Valentine’s Day Roses

I blew the whole flowers-on-Valentine’s thing.

My wife was supposed to work from home today, so I had flowers delivered to the house.  She ended up working from the office.  DAMN!

The upside is that I actually got to see the flowers.  I always have them sent to her office, so I rarely get to see them.  This time was different.

RPM Day 14

I had another slow, but not entirely unproductive day yesterday.  Song #13 is currently planned as the four part suite I talked about in yesterday’s update.  As of right now, parts A, C, and D have been sketched out.  A and C are on my iPad, while D is on my iPhone.  Again, I love living in the future.  B will need to be developed on my MacBook because I want to use a weird time signature and the iOS version of Garageband can’t do that.  I haven’t put any guitars onto these projects yet.  Maybe tonight or tomorrow I’ll get to that.

I also threw together another new project on my iPhone yesterday morning.  The structure is similar to another song that’s in the works, but if I should chose to keep it it will be song #14… which means FAWM could be completed this year.  I suppose that technically FAWM is complete now.  I have in fact written music for 14 new songs.  However, I don’t like to call the challenge complete until I have 14 complete songs, including lyrics and melodies.  That’s going to be the hard part this year, even more than usual.

My cold keeps getting worse.  I can barely talk right now, never mind sing.  I had planned to sneak some singing in here and there in the short space of time between my wife leaving for work and me leaving for work, but we’ve been car pooling on non-kid days.  I do have a vacation day scheduled for late in the month.  Hopefully I’ll be better by then, but I don’t think recording vocals for 14 songs in one day is really doable.

I’m going to have to figure something out.

MRI

Right in the other side of this wall they are using the software that I support at work. I don’t think they are happy about it. I’ve heard one loud sigh of frustration, but they figured out the problem. It was a user error.

I think I’ll just quietly sit here with my mouth shut.

Request: We Need Some Happy Thoughts

There is something going on today that we need the universe’s help with.  No, I will not say what it is.  I know how weird that might sound given how ridiculously, stupidly, often I post here, but you are just going to have to trust me.  This one is personal and it will stay that way for now.

Some one very close to me will need as many happy thoughts sent her way as possible at 10:00am Eastern time today.  I would guess that by noon Eastern time the need will be over (for now), so if you don’t jump on the wagon at exactly 10:00am sharp it’s still okay to think positive.

Whatever kind of happy thoughts you can spare.  Call it positive energy, good vibes, happy thoughts, or even prayers.  I feel a little hypocritical asking for prayers, but that’s not going to stop me.  It all boils down to happy thoughts, right?  My sister and I call these kinds of thoughts “red head vibes.”  You would be absolutely shocked at how well a good dose of red head vibes can work.  I kid you not, the Boston Red Sox, Boston Bruins, and New England Patriots (and if memory serves, the Providence Bruins) all owe recent league championships to red head vibes.  When Lisa and I send out those red head vibes, all sorts of good things happen.  It works people, it really works.

In all seriousness.  If you could spare some happy thoughts and some positive energy between 10:00am and noon Eastern time today, we would be very appreciative.

Thank you, universe!

RPM Day 13

Hello and welcome to day 13 of the 2013 RPM Challenge. Yesterday was not a complete waste, but it was close. The Bruins played the Rangers and lost in the shootout after a dramatic third period come back. This past weekend’s new episode of The Walking Dead reached iTunes and became available to my season pass. I had to watch that, right?

I did put a little more thought into the idea of a new suite type thingie. When I say “suite” I am thinking of something like “A Day in the Life” where you have a John Lennon song with a bit of a Paul McCartney song shoved into the middle. This time I’m thinking of three song fragments making up four sections of the suite. The A section will be a more or less complete song. I actually wrote something for this last night. It’s slow and riffy In E minor. The B section will be faster and in an odd time signature. I’ll probably do what I always do in this cases and write something in 7/8. I’ll change the key too, probably either A minor or B minor. The C section will be a reprisal of the A section, only shorter. Finally the D section will be something completely unrelated. I’m thinking really, really slow, quiet, as trippy as a non-drug user can make it, and instrumental. It will probably just end up being a long guitar solo. I’m also thinking of maybe going modal for this part. Mixolydian maybe?

Coming up with the B and D sections are my goal for tonight, but we have a few very important personal things to take care of today, so I might have to put it off until tomorrow.

I’m still thinking positive, but at the same time I’ve never had to record a vocal while suffering from a cold. This might all be a waste of time this year. Who knows.

The Boston Bruins

I haven’t posted about hockey in a while…  here’s a random thought.

The NHL will never earn my forgiveness for this season’s lock out.  They will never earn my forgiveness for the other two lock outs either.

There is, however, exactly one way in which the NHL can calm me down.  Exactly one way that they can get me to step down from my furious little soap box (that no one ever notices) and get me to blend back into the crowd.

How can they do that?  Simple.  The Boston Bruins have to consistently kick the bloody hell out of every other team in the league.  If that happens, I’ll relax and be distracted from my hatred and raving madness.

So far, so good.

The Bruins have played the fewest games in the Eastern Conference (thank you, blizzard) and have the second most points.  They have played 10 games and earned 17 points.  Do the math, kids.  They are three points away from perfection.  They have only lost twice, and once was in overtime.  That is a team that is doing a pretty decent job of taking my mind off my anger.

Let’s note that Chicago has a better winning percentage right now, but frankly the Blackhawks have not had to play the Bruins, and I would definitely bet on my home town team in a head to head match up.  The Hawks are awesome right now, but they ain’t no Bruins.

The Big surprise for me has been the goaltending.  Khudobin is going to be a question mark all year just for his lack of experience.  Rask is different.  Tuukka has been the Bruins #1 goalie in the past and he’s been amazing at times, but he’s also blown a playoff series after taking a 3-0 lead.  I really don’t think anything short of a Tim Thomas-esque Stanley Cup championship performance is ever going to make me have faith in Tuukka after that Philly debacle.  Having said that, Rask is playing like he’s possessed.  Given the abortion of a shortened season (see?  I’m still pissed after all) could he stay this hot right through the end?  It’s doubtful, but I don’t think it’s impossible.

Go Bruins!

RPM Day 12

Nothing new to report from yesterday. I had far more important things to do that left no time for music. In the interest of not posting nothing, I am thinking of an idea for another suite type, slightly longer form song. I tried that during RPM a couple of years ago and botched it big time. Maybe I can do better now.
