Spoke Too Soon

I got up this morning to watch the new episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds while doing my morning exercise and I found that there were two new episodes, not one. They released a Lower Decks cross over a few days ago and somehow I didn’t catch it. How the hell did that happen? That episode was fun. This week’s episode is dark. Woah, babie is it dark.

That’s not what this post is about though. Yesterday I wrote something about having a good day food-wise. I spoke too soon. Not that when things went bad it was that bad. It was not. It wasn’t even technically a problem. I was hungry when I left work. Really hungry. I had a protein bar on the drive, which put me over the 80 grams of protein goal for the day. I figured I’d have a little bit of supper with Jen and then I’d be set for the day. That was the plan.

When I got home though, she had dinner waiting for me. It was quinoa with chicken. She used taco sauce in the vegetable stir fry. It smelled like heaven. Amazing. I put a big spoonful onto a plate… then another big spoonful… then a smaller spoonful. I never thought I’d eat it all, and I didn’t. Not even close. What I did do was eat too much. WAY too much. I stopped when my stomach was feeling uncomfortably full. I should have finished 5-10 minutes earlier, but I didn’t. In the first few minutes after I stopped the uncomfortable full feeling started getting worse. I set a timer for one hour because I still had my evening vitamins to take even though I was already over my water goal for the day. I figured I’d have a few ounces of water with the two calcium pills and then I could move on with my life.

When the hour timer went off I was still painfully full. I set another timer for 30 minutes. I was still not good when that went off. I did it again, and again, and again. I had stopped eating at 7:22pm. At 10:20 I was still feeling too full to take the pills. I was also seriously exhausted so I just went to sleep. I wasn’t happy about missing a vitamin dose, but I could live with it given the circumstances.

At 2:00am I woke up needing to pee (TMI, sorry). My stomach felt normal again at that point, as I suspected it would. I took those two calcium pills with two ounces of water. Sure, they were taken on the wrong calendar date, and it was 9-10 hours later than I like to take them, but I got them in. I also did the dishes, which I was planning to do before I went to sleep but failed to. I felt pretty good.

There were a couple of weird things though. First, when I woke up I was dripping with sweat and my bed sheet was down right soggy. What the hell happened there? I have no idea. I didn’t feel hot at all, quite the opposite. Why was I sweating buckets during that 3.5 hours of sleep? On top of that, when I eventually laid down to sleep I couldn’t. What the hell, Robert? I was still feeling super tired. It just took me about half an hour to get back to sleep. Weird.

Okay, I just finished today’s Star Trek episode. It was really good. I mean, really good. I think next week will be a musical episode with songs written by two former members of Letter to Cleo. Boston music across the stars, babie! I am not sure that’s what’s going on, but that’s the rumor I’ve heard. Check Kay Hanley’s social media for details. I’ve been avoiding it out of fear of spoilers.

For now though, it’s time to get ready for work. Have a good day, everyone and if you’ve had gastric bypass surgery, don’t over do it with the taco flavored quinoa, no matter how spectacular it tastes.

Long Day

Today is my first day back at work after a four day weekend. I’ve been punched in for about eight hours and 11 minutes but if feels like 2523972 hours and 237923603 minutes.

One bad thing happened at work today. I was prompted to reboot to take a Windows update. I had no idea (because I didn’t check before I rebooted) that the update in question was a full update to Windows 11. Ah, hell.

After a few less than perfect days in a row in terms of gastric bypass side effects and the like, I have now had two very good days. Well, yesterday was good and today has been good so far. I am really tired though. I only got four hours of sleep ahead of my sunrise jaunt yesterday. Last night I got six hours but I never put on my CPAP mask so maybe it wasn’t the most productive six hours. I am trying to remember why I didn’t put it on when I went to sleep last night and I can’t recall. I know there was a reason at the time, but what was it?

Did I mention I mailed off two rolls of film yesterday? I was hoping to maybe get an email saying the lab had received them today, but I didn’t really expect to. Maybe tomorrow? One roll was loaded into Dad’s camera on either Christmas day or Christmas eve, so there will be a few Christmas shots. There was also some snow in the back yard stuff, and then the first day of Bellana’s graduation weekend. The other roll was my first roll of Kodak Portra 800. Really my first use of a professional level film. I get shivers just thinking of that, and know that everything I took will likely suck because I am clueless. That roll has mostly graduation weekend stuff, and a few pics from yesterday’s stop at Plum Island.

We are going to see Harry this weekend. I expect a lot of Doctor Who discussions. Maybe I will make him watch an episode of the original show, just for laughs. Maybe I’ll Google something like “best forth doctor episodes” and see if there’s something we can watch out of sequence.

I just did exactly that and found that Douglas Adams of Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy fame wrote three episodes of Doctor who in 1979. Only two aired as the third was derailed by a labor strike. I think we might have to investigate this further.

Okay, the work day is coming to a close. Time to start packing up. I hope you all had a good Wednesday, and I hope it didn’t feel like it was 941760497 hours long.

Cross Post with Bluesky

I just posted this on Bluesky… not that anyone is really using Bluesky at this point. The user base is small to begin with (invites only) and the staff has been seriously screwing up the content moderation end and making some majorly boneheaded, racist, and sexist moves. It’s really taking the fun out of things.

Doctor Who, the original series. Season two, episode nine. This is the last episode in the second ever dalek story arc, and it’s the first time I have heard a dalek say the word, “exterminate.”

Life is pretty much complete now.

Morning Fail

Guess what I didn’t get to this morning before work.

323/365
323/365

I managed to finish my daily exercise, watch this week’s new episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (excellent!), and finish the Library episode of Doctor Who that I started last night but fell asleep during the second episode.

No music though, so the morning goes down in the books as a failure.

