One Year

We lost my mother one year ago today. After years and years of dementia she was finally free of all of her physical pain and mental confusion. Would she see it as release the way we hope she would? I have no idea.

I got to spend a little time with my father tonight. He was mostly okay, but he’s having an annoying, persistent health issue of his own that flared up quite a bit yesterday and sent him briefly to the ER. He’s fine, he just needs to do what the doctors tell him to do. When he does, he improves. He just doesn’t do it enough. Insert the frustrated sigh here.

Now that I am home I have spent the last 15-20 minutes asking Google Bard to generate images of Jedi Knights in goofy situations like being a contestant on The Bachelor, riding a tiger, or watching a baseball game. I feel like I’ve found my new favorite internet hobby.

No music progress today. It’s getting close to bed time and I haven’t accomplished anything. Well… I picked off a few things at work today, which was nice. Just no musical accomplishments, that’s all. There is also a zombie movie that I want to watch tonight so that I can listen to a podcast discussing it on the drive to work tomorrow.

So many things to do.

Amazing Advances in Topical Creams

Yesterday’s haiku mentioned that I feel like I have a black eye. I don’t have a black eye though. It’s just swollen and sore. What’s going on?

I might have a guess. I made a doctors appointment for afterwork tonight to see if my guess is correct. If it is, then we’re going to have to keep me away from Worcestershire sauce* for a while. Fortunately there have been some amazing advances in topical creams, so I should be okay if the worst is true.

My question for the doctor… do I have… Pink Eye?

*This whole post is a reference to the first South Park Halloween episode. If you don’t get the references then I apologize for your lack of culture. That first Halloween episode is one of the finest 30 minute television time slots in broadcast/cable/streaming history. It is perfection.

The Zombies are Finally Back Again

Sunday February 20, 2022. Season 11, episode 9. The Walking Dead is finally back. It feels like an eternity since the last episode.

World Beyond was good. Fear the Walking Dead is atrocious. There’s nothing like the main show though. 16 episodes left, including tonight. Enjoy the zombified goodness while you can, kids because the end is coming. Figuratively as well as literally, right?

Insert zombie sounds here.

My Brain and My Hands are Now Mush

I have spent maybe three hours working on guitar parts today. I put rhythm guitars on three songs (song numbers 16-18 if you’re keeping track, and I know you are not), started a new song (titled song number 19 for now), and put leads onto three songs (titled song number 2 through 4).

I did all of the rhythm tracks first, then the leads. I was okay when I started working on leads. The first song went well. While working on the second song I was thinking I might be needing a break. The third song was totally overdoing it.

After all of that time my hands and my ears and my brain all feel like a fuzzy mush. I definitely need a break. I think I’ll watch an episode or two of Disenchantment, then make dinner for the love of my life, then we’ll see what happens. I still have to do all of my exercise, and there is an episode of a certain zombie show airing at 9:00pm. I need to be ready for that.

(Insert the sound of a zombie hissing here. Unless you’re not a Walking Dead fan, in which case insert the sound of a more Romero style zombie moaning here instead)

Dawn of the Bite Me

I thought to myself, tomorrow’s Halloween, let’s watch a classic scary movie. I watched Night of the Living Dead recently. What was Romero’s second movie? Dawn of the Dead. Yeah, let’s watch that. Not the Zack Snyder remake, the original.

Turns out none of the streaming services I belong to carry it. Figures.

All is not lost though. I found a shit quality copy on YouTube. That’ll have to do.

Happy Halloween, folks.

FTWD Bad Writing Moment of the Week

Spoilers ahead, two paragraphs down. Nothing specific, but be warned.

Every episode of Fear the Walking Dead seems to have one moment where they tried to write something cool without having any grasp on the way things work in reality.

There was a scene tonight where they were fighting off zeds in heavy fog at night. They had been hiding inside a lighthouse. They turned on the lighthouse light in order to see what they were doing… at the base of the lighthouse… because none of the writers have ever seen how a lighthouse works.

Marvel Zombies

So tonight’s episode of What If is the zombie episode.

No spoilers. I promise.

However, if you are like everyone in my family other than me and you find zombies too disturbing to watch, you might want to give it a miss. At the same time though, there is a lot of humor in the episode, so if you love the funny and think you can handle the scary, give it a try.

Okay. That’s all I am going to say about that.

Oh, and I think I just read that Star Wars Visions (the anime anthology series) premiers on September 22nd. So we have that going for us, assuming I didn’t misspell anime.

Lunch Break

Twice in the past when my foot was hurting like hell I had two different people suggest a stretching exercise that should help.

  1. Roll up a towel
  2. Put your foot on the center
  3. Take the ends in your hands
  4. Keep your leg straight
  5. PULL

It has worked for me in the past. I am not sure if it is working for me today, or if the fist full of Advil I took about five hours ago is working, but one of those two is working and my foot feels a lot better. It still hurts, but it’s manageable.

I’m on my lunch break. I’m listening to podcasts discussing Rick and Morty. I’m eating a bowlful of M&Ms*.

What to do, what to talk about.

I have a candle burning. It is going to burn out soon. Does that mean that I’ll start a new candle tomorrow and do a time lapse from the very beginning? Wait a tick… what if I did a time lapse on a new candle and didn’t shut if off until the candle burned out. It would take days, but the iOS app would reduce the whole thing down to less than a minute. How epic would that be?

There is a new episode of Marvel’s What If…? today. Last week we were able to do a watch party with Harry. I don’t know if we’re going to try that again. Partly because I heard a rumor that tonight’s episode will be Marvel Zombies and Harry doesn’t do zombies. He’s also in his second week of college and by this point he should probably be dealing with 3+ hours of homework each night.

Okay, time to start the dishwasher, check on the dehumidifier in the cellar, and go back to work. Maybe do that stretching episode for a minute or two too, then back to work.

*Does anyone else take bags of M&Ms, pour them into a bowl, and then eat them one color at a time? Am I the only one? Is that a sign of a defective brain? AbyNormal, as the movie implied?

Zombie Double Feature

Why did I watch two zombie movies today? I don’t know. I’m staying at my parent’s house for a couple of days and I’ve had some time to spend with ye olde streaming services.

First choice was Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and I don’t know why. No idea. It was really stupid and I am never getting that hour and a half of my life back again.

Second choice was The Girl With All the Gifts. I read the book a while ago. The movie was very faithful and very good. The kids were creepy AF, but any zombie movie with kid zombies is going to be creepy AF.

Now I have to decide what to watch next. It probably won’t be until tomorrow, but there will be time. Tarantino movies? Marvel movies? Star Wars movies?

On an unrelated note, Taylor Hall had two goals with Buffalo this season. In three games with the Bruins he has… two goals. Now we’re talking, Taylor.

Important Question: Answered

I’m not sure what possessed me to do this, maybe some alien virus or something, but I have learned the answer to one of life’s more important questions.

Are the zombies in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies fast zombies or slow zombies?

Fast. The answer is, fast zombies.

You’re welcome. Now you don’t have to watch the movie yourself.
