Lazy Sunday

It’s Sunday and Jen and I are just hanging out in the office. We’re in the midst of a grande experiment to improve one facet of our existence. It’s something incredibly important that everyone deals with every day……..

Pillows.

We’re trying to up our pillow game, big time. Jen ordered some pillows the other day and we used them last night. They were very firm. Much firmer than we’ve ever used before. Jen didn’t like them. I haven’t really decided yet. Too firm? Maybe. Too firm to use? I don’t know. We are trying another set of pillows next that are a little squishier. I expect they will be Goldilox: just right.

What else is going on? I am going to have a painful week at work this week, so I’m enjoying the calm today. I’ll pay for it later. I have another day off this week too. Wednesday. That’s three consecutive Wednesdays I’ve been out of work. The other two had actual reasons. This week is just because I had to burn eight hours of vacation time in order to avoid maxing out at the end of the month. I will likely have to do a couple of days in February too, but at least I can use the RPM Challenge as my excuse.

I am a little sad today. A few weeks ago I ordered a pile of new clothes. Two t-shirts didn’t come quickly, but they finally came at the end of last week. The two shirts came from the Rush Backstage store. Yup. I’m wearing my fav band on a t-shirt. Unfortunately, the first of the two that I’ve tried on is really small. It has made me sad. I guess I am going to have to go through a weight loss surgery process in order to get smaller so the shirt will fit. I’m guessing the second band shirt is going to be small too, but I haven’t tried it on yet.

I can’t think of anything else to write about. Jen picked up a copy of NHL ’22 and I started playing it yesterday. Maybe I’ll sneak in another game tonight. I’m playing through the Spengler Cup. I have no idea how that tournament works, but I haven’t lost a game yet. I have it on the lowest difficulty level though, so if I lose a game it means I royally suck.

Okay. Ms Patches just came into the room and she’s meowing for attention. I think I’ll post this and go pet her. Bye for now.

The Mandalorian: How Good is it Really?

No spoilers.

I just watched the new episode of The Mandalorian and it’s lead me to ask a rhetorical question of the universe.

Is this show really as good as I think it is, or am I just such a complete Star Wars fanatic that it appears fantastic to me when it’s actually less than stellar?

I think we’ve had six episodes in season two. With the exception of episode two, I have finished each viewing thinking to myself something along the lines of, well they’ll never top this one. The second episode was excellent but probably not better than the first. Three through six just kept one upping the awesome. Some of it is formula; Mando goes to someone for help and they say sure, but you have to do this quest for me first. The season has felt like an old TV western about the traveling gun fighter. The Lone Ranger with a cooler mask. There have been call backs and cameos the likes of which we never expected. The action sequences and special effects are movie quality and the story we’re following is gripping. Even given how good the first season was, I can’t believe how good season two has been.

But has it been that good, really? Speaking as a lifelong Star Wars fanboy, is my reaction to the quality of the show accurate or is it so colored by 40+ years of fandom that I can’t see the Endor forest for the trees?

My one complaint is still that the episodes tend to run really short. This week’s was less than 30 minutes. That doesn’t take away from anything, but it does leave me wanting more.

Just watch it. I may not be 100% objective, but I think it’s pretty close to perfect.

Fanboy Stress

A couple of hours ago there was an issue with one of the computers in our house. It was an old iMac that one of the kids uses and it needed assistance. My wife and I snuck over to the Apple store to get a piece of hardware to help. While we were there we got to touch an Apple Watch.

Yeah… oh babie. We got to fiddle with the watch. Just a little bit. We couldn’t try it on because we didn’t have an appointment, but we got to futz around with the screen a little.

You know, it’s bad enough that my step son and his father have already ordered watches for themselves. I already knew that once the man started coming home with an Apple Watch on his wrist that I would be overwhelmed with temptation. Unfortunately for me I didn’t even last that long. I’m already in fully tempted mode!

This is awful! How is a ridiculous fanboy like me going to say no now?

I don’t want one.
But I want one.
But I don’t want one.
But I want one.
But I don’t want one!
But I want one!

Oh the horror. The horror.

Baseball: Temporary Allegiance

So I guess we can all agree that the Red Sox aren’t going to make the post season. It’s time to start thinking about which teams I want to root for during the playoffs. My allegiance will of course be temporary. It will only last until the World Series ends. Then it’s 100% Red Sox again.

I usually go for the A’s when they’re still in it. Right now they are in a three way tie for the two wild card spots in the AL, along with Kansas City and Detroit. I’m hoping Detroit is the odd man out of that race. I like Oakland and Kansas City. The Tigers? Not so much. There’s also the Angels, but I don’t think so. Too obvious, with Mike Trout and all. Baltimore? An AL East team? Oh hells no. I think in the American League I’ll go with the Oakland A’s for as long as they’re in it. Then when Jon Lester resigns with Boston over the summer it will be even nicer. (not going to happen though)

In the National League? San Diego! My second favorite city! But wait… they suck again? Oh yeah. So not them. Washington, maybe. Then when the Red Sox lure away their whole roster next year I’ll be more familiar with everyone. St. Louis is an option, but only in the World Series and only because their total World Series Championship count is second only to the Yankees. Any team that can knock the Yankees off of that perch is worth support (although they have a long, long, looooooong way to go) The Dodgers? Hell no. The Giants? Nope. Both teams are still too New York for me. Pittsburgh? Maybe. Atlanta or Milwaukee? Maybe and Maybe.

I guess when the Red Sox season ends I’ll throw most of my fanboydom over to Oakland, and maybe a little to St Louis. At least that’s how it would be if it all ended today. First things first, the A’s need to clinch one of those wild card spots and get themselves into the dance.
