Errands

I snuck out for some errands this morning before the work crew got here. I drove around town to a Home Depot and a Lowe’s, prepping for phase two which starts tomorrow.

How about some pics from the road?

The clock, of course
I saw two of these Merrimack Valley transit buses
Nevins Library

So what was input getting? Wall tiles, adhesive, grout, and paint. There is still so much to do, even though they are miles ahead of where I thought they would be.

Tiles and touch ups tomorrow.

Growth

Daily writing prompt
What experiences in life helped you grow the most?

Would it be easier to ask what experiences did not help me grow? Every experience leads to growth. That’s kind of the point, isn’t it? We’re human. That’s what we do. Theoretically of course. Maybe not if you’re a maga cult member. Who knows.

Here are some things. I am not going into details about how each thing changed me. Mostly because it’s kind of obvious when you think about it. We’re probably all just about the same in these respects. I will also try to keep the sarcasm at a minimum, but I can promise you that I will fail in that regard. Spoiler alert.

  • Failing at my first attempt at college, and similarly succeeding in my second
  • Starting a career and not failing miserably at it
  • Starting a relationship with Jen
  • Literally everything that has happened with respect to being both a husband and a step father. There are a lot of failures in there, but a few glowing successes too
  • Becoming a home owner… who knew?
  • Having weight loss surgery. I don’t know who I am anymore, or what I am, or how to be who or what I am. My entire identity has been shuffled. Jen got annoyed with me the other day when I referred to myself as “fat boy”. Thankfully I still have red hair, but for how long?
  • Losing my mother
  • After 86 years of colossal failures, the 2004 Boston Red Sox finally won the World Series. That lead to so much personal growth. The Bruins winning the Stanley Cup in 2011 did too, but they had actually previously won it in my lifetime so it felt a little different. Granted that previous win came when I was about one year old, but it still counts.
  • Seeing Star Wars for the first time. Seeing the original trilogy end. Then decades later getting a second trilogy that I never thought would happen. Then another decade after that getting the third trilogy and seeing that through. Then getting a bunch of television series and more movies. All of this Star Wars has lead to oh so very much personal growth
  • After almost 14 years of talking about it, getting the kitchen remodeled. I feel like a new man when I stand in the new kitchen, and it isn’t even done yet

How’s that list. We just have to accept the fact that the Red Sox are going to finish in last place again, and our championship run is long over and won’t be coming back for quite a while. Let’s just hope the current drought doesn’t last 86 years like that last one did. The new season is just a few short weeks away though. Eternal optimism, even in the face of certain baseball doom.

What was I talking about?

Emulation

While our kitchen is under construction and our entire house is being used by the work crew, there aren’t many places to go now that the work day is over. What am I doing to pass the time?

Sitting at my work desk, playing Pitfall on a video game emulator I found on the web.

I really suck at Pitfall, but I suck worse at both Space Invaders and Defender. My tween self is just in shock at how badly I suck at these games that, while I always sucked at them, I used to be almost competent at.

Kitchen: Lunch Break

I snuck out to the kitchen while the crew was on their lunch break. The progress is surprising to say the least.

The plumber is here, though we weren’t expecting him until next week. Something was leaking so he had to come early. There is also an issue with a pipe sticking out of a wall that needs to be moved into the wall so whatever needs to go in front of it will fit. There is a hole in the ceiling that we’re not sure what will happen to. We had a visit from the tile guy. He’s coming back on Sunday to do the back splash and (I think) touch up some paint.

I am really surprised at how fast this is progressing. It’s amazing.

Photo a Day

The progress being made in the kitchen is stunning. The demo is done and they are installing cabinets. It feels like they might be as much as half a day ahead of schedule. We’re already starting to talk about things that weren’t supposed to happen this weekend. Tiling and painting, specifically. The tile guy is coming on Sunday. It’s absolutely nuts!

Anyway, here’s today’s photo a day pic. I took it before the kitchen guys got here this morning because I didn’t know if I would get a chance for anything once the crazy arrived.

Demolition: Underway

The contractors are here. The demolition of our kitchen is underway. They got here a few minutes before 8:00am, spent a few minutes going over the details, and here we are at 9:19am and most of the kitchen is already gone.

On top of that, half of the cabinet boxes are already put together. They are blowing through this at world record speed. It’s amazing. Maybe they will be finished by tomorrow night like they predicted.

Maybe they know what they are doing and I should stop worrying about it and just let them do their very impressive thing.

Nope

Daily writing prompt
Do you believe in fate/destiny?

This is a one word answer kinda deal. Fate? Destiny? Nope. Not this red head.

Allow me to quote a famous philosopher:

I’ve flown from one side of this galaxy to the other; I’ve seen a lot of strange stuff. But I’ve never seen anything to make me believe that there’s one all-powerful Force controlling everything. There’s no mystical energy field that controls my destiny. Anyway, it’s all a lot of simple tricks and nonsense.

Han Solo

I don’t believe in fate. I don’t believe in destiny. I don’t believe in astrology. I don’t believe in fairy tails. I do believe that The Simpsons is able to predict the future, but I don’t believe we’ve discovered the workings of that particular magic as of yet. I do believe that the universe doesn’t give the faintest shit about the little specs of dust called humans. I think it just keeps on truckin’, minding it’s own business and I think we’re all the better for it.

In other words, let’s let Neil Peart chime in.

All Done and Submitted

Well, the RPM Challenge is complete. I just submitted my “album” which is really just a collection of rough mixes of shitty demoes of shitty songs. It’s just not very good this year.

I don’t have a playlist to embed yet. I’ll put that together tomorrow sometime. I do have the “album” all uploaded and sequenced with cover art and all over at alonetone.

The Potato Situation

I feel good about being done even if I don’t feel terribly good about the results. I’ll figure out a sequence of the leftovers “album” tomorrow too. For now though… I’m spent.

Kitchen Demolition Starts Tomorrow

Our kitchen cabinets are going to get nuked into oblivion starting tomorrow morning. The plan is for the new installation to start on Saturday. They told us it would only take a day. I will believe it when I see it, but I am also really hoping that prediction is accurate.

I still have a few things to move out of the kitchen before they come tomorrow but I figured I’d take some pictures for posterity’s sake.

The appliances (except for the microwave) are staying, though one is moving to a new location, but the cabinets and the counter tops and the shelves are all coming down and being replaced. While I am at this, let me also post pictures of the piles of boxes that IKEA delivered to us over the last few days. Again, just for posterity’s sake, but also sort of just for shits and giggles.

I’ll post a follow up to this after they leave tomorrow so we can see the changes.

I am both ready for this project to get started and ready for it to be over. Please let it end quickly. I want my kitchen back.
