English in the way that a douche bag from the US like me would think is English.

Whatever, it’s funny even if it isn’t as funny as The IT Crowd. The reason I’m writing about it is that there are three seasons on Netflix. One has seven episodes, two and three have six each. I finished the first season today and then found out that Netflix is dropping the show on the 31st. Muthapussbucket! Can I rage through the second and third seasons (12 episodes) before the 31st?

Challenge accepted. Though the answer is no, I am not going to finish before Netflix pulls it.

Half Day

I still have a ton of stuff going on at work, but I also have a half day today (dr. appointment in the afternoon). I’m going to have some time to kill and I want to try and fill it with something more productive than Netflix, although the second season of Black Summer* is out and the reviews are good.

I already started the laundry. I already started the dishes. I already took out the trash. I already made the bed. I already shaved off a week’s worth of facial hair and let me tell you it feels wonderful to not be itchy anymore.

I probably won’t have time for an eye exam. I don’t think I’ll have time to wait in line for a car inspection. If I could guarantee a quick turn around I could definitely do it, but if there’s a line… nope. Maybe I can sneak in a hair cut. That would help. It has been 55 days. 7.8 weeks. I am definitely due. Maybe.

Who am I kidding… I am going to watch stupid Black Summer, aren’t I.

*I watched the first season of Black Summer without knowing what it was. Had I known it was connected to Zombie Nation I would have taken a hard pass, but fortunately the tone of the show wasn’t stupid like Z Nation. Although two of the eight episodes were among the dumbest things I’ve ever subjected myself to. I swear the last two seasons of Fear the Walking Dead are a “hold my beer” response to the episode in the school and the one with the heist. The rest of the season was pretty good though, and a couple of the episodes were great.

Another Song for May

Things have been pretty quiet here on Nana Sitting duty. She had a good night last night. Today started out all right, had a bit of a pain hiccup, but has since calmed down again. Fingers crossed for a quiet day.

I watched Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead last night. Eh. Not terrible. Kinda dumb, but not unenjoyable. I actually started it last night and finished it this morning. Every time I put it on my mother would come into the room and I’d pause it to avoid questions of gore. I was watching on my laptop with AirPods in, but I didn’t want to risk grossing her out. When I was 18 I probably would have just let it go. I guess I’m more mature now.

Speaking of mature, the 50 year old red head mixed a song. How grown up of me!

Have I mentioned my beloved wife bought me a new Les Paul for my birthday? Have I mentioned that all of the guitars on this song are that new Les Paul? Have I mentioned that I love my new birthday Les Paul? Not as much as I love my wife, but that gitter is sah-weeeet.

I’m not sure if I am going to submit this one to the RPM site for the Record Every Month thingie. I have three. This one, the last one I posted, and one more that isn’t mixed yet. I haven’t decided which one sucks the least.

Television Mistake

I’ve been putting it off for a long time, but I just did something insane in terms of television viewing and personal mental health.

The Handmaids Tale on Hulu. I read the book. I saw the original movie. I didn’t watch the new show though. Why? Because knowing the story and living in a country with trump in the white house was just too much to deal with. The dystopian story hit a little too close to home.

Well the fascist is gone so I decided to give it a go. I watched the first episode. It is still too close to home. Holy shit is that an ugly story. It’s terrifying and I am still only one episode in. Crap.

I started rewatching Community too in an attempt to lighten the mood. We started binging that show with the kids ages ago but they sort of left me in the dust. I’m on episode five and I already don’t remember ever seeing this one… so there you go. As a graduate of a community college allow me to state publicly that they got everything exactly correct. Like… exactly correct.
