April 1st

Oh shit… it’s April Fools Day. Never have I ever had less interest in playing along with this bullshit. The fascist states of america is already filled to bursting with fools and idiots and pure, unadulterated evil. Why anyone would think fake stories on the internet is entertaining during times like these… I just don’t get it.

Change of subject. The Red Sox are off today. We will be spared the slaughter and the constant strike outs. In five games thus far this season the team has struck out 123644258686134 times with about 86358629357 being Devers alone. Unfortunately, the Bruins are not off tonight. They will be annihilated by the Capitals. Times are tough in Boston sports-land these days. Why not? Times are tough everywhere.

Change of subject again. When was the original Star Trek given the Star Wars Special Edition treatment? After finally getting through Star Trek the Animated Series the other day, I decided to watch the original show all the way through. I’m through the two pilots and up to episode five now. I just watched Sulu take on the bridge with a sword while the Irish guy sings badly over the ship’s PA. I’m a little put off by most, if not all, of the exterior shots of the Enterprise being replaced by CGI. When did that happen? It doesn’t affect the episodes at all, but I still kinda don’t like it. I want my 1960’s models back. I want the pure form of the show back, even if it is less impressive and cheesy looking.

Change of subject again, again. Sticking with television, what is the deal with the month of April? We have the start of new seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale, Andor, The Last of Us, and Doctor Who. We’ll also see the last two episodes of Yellowjackets this month. This feels like collusion. This feels like the television industry conspiring to keep me from sleeping for the foreseeable future.

Again with the change of subjects again, again. I did not participate in the RPM Challenge’s Record Every Month thing. I wanted to. I was going to. I just didn’t. I’m thinking of maybe compensating for my failure by trying to do an April album in a month instead. Write and record 35 minutes worth of new music before the month ends. Will I be able to muster up the motivation? Probably not, but let’s give it a shot, eh?

Okay. Time to go and get ready for work. Welcome to April. Stay away from those damn April Fools jokes. It’s going to be a long and painful day on the ol’ internets. Good luck, everyone.

Now What?

It finally happened today. After over a year’s worth of effort the Great X-Files Rewatch Adventure finally came to an end.

I finished season 11. 11 seasons and two movies and the rewatch is complete.

Now what?

Part of me wants to go back to Star Trek. Jen and I started watching Voyager. I already rewatched Deep Space Nine. the original series and The Next Generation have both been rewatched numerous times in the past. Do I want to rewatch one of those again? Maybe. I don’t know. Enterprise? I don’t know. I was really not liking that show in the last year or so. Maybe I should give it another try?

Maybe I’ll poke around Netflix looking for some science fiction and if I don’t find anything that jumps out at me I’ll give Enterprise another look.

I’ll let you know.

AppleTV+ Was Messing With Me

There are so many good Science Fiction shows on AppleTV+. It’s a little crazy. Severance, For All Mankind, Silo, Foundation, Invasion. They are all killer shows. The latest is Constellation, which is weirding me out like mad. There will be eight episodes in this first season. Episode Seven was released today.

So there I was, trying to watch the new episode while sitting up in bed. Suddenly, without warning or provocation, the video started lagging. It went from, huh? to bad to worse quickly. I closed the app and opened it again. When it launched the episode it crashed. I tried again. It wouldn’t launch the episode at all.

I did what The IT Crowd always said to do, I turned my computer off and on again. Reboot city, population me. Did it work? Nope. When the episode tried to launch, the AppleTV+ app crashed. Over and over again.

Shit.

I tried to outsmart it. I know, thought me, I’ll watch something else on another app for a while. That will make AppleTV+ jealous so that it will work for me the next time I try it.

Success. Five minutes or so of Penny Dreadful season two episode five was all it took to guilt AppleTV+ into working again. I was able to finish the new episode of Constellation.

Don’t be a jerk, AppleTV+. I needs me my Sci Fi.

Caution: This Post is Going to be Ultra Nerdy

Spoiler alert: This post is about to be as nerdy as I can possibly get. Ultra nerdy. Uber nerdy. The zenith of nerdy.

