Long Day

Didn’t I write something not long about about not writing about work anymore?

Work has been crazy for the last few days and today is no different. Lighten up, universe. So much stuff going on. All reasonable and handleable (is that a word?) but damn, gimme a break!

It’s Loki night. Harry is coming over and we’re going to have hamburgers for dinner and watch the new episode. I haven’t a clue what’s going on in the story but I’m totally into it and can’t wait for work to end so that we can all watch it together. It’s only going to be six episodes and tonight is episode three. Marvel didn’t prepare us for this. We wanted TV series and we’re really just getting movies spread out over a month or so. Okay… I’ll take it.

I really need to get my eyes checked. I don’t know if there will be time this weekend, but I have to do it soon. Jen got a pair of glasses just for use with a computer. I think that’s a good idea. I wanted to get a pair of reading glasses to go along with my progressives. Computer glasses is pretty much the same idea. I want to be able to use the whole lens when I know I’ll be doing up close viewing. I want sunglasses too, but that’s asking too much.

I really want to have a band practice.

Okay. Lunch break is over. Back to work, red head.

Say Uncle

Holy crap.

Yesterday was the work equivalent of getting run over by a bus. Today has been the work equivalent of getting run over by 10 buses. Tomorrow is probably going to be 100 buses.

It’s not bad things at all, it’s just a lot of things all piling on at once. Holy Toledo, eh?

It’s almost time to punch out. Then I have to wait an hour or so for my sister to get here. Then I fill her in on how the day went, give her the pill caddy, and head home. Jen had a pile driver of a day too so we’re probably going to do some professional venting when I get there. It’s all good. I have missed her like crazy today.

Two minutes to quittin’ time. In the immortal words of David Lee Roth, I think the clock is slow.

I am Bad at Predictions

More proof that I ain’t no prophet, right?

In the last post I wished everyone an easy Friday at work. Within 10 minutes of punching in this morning I got hit by a metaphorical bus known as one of our biggest customers. Everything is under control now, but yikes, eh?

Why does Apple’s podcast app suck so bad? Specifically on iPadOS. It keeps crashing and losing it’s place and what the hell, bro? I already listened to that Loki Episode 2 podcast, I don’t want to listen to it again, and I was halfway through this other Loki Episode 2 podcast so why are you starting from the beginning again? Also, where the hell are the new episodes of podcasts I subscribe to? They aren’t all a day late, are they? Come on, Apple. You want to lose to some crap fest like Stitcher? Or, heaven forbid, Spotify? Crud, babie. Crud. Get your podcast catching ass in gear, okay?

So, Loki… are they going to pull a fast one on us and have the TVA end up as the bad guys? If you think that’s a spoiler, read the title of this post again. No spoilers here, unless we’re talking about Fear the Walking Dead. I’ll spoil the shit out of that dumpster fire (no I won’t). Those of us who are still watching deserve it. Masochism, babie. Masochism.

I need to play guitar this weekend. I need to cut the grass, but I need to play guitar. Do you get where I’m coming from? While I need to watch the new Rick and Morty episode this weekend, I need to play guitar. Yeah, you’re picking up what I’m putting down.

Okay then. Back to work, fat boy. Back to work.

Friday Morning

Friday morning… at last.

I don’t think we have any plans this weekend. We’ll get to spend some time with Harry, but it’s Father’s day weekend and he should spend Sunday with his dad.

Other than that? No clue. I need a haircut and I need to have my eyes checked but neither will happen this weekend. Maybe next weekend, but not this weekend. The grass could use a mowing and we have a lot of leaves in the back yard still. I could work on that some. The forecast looks agreeable.

I just need to get through one more work day. Just one more. Here’s hoping all of our customers have full blown summer fever and they all go for long weekends and leave us alone for today. Wouldn’t that be nice (there’s zero chance)?

Okay. Time to punch in. Happy Friday, everyone. May your work day be quiet and easy and may your weekend arrive quickly.

Toodles.

Lunch Break

Lunch break on a Wednesday. We’ve been talking about the desks in our new building today. March 13, 2020 was the last day at our desks in the Waltham building. Two months ago the Waltham building was sold. Now we have desks in another building but prior to this morning none of us had gone to check it out. One guy went today and reported back that none of our stuff from Waltham has made it to the new desks yet. Uh oh. The upside is that some of us might be getting new monitors out of the deal. I had two when we left. They were both old and less than good. This could work out for me.

Wait… didn’t I write something about not talking about work?

The AC folks have come and gone. The window for their arrival was between 7:00 and 11:00. They knocked on the door at 10:50. His first question was, would you like me to wear a mask? Yes, yes I would. Thanks. It was just a routine cleaning and the AC in the wall in the bedroom clearly benefitted from it because it’s working like crazy now. It’s actually cold in here. I haven’t spent much time in the rest of the house yet so I don’t have any news from that front yet.