Mountains of Who

How about an update on the massive Doctor Who binge watch?

The new series is proceeding nicely. I started season four (of 13, so far) over the weekend. Each season is 13 episodes plus an extra special episode or two (or three), usually a bonus episode around Christmas time. The show changed actors playing The Doctor after the first season. From there it’s three seasons per actor. The next season that airs (I don’t know when that will be) is going to bring back a prior actor for the first time. I don’t know if that is going to be confusing or not. We’ll see. I have a long, long way to go before I have to worry about that.

As for the original series… holy shit is there a lot of stuff there. Not only are there 25 seasons (I think) but the first batch of seasons have over 40 episodes! FORTY! They are only about 25 minutes each, and at some point the seasons drop to 20-something episodes each, and eventually 13-14 (for the couple of later seasons I spot checked) each.

I think I am 22 episodes into season one, so about half way. There isn’t a lot of similarities between the first season of the original show and the current show. There’s a guy named The Doctor who travels through time and space in a police box, but as far as the character himself, they are pretty different. I read somewhere that they will change direction at some point, possibly as early as season two. That will bring things more into line, I think.

There is also the small matter of some episodes are missing. I believe it is down to something silly like the BBC taping over some of the video. Someone somewhere has tried to recreate the missing pieces. Either using audio tracks that still exist, combined with still photos taken from set, or maybe some animation? I have seen one audio-only story arch so far but I think there are animations coming in the near future. I should also mention that the show (in season one, at least) operates like a serial. There are 42 episodes but there are longer stories made up of multiple episodes. It’s actually kinda cool.

The main point of what I am getting at with this discussion is that it is going to take a long time to plow through the original show. I mean a long time. We could be talking years here. It’s beyond crazy how much there is to watch. I did find a podcast that appears to cover every episode of both series so I have someone to follow along with. Still… it’s going to take a very long time.

A very long time, indeed.

2023 50/90 Challenge Day 11/90

Not a lot today. I wrote lyrics and melody for one song, also arranging a song form for that same song. I added song idea #18 as well. The hope is that I will play shit loads of guitar tomorrow and then do car music and more guitar on Sunday. I expect to have at least a couple of songs ready to mix by Monday.

That’s the goal at least. I also need to get an oil change and an inspection sticker on one of the cars. That has to happen tomorrow, so we’ll see if that throws off my place in the universe at all.

Wish me luck. I am so happy the weekend is here. Now it’s almost bed time so I am going to watch some Doctor Who. The next episode is called Blink and I hear it’s one of the best from the current series. Let’s find out, shall we?

Ahsoka Trailer

A new trailer for the Disney+ series Ahsoka came out today. I am hyped like you wouldn’t believe.

This show comes out on my brother’s birthday. It’s his birthday but I feel like I am getting a present. I am so ready for this show!

Doctor Who

Yup, I’m bringing my nerd level up to previously unimaginable heights.

Last year Bellana came home for a visit and spent a good chunk of TV time showing Harry episodes of Doctor Who. The next time Harry came home he was binging his way through the modern series.

The history here is the show aired from 1963 to 1989, I think, then came back in 2005? I think? Something like that. The kids were watching the second run. The first run isn’t on any streaming service we have access to. I joked that I was going to find the original show and watch it myself. I didn’t.

Last week, or thereabouts, I let their enthusiasm inspire me and I started binge watching the modern show too. I think the streaming service formerly known as HBO Max has 13 seasons. I’m on the last episode of season two.

Earlier this evening I also decided to look into keeping my threat to find episodes of the original show. I found some bad low-res scans of the first season. I watched the first two episodes. Did you know The Doctor had a granddaughter? Will that be explained away or will it be retconned at some point?

I’ll let you know. Someday.

Reality vs 90210

My beloved wife is binge watching the shit out of Beverly Hills 90210. Since I am such a good husband, I am watching it with her. In season four there is a story line that does not line up to my personal experiences. Allow me to explain.

For three years I was a college radio DJ. 2002-2004 or so. Something like that. Maybe 2001-2004? Whatever. I had a show on UMass Lowell’s radio station. Once a week on Tuesday afternoons. It was a great time.

On the show, one of the 90210 gang also has a college radio show of his own. Outside of that, things aren’t really similar. For me, there was never a time when I opened a random desk and found a packet of crystal meth just sitting there. That literally never happened. I never even found a packet of sugar in a desk. Maybe it was just a California vs Massachusetts thing, but David 90210 and I had vastly different college radio experiences.

Sad

We saw both kids this weekend. That was awesome. I love it when they come home. We were supposed to go to a party at their aunt’s house today. A dual graduation party for my step daughter and her cousin who both graduated from college this year. Jen and I had to miss it because we both have a bit of a stomach bug right now and… well… at the risk of TMI, neither of us wanted to be away from a bathroom for the length of time that would be required to drive to the party location. Sorry. I am actually sad about it. It’s been decades since last we went to an event that was thrown by someone on the kids’ dad’s side of the blended family and it might have been a little weird after all of these ages, but I was still looking forward to going.

That’s not what I am feeling especially sad about. What I am sad about is that Bellana is staying at her dad’s tonight and Harry just left for Vermont. Our kid time is over for this weekend. Harry will be back in a couple of weeks, but for now… we’re kid free.

That’s why I am sad.

On a slightly related note, television-wise, I finished watching the two seasons of Spaced and now I need something new to add to my huge list of binge shows. Spaced has me in the mood for British television. Both kids have watched the new version of Doctor Who, all 300 seasons or whatever it is. We’ve watched a handful of episodes together over the last year or so and… well… I just started from reboot season one, episode one. I’ll finish this show in about 20 years. Then I’ll have to find the 300 seasons of the original version of the show. Yeah, this should keep me busy for a while.