I started my Doctor Who journey with the current series because that’s the one my step kids have watched. I didn’t know it at the time but they actually both skipped the three most resent season due to reviews that state the quality of the writing took quite a dip after season 10. The reviews were accurate, but I still really enjoyed the last three seasons.

My decision to start watching the original show too was based on a laugh. I thought it would be funny if I watched the old show and the kids watched the new show and then we could debate which was better. That was before I knew that the old show was 26 seasons and a TV movie, and that the first bunch of seasons were 40+ episodes each. There are so many seasons and so very many episodes. Suddenly the idea of watching the whole show felt very intimidating.

When I was a kid, the PBS network used to air Doctor Who reruns. Every now and then, when there was nothing else on, I would try to watch an episode. I never got terribly far. I just didn’t know what was going on and I didn’t care to do the background work to figure it out. There was no internet then so I couldn’t go to wikipedia and get the info. I’d just have to piece it together an episode at a time. No, that was too much work for me. My friend Mike was a fan and he encouraged me to try, but I never did.

The actor who played The Doctor on those PBS reruns was Tom Baker. I didn’t know it then, but he was the 4th Doctor. From my point of view he was the only Doctor. None of the other actors were known to me. It was Tom Baker or nothing. When I started my original series binge watch I thought about only watching his episodes and just skipping everyone else. In the end I decided against that, partially because I am a completist, but also because I am an idiot. No, I started with season one, episode one and just put my head down and powered through.

Last night I watched the last episode of season 11. At the very end of that one, Doctor #3, Jon Pertwee, dies and is regenerated into Doctor , Tom Baker. At last, I have arrived. I have now seen every episode (that still exists) with Doctors through 3, and 9 through 13. I have now watched the first eight episodes (two four episode serials) of season 12. The first two serials with the 4th Doctor. Maybe it’s a weird sense of misplaced nostalgia talking, but in those few episodes Tom Baker has catapulted to the top of the list of my favorite Doctors. There’s something about the attitude he brought to the roll. It’s the way he faces the end of universe with a smile and a laugh. He seems like he’s having a blast trying to keep everything around him from falling into chaos. It’s just fun to watch the guy having fun.

So if I had to rank the doctors I’ve seen so far from favorite to least favorite, the list would look something like this:

  • Tom Baker
  • #10 David Tennant
  • #11 Matt Smith
    • Note, second and third place are a dead heat. They could easily be swapped. I enjoyed both of them equally
  • #2 Patrick Troughton
  • Peter Capaldi
  • #3 Jon Pertwee
  • #13 Jodie Whittaker
  • #9 Christopher Eccleston
  • William Hartnell

This doesn’t imply that I did not enjoy the performances of the actors at the bottom of the list. It just means I enjoyed the other folks a little more. If you like your science fiction on the cheesier, campier, budgetarily-challenged side then I would recommend each and every one of these Doctors. They are all worth a try.

Just for completeness sake, I still have the following Doctors left to see. #5 Peter Davison, #6 Colin Baker (no relation), #7 Sylvester McCoy, #8 Paul McGann, #14 David Tennant (again), and #15 Ncuti Gatwa. Doctors #14 and 15 haven’t aired yet so I will have to wait for them. 14 will get three episodes starting in November and 15 will get season 14 starting sometime next year.

So there you have it, the nerdiest post in wordpress.com history. May Tom Baker continue to be the best Doctor for the next 6+ seasons, and may the Doctors I haven’t seen yet live up to the expectations. Nerd.

Star Trek Beyond — Mini Review

We went to see the new Star Trek movie tonight. I freakin’ loved it! I think it might have been better than Into Darkness, and I freakin’ loved that one too.

I might be biased though. I have said it before and I’ll say it again…

If Simon Pegg made a movie that consisted of nothing but Simon Pegg sitting on a chair watching paint dry, I would think it was Best Picture Oscar winning awesome. Seriously. I’m sure that at some point in his movie career he made a crap film, but I haven’t seen it… and I would probably love it anyway.

Star Trek Beyond: I approve.
