Fun Times

Daily writing prompt
What was the last thing you did for play or fun?

There are varying levels of fun, right? Last night I watched some Star Trek. I did that for fun. I hung out in the living room with my beloved bride watching that show about Julia Child (which is surprisingly wonderful so far) and that was fun. Any time spent with her is fun.

The last major-ish event was going to Vermont to see a hockey game with my step son, Harry. Before that was Thanksgiving and putting up a xmas tree with Jen and the kids. Before that was the Letters to Cleo/Gigolo Aunts show at The Paradise with Mike.

I can’t overlook last weekend when Jen and I went shopping for little pieces of furniture for our home office spaces, and then rearranged everything in her office. That doesn’t sound like your typical fun activity, but it really was. Like I said, anything Jen and I do together will qualify as fun.

Of course the next big thing for us is xmas. I am ready for the holiday to get here so that it can be over, but that doesn’t change how much fun it will be. Xmas day with my wife and step kids followed by dinner at my sister’s, then the next day will be xmas-continued with my in-laws. All three events will be excellent fun. HoHoHo and stuff.

Lost

The Bruins lost 4-3 in overtime.

I guess I wasn’t the jinx today. They blew this game without any help from me.

Unrelated, I’m watching my second episode of Deep Space Nine tonight. Season five episodes four and five. In both episodes a post-religious human being mentions god. Bashir sees Jake alive and says thank god. O’Brien realizes he can’t stop whatever is possessing his wife and says god help me.

These star fleet human cats are supposed to be atheists living in an atheist society that’s a few hundred years removed from religion. As a fellow atheist, though not a Federation citizen or a Star Fleet officer, I’m a little bummed out by the references. Like… hast society come up with new sayings yet? Come on, writers. Let’s get creative, shall we?

Back to the original subject, the next Bruins game is Friday. Hopefully no one will jinx them. Fingers crossed.

Bad Luck Charm

The Bruins lead the Wild 2-1 half way through the third period.

I want to listen to the end of the game on the radio but I’m afraid the Wild will score twice within seconds of me tuning in.

It’s happened before. I’ve been the Bruins’ bad luck charm. If I don’t listen and they hold on to win then they should thank me for staying way.

Or something like that.

Stab

Jen ordered Indian takeout for dinner. We brought it into the living room and put our plates down on a couple of tray tables. I reached out to pull the little table close to me and accidentally knocked the steak knife onto the floor where it……..

Yikes!

(Not Even Close to) Daily Haiku for You #108

For 19 years I have worked at a company who gives a xmas gift to all staff members during the week before xmas. The gift is essentially xmas dinner. They offer a choice of turkey, ham, lasagna, or dessert pies. There are kosher and veggie versions available too. It’s a nice touch. Today is this year’s gift distribution day. It is also the basis for today’s haiku for you.

Holiday Gift Day.
No turkey for me this year.
I went with the ham.

Grocery Store

Daily writing prompt
List your top 5 grocery store items.

A grocery store top five… well, pre-gastric bypass it would have been the three food groups: Chocolate, chips, and ice cream. Today? Post-gastric bypass? It’s a little different.

  • Boneless chicken breasts
  • Purdue chicken patties
  • Sugar free pudding
  • Ortega frozen french fries
  • Protein bars

As the Disney movie song says, it’s a whole new world.

One Wacky Day

As weird, crazy, wacky days go… that was one.

My stomach was in and out of gastric bypass weirdness all day, including a legitimate yacking during dinner. Fun.

As mentioned in a prior post, I was also exhausted all day. I had six uninterrupted hours of sleep last night, but the way I felt through the day you’d think I was awake the whole night. Of course it’s 10:00pm now and I’m not tired at all. I’m just sitting up in bed watching Deep Space Nine ( my binge watch reached season five today) and wondering if I’ll be tired enough to sleep sometime soon.

Tomorrow is this week’s in-the-office day. The company is giving out the annual holiday gift. This year I passed on the turkey and went with the ham. When will we eat it? No clue. I offered it up to my sister and her husband for Xmas dinner but I think they are passing on it.

I have a doctor’s appointment on Thursday morning. It’s my 1.5 year check in with my gastric bypass surgeon. I’m compiling a list of questions. Today’s wacky-weirdness will lead to a few, I’m sure.

Until then… get some sleep, Trekkie-nerd-boy.

Dad

Daily writing prompt
Describe a man who has positively impacted your life.

I could mention family members, teachers, friends, co-workers, anyone. There have been many people who have positively impacted my life. No, there is only one answer. My father.

He taught me everything I know. How to work hard, how to put family first, how to sacrifice for the benefit of your kids. Hell, he basically taught me how to walk and talk and eat with utensils, and literally everything. There cannot be a more positive influence. As good as he’s been to me, I feel like I have been a terrible son to him. I feel like a failure in that regard. I need to do better.

He was married to my mother for over 55 years before she passed away. This has been such a hard year for him and I haven’t done nearly enough to help him through it. I am literally the worst son to the best father.
