Happy Birthday to John Mayall

Today is John Mayall’s 90th birthday. As a guitar player, I owe this guy so much. First he hired Eric Clapton, then he hired Peter Green, then he hired Mick Taylor. I mean… he is the king of all band leaders.

90 years young, and many happy returns.

One Hour to Go

It’s 4:30. I have one hour left in the work day. It feels like an eternity.

This has been a long one. I am in the office today and I really wish I had been able to work from home. I really miss Jen today. I always miss Jen when I am not near her, but today has felt so much worse. I just want to go home and have dinner with her and relax a little. She has a computer hardware project she wants to do tonight. I can help out a little. It will be fun.

I am not sure what the problem was today. It has just felt like an endless grind of a day. That happens sometimes. It’s actually been quiet and calm, but it’s not at home and somehow that makes quiet and calm feel stressful. Weird, eh?

53 minutes until quittin’ time. I can make it. Who knows how long the commute will be. It’s pitch dark outside already (stupid non-daylight savings time). It’s 34 degrees out. It will probably be below freezing by the time I leave. I really don’t like this time of year. Blah.

Okay, let’s make that last hour of the work day productive. What do you say. Get some work done and then go home to where you belong.

ADDENDUM: Almost immediately after publishing this post we got pulled into an escalated issue for one of our biggest customers. So much for calm and quiet.

No Sleep for Me

If you didn’t need sleep, what would you do with all the extra time?

Daily writing prompt

What would I do with the extra time if I didn’t have to sleep? I barely sleep as it is, so things wouldn’t be that different. I think I would still want to sleep if I didn’t need sleep which is again very similar to how things already are. I don’t sleep very much, but I wish I did so… same difference?

It’s not very realistic that if sleep weren’t needed the time we currently use sleeping would suddenly become personal time. If it did I would spend it with my wife and I would probably just watch more TV or surf the web more. If I were smart I’d play more guitar or work on creative projects or work around the house or do more different things with Jen rather than flake on the couch. Things like that.

Let’s be honest though, if we didn’t have to sleep our late stage capitalist society that is driven by greed and avarice would dictate to us that all of that free time would be spent at work. Our eight hour day would be a 16 hour day and there would be nothing we could do about it. We’d make the same wage or salary that we make in our 40 hour week, we’d just have to work 80 hours a week to earn it. In other words, if we had all of that extra time available it would be exploited. Every last second of it.