The tech said the wall unit in the bedroom was pretty old. Huh? It was installed three years ago. How is that old? Was it sitting on some warehouse shelf for a decade before it was installed in our house? Worse… was it used?

My father is in the hospital again. Day two. My brother is with him. The idea is to move him back into a rehab so that he can get back to a point where he can take care of himself better than he can now… which he can’t. He asked to have some of his more common aches and pains looked at while he was in there. Good idea. No real news on any front yet. Hopefully he’ll be in a new rehab quickly and he can get back to working on getting better. I am scared and worried and stressed and wracked with guilt and I am just overwhelmed with it all… and I’m not the one in the hospital bed. I can’t even begin to imagine how he feels. I hate this. I want my dad to be better again.

So Covid is over, right? The world is opened up again, right? People are still getting sick and people are still dying, but it’s all over, right? I’m thinking about things that I can do that were put on hold. Vacations would be first on that list but we have two college kids now and we are out of money. I already had a haircut, but I need another one because my hair grows faster than light. I need to get my eyes checked. Jen has done that already but see the previous sentence regarding money. I may have to ride out my old glasses for a little while longer. There is a guitar and an amplifier that I’d like to trade in. It depends on how much I can get for each item, but if I can get a used ’68 Deluxe Reverb or a used Les Paul Junior in exchange, I might. I don’t know how that will go.

Okay, time to clean up my lunch and get back to work. The hope is we will be watching episode two of Loki by 6:00pm. Four hours or so from now. Fingers crossed.

Wish my dad good luck, okay? Thanks.

Project Work

I don’t work in a software development group. I work in a customer service group. Every now and then though the programmers in my group are asked to pitch in and help Development hit a deadline, or take on a project when Dev doesn’t have enough staff to go around at that moment.

We recently took on two projects that were pieces of a much larger collection of projects. We were hoping to get the first project done by April or May, and then immediately start on the second project. Instead we brought in another programmer and worked on both of them concurrently with a goal for completion by mid-June.

Today is June 15th. Literally the middle of June.

As of about an hour ago, both of our projects are complete.

In the immortal words of a beer commercial from back in the 80’s…

It’s Miller time.

Awesome job, guys.

Bullet Dodged

We made a mistake at work last week and today we had a call with the affected customer. I had no idea how they were going to react, but I was prepared for a grade A verbal beat down. If I owned a helmet, I would have worn a helmet.

Nope. They were understanding and accepted our apology and dove right into reviewing the data as if everything went off according to plan.

May you all receive such generous kindness when you screw up. More importantly, would the grudge holding, temper tantrum throwing red head writing this post be more inclined to do the same for others.

Bullet dodged, dudes. Bullet dodged.

It Survived

When I work at my parents house I am sitting at the dining room table using a massive desk setup that belongs to my brother. Three monitors and the switcher that lets you use them with a single USB C plug, wireless keyboard and mouse, and a USB hub. Lots and lots of stuff. I’m using it every time I work here, but I have not contributed anything to the work space.

Until today.

It survived the trip. I think I am going to leave it here because it’s pretty delicate and I don’t know how many trips back and forth in a backpack it has in it. Still, this little five speed USB sucker is my new favorite desk swag.

Almost Midnight

It’s almost midnight. I’m still awake. I’m about to curl up on the love seat in my parents living room and try to get some sleep.

The Bruins won tonight. The Red Sox won too. Nice. I didn’t watch either of them. I watched a couple of episodes of Supergirl. I’m not feeling that show anymore. Didn’t last season either. Probably a good thing it’s ending.

I should probably wrap it up and go to sleep. My iPad’s battery is down to 28%. There’s a part of me that wants to stay up until it gets to zero, but I’ve got a busy day tomorrow and should really get some rest.

Okay, going to bed. G’night, all.

Good Morning

Good morning, everyone. How’s your Tuesday going. Hope you’re off to a good start.

I’m at my parents house. My brother is here and he’s working at his desk. He expects to be wrapping up soon so I can hijack his monitors again. I feel like a squatter but it’s okay.

Jen just called me. She’s off work this morning and went out for some errands. One of them was getting the Kia inspected. She had to go into the shop. Pre-Covid that would have been nothing. Now? That’s a huge accomplishment. I’m very proud of her. My wife has some serious guts.

She also set something up for tomorrow that I don’t want to talk about yet that literally took the weight of the world off my shoulders. The relief is so great it’s like a physical thing. Thank you, my love.

Okay, off to work. Happy Tuesday, everyone!
