Genesis Birthdays

Today is Steve Hackett’s birthday. Tomorrow is Peter Gabriel’s birthday.

Let’s listen to some Genesis while wishing them both a happy birthday.

I’ve probably posted this video before. It’s actually pre-Peter Gabriel wearing costumes on stage. Not by much, but it is. Weird, huh?

Postponed Again

Band practice was once again postponed. It happened at just about the last minute. One of the guys had a family thing come up and had to take care of it. Unlike Genesis in 1974 our band understands that family comes first and no one said anything that was anything other than 100% supportive. Word on the street was that 1974 era Peter Gabriel was a little jealous.

Next time. We will play all the better next time. Seriously, I’ll have a capo so I can play that friggin’ Bryan Adams song without having to tune my guitar up a full step. Come on, Bryan Adams… a capo? Really? Just play the damn song in E like a real guitarist.

Pop Genesis

I don’t remember this, but the Instagram and Threads account for the band Genesis posted this today.

On this day in 1986 Genesis and four of it’s five “classic period” members were all in the US Billboard top 40 at the same time.

Genesis was at 37 with Invisible Touch. Not the worst piece of shit in their 80’s pop period, but definitely on the short list.

Steve Hackett’s band GTR, which also included Yes guitarist Steve Howe, was at 35 with When the Heart Rules the Mind.

Peter Gabriel was at 32 with Sledgehammer.

Phil Collins was at 26 with Take Me Home which is a song I completely forgot existed but I guess was a thing.

Mike Rutherford’s mostly awful pop side project Mike and the Mechanics was at number five with pretty awful All I Need is a Miracle.

Five Genesis and Genesis adjacent songs on the top 40 at the same time. It’s not like that week where The Beatles had something like six songs on the top 10 at the same time, but it’s pretty cool.

If only the five songs were… you know… better songs. Why couldn’t the Genesis song been Tonight Tonight Tonight, and the GTR song been Imagining, and the Peter Gabriel song been In Your Eyes (or This is the Picture, or Don’t Give Up, or Red Rain, or Mercy Street), and the Mike and the Mechanics song been… ummm… that one song that I didn’t hate… Silent Running, or something like that… and the Phil Collins song been something that wasn’t awful and completely forgettable which I am not sure was possible in 1986. When did I Don’t Care No More come out? That was long before ’86, wasn’t it?

On His Birthday?

I saw this on The ‘Gram today:

Today is also Peter Gabriel’s birthday.

Genesis released the first Peter-free record on Peter’s birthday.

Low blow, bro.

Random Thursday Thoughts

The first random thought on this fine Thursday afternoon is that it actually is Thursday and not Friday or Saturday. I mentioned in a post a couple of days ago that my inner calendar/clock is a mess this week and I am not quite sure why, but I was convinced all day Tuesday that it was Thursday, and then I was also convinced all day Wednesday that it was Thursday. Now that it actually is Thursday I can’t decide if my brain is convinced that it is Friday or Saturday, which doesn’t make sense because I don’t work on Saturdays but I’ve been working all day today and still at times I’ve felt like it was Saturday.

My brain is broken. Here’s a cat to make it feel better…

Most work days fine me playing podcasts through the Apple HomePod that’s next to my desk in the new office space in my step son’s room. The last couple of days have been different. I’ve been listening to music. Today has been a playlist made up of all of Peter Gabriel’s original, non-soundtrack, non-cover/tribute records both as a solo artist and with Genesis. I made this playlist a few days ago with the idea being I would shuffle it. Today I started from the first track of his first solo record and let it run. The transition from his second record to his third is utterly stunning. The first two records are good. Not great, but good. The third… it’s weirder, it’s a totally different sound/approach/feel, and it is so infinitely better than what he did in the few years before it that it made my head spin a little. I just started album number five… So… I think it’s safe to say it is the masterpiece of his solo career and again the improvement is dazzling.

Here’s a cat to help you appreciate Peter Gabriel the freakin’ legend…

It is January 25th today. It is 50 degrees outside. I actually went outside without a jacket on this morning. Granted, my shoes sank into the mud field that once was my yard, but other than that it was nice. This time of year the air can actually be painful if you go outside for a couple of quick minutes and are not bundled up. Today did not hurt at all.

Okay, that will do for random thoughts as my lunch break ends. I have some paperwork to finish up today and then I am making hamburgers for dinner. My wife made that request last night and I am more than happy to oblige.

Happy Thursday afternoon, everyone… assuming it actually is Thursday. Who knows, right?

A Good Day for Genesis Fans

Today is a good day for fans of people who used to be in Genesis.

Peter Gabriel’s first album of new original material in 45000 years has finally been released. It’s called i/o. He’s been releasing it one song at a time for the past year, but the whole thing is out now and it’s pretty freakin’ magical. Is it as good as So or his third record? No. It’s good though.

I knew that one was coming, but I didn’t know about this one. Steve Hackett released a single today. It’s called People of the Smoke. I haven’t had a chance to listen to it yet but it’s on my to do list for today. I knew he had an album on the way sometime relatively soon, but I didn’t know there would be a single out today. Excellent!

This coincidence is making me wonder what Anthony Phillips is doing today. I wonder…

Genesis on The Midnight Special

I read a story about this earlier this morning. The old 70’s TV show The Midnight Special has a YouTube channel and they released a video of Genesis playing The Musical Box in 1973. The article mentioned that the show originally included them playing Watcher of the Skies as well but that hadn’t been released on the YouTubes. I went looking for The Musical Box at lunch today and Watcher of the Skies actually came out this morning as well.

Enjoy watching Peter Gabriel play dress up!

Figures that the camera panned up off of Steve Hackett’s hands just before he played one of Earth’s first examples of two hand tapping. Oh well.

I’m a Stinker

Yeah, I said I was done with this, but I totally lied.

I drove to Market Basket and back. I took the long way around and listened to Supper’s Ready all the way through. That reminded me that Peter Gabriel is coming to Boston in September, and Steve Hackett is coming in October. Also, Steve Hackett is supposed to be playing the Foxtrot album in it’s entirety, which means he’s going to play Supper’s Ready, which means I HAVE to be there. I have to see at least one member of Genesis play that perfect piece of music, all 23 minutes of it, live at least once before I die. I have to.
