Dandelions

Last night when I got home from work I noticed that the back yard was littered with dandelions.  This morning when I woke up they were all gone.  I figured the deer must have come by and eaten them all.  Tonight I notice that the yard is again lousy with dandelions.

So it just goes to show you that by not mowing the grass I am not artificially removing a source of food for the local wildlife.  By ignoring the lawn I am saving the environment.

I’m all green, babie.

R40 – Opening Night

 photo 81laHOf249L._SL1500__zpstxywoeil.jpg

Tonight is the night. Tulsa, OK is the place. The opening night of the Rush R40 40th anniversary celebration tour! Even though this year is actually their 41st year. Who cares!

What do you think the chances are that I can pick up Jen, get to the airport, fly to Tulsa, get to the arena, scalp two tickets, and get to our seats by 7:00 local time? The chances are pretty slim, but we should do it anyway! WOOHOO!!

Just kidding.

We will be at the Boston and NYC shows. The final show of the tour is in Los Angeles. I’m trying to drop subtle hints to my beloved wife Jen that a trip to L.A. is a good idea. There’s also Toronto though. I’ve always wanted to see Rush play a hometown show.

I am a little disappointed in the band, to tell you the truth. In the past there have been a strange number of tours in which they were in New England within a day or two of my birthday. In 2013 they were at Mohegan Sun on May 9th, In 1990 they hit the mother lode of birthday shows. They were in Providence on the 7th, Hartford on the 8th, and Worcester on the 10th and 11th. I went on the 10th (I think). Add to that the fact that the Clockwork Angels tour in 2012 actually opened in Manchester, NH. Why then could they not have opened this tour in Boston on my birthday? Why? Especially since this is rumored to be either the final tour or the final tour of this magnitude. That would have been a pretty sweet Rush birthday present, don’t you think?

Forty-Four (44)

I guess it was bound to happen.  I fought it for as long as I could.  For 364 days in fact.  I was hoping it would never get here, but it has.

22 x 2
11 x 4
2 x 2 x 11

Willie McCovey
Dennis Seidenberg (or Dave Ellett… yeesh!)
Not Reggie Jackson though, screw that Yankee
Hammerin’ Hank Aaron, the greatest home run hitter ever.

What do they all have in common?

Number 44.

44 years ago today I gave my mother a really freakin’ rough time by insisting on being born.  After the pain I put her through on May 8, 1971 is it any wonder she never let me have a dirt bike?

Joining the Complainers

A few years ago Flickr completely re-wrote their user interface. Many long time users were furious. I loved it. I thought they improved the site in every way but one. The images used up all of the available screen real estate. Suddenly the main focus of the site was actually viewing images. The only thing wrong was that it was really, really slow. The speed improved dramatically over time. They updated the site a second time without making huge changes. They shuffled some of the screen elements around but kept the focus on the images. Again, I thought the changes were good while seemingly endless Flickr users were ready to burn down the entire United States in protest. I didn’t get it. I still don’t.

There is another new redesign now, and this time I’m less than thrilled. Basically they incorporated Apple’s attempt at redesigning their camera roll. It doesn’t look good for Apple. It also doesn’t look good for Flickr. Fortunately it is not the default view and it seems more of an attempt at organization than display. It’s okay in that sense, but I don’t think it’s necessarily better than the existing Organizr function. The photostream view is still there, and that’s what you see when you click on a user. That’s good.

If the camera roll view becomes the new “thing” I’m going to be pissed. It’s worse than the original Flickr from years ago. Everything is thumbnail sized. Fingers crossed that Flickr sees this as working in conjunction with photostream (which makes sense given the functionality we have now), not as the next generation.

The downside is that it’s the default view for your own user on the iOS app. Urgh.

The upside of the new roll out is what appears to be a standalone upload app and (praise be to the gods of the internets) A STAND ALONE DOWNLOAD APP! FINALLY FINALLY I can back things up using standard functionality instead of some dude’s Linux script! Oh happy day!

Having said that, let’s see how the download app works. It’s supposed to write your files into a zip. Hmmm… we’ll see.

I also did what I always do when Flickr rolls out changes. I went to the suggested user function and followed everyone there. I then reloaded and did it again. Three times. Anything to get people checking into Flickr. I still very much want it to be the biggest thing on the web instead of the after thought it’s become. And I’m not just saying that because I have more than 30,000 pictures on the site. I generally love it. Indeed I do.

Why I Hate Tulsa, Oklahoma

I hate Tulsa, OK. I hate it I hate it I hate it.

Why do I hate it?

Because the Rush R40 tour kicks off in Tulsa tomorrow night and I am not there. That’s why I hate Tulsa, OK. I hate it I hate it I hate it. Stupid Tulsa gets the Rush opening night show and I don’t. Bunch of stupid jerk faces.

Still Bad

I was bad again last night.  Not as bad as I was on Tuesday, but not good.  We got take out.  I had been very good all day so I got what was probably the least awful thing on the menu.  Or at least the least awful thing Mr Robert the Picky Eater can stomach.  Unfortunately my step son got exactly the same thing and barely ate any of his… so I polished it off for him.

Woops.

It’s going to be easy to cheat this weekend too.  There’s Mothers Day, and someone I know is having a birfday.  If the weather cooperates though I hope to get out and do some yard work.  That will count for exercise.  It seems to be the only exercise I get.  Well, that and two hours standing up during band practice.  That counts, right?

On the upside, the Montreal Canadians and the New York Rangers are both one loss away from their off seasons.  I am quite the Tampa Bay Lightning and Washington Capitals fan right now.

Hockey Hate

The two NHL teams I hate the most, the New York Rangers and the effin’ jerkwads the Montreal Canadians are both losing in their second round playoff series. Wouldn’t it be something if they both got bounced in the same round.

It wouldn’t make up for the lack of post-season Bruins, but it would be pretty sweet.

Oh, and the Red Sox just took the lead in the bottom of the third.

I’ll enjoy all of this while I can.

Bad Robbie. Bad, Bad Robbie

I’m really bad at weight watchers.  This is all sort of sudden.  I didn’t used to be bad at weight watchers.

This weekend was the end of the kids’ school vacation so we honored the occasion by going out to eat twice and even going out for ice cream.  I was not good, diet wise, but not too too bad.  The ice cream was bad but I didn’t go overboard and I had been backing off on snacks to make room.  The dinners out could have been bad but I stuck as close as I could to simply filling foods.  I did cave in to eating bread both times.  That wasn’t good.

Last night though… last night I redefined “bad”.  Last night my behavior would have been bad even if I wasn’t on weight watchers.  I had a huge dinner.  I mean, off the chain giganticly huge.  That was bad.  I then tore through a big pile of junk food with an embarrassing abandon.  I spoiled a lot of good habits that were starting to develop.  I feel bad.

I feel bad, but…

I am putting it behind me.  I am not going to let one bad night turn into a bad week.  Yeah, I might be considering not weighing in on Saturday, but I would still like to go to the meeting.  I need to re-apply the gung-ho feeling I had a few weeks ago.  Yesterday is over.  Today is a new day.  I’m doing it the right way.  I fell off the wagon a little bit, but I’m back on and I’m pissed off.  No more cheating!

Onward to success!
