It’s Going to be a Bad Day

My sleep data is better than yesterday, though* it would have been hard to be worse.  I keep reading the data off of my Apple Watch, but I have less and less confidence in it’s accuracy every day.  Once again it said I was up for 90 minutes at one stretch last night and I most definitely was not.  I also fell asleep while Nana-Sitting last night and it didn’t catch that at all, though that could be down to the apnea.  When I had my last check in with the CPAP folks I told them I had doubts that the mask is the right one.  They told me to stick with it for a while and see if it got better.  Once again last night I had to pop it off about once per hour.  Nope, not getting better.  I do feel a little more alive today though, so there’s that at least.

I am about to leave for weight watchers.  I stepped on the bathroom scale.  I’m up.  Way up.  I’m still going to weigh in though.  I’m going to take it like a man (meaning I am going to cross my fingers and toes and eyes in the hopes that my bathroom scale is just wrong today).

It’s the weekend though.  We’ve got that going for us.

Happy weekend!

*I seem to have lost the ability to type the word “though”.  Any time I try it comes out as “thought”.  Don’t get old, kids.  Don’t do it.  Stay young forever.

I Have No Memory At All

Don’t get old, kids.  I hate it when I forget stuff, and the older I get the more I forget.

We were having a little Lizardfish group chat today.  The usual, are we practicing this weekend and what new stuff should we learn, discussion.  One of the guys put a bunch of youtube links into the thread.  They were all songs he wants to talk us into learning.

I swear I was planning on doing exactly the same thing.  There was a song that popped into my head the other day and I thought, we gotta play it!  I didn’t have a chance to send out a link, but I was going to.  Now that we’re all songs and links focused I can’t for the life of me remember what song I was thinking about.  I’m so annoyed.  I could blame it on poor sleep (see my previous post) but I don’t think that would be accurate.  I just forget.

What the hell was it?

Slight tangent.  Speaking of music, my gear acquisition syndrome is ramping up again.  50/90 is coming and my idiot brain is thinking of new toys that I could use during the process.  I saw an attenuator on reverb.com that looked promising.  Lots of good reviews and only $50.  I want to get another microphone.  A couple of years ago during RPM I was recording guitar parts in stereo (kind of, more like duel mono) by playing through two amps at once and recording onto two tracks.  I was running direct out of both amps though so I didn’t need mics.  This year i want to do the same only with speakers, and I only keep one mic at home.  All of my other mics are in use at band practice.  I am also thinking I might be in the market for a cheap acoustic guitar, preferably with some sort of pick up in it.  Just something to beat on at home that I can run a line out of into my computer.  I could record stereo (again, duel mono) by using a direct out and a mic.  I want to play my 12-string more this year, but I also want to play some six string.  We’ll see.

So many toys, so little time and money.  Wheeee!

Bad Night

The numbers on the two apps actually look worse than the reality, but last night was a bad night’s sleep and the CPAP is a big part of the reason.  I had mask problems three times between 12:15 and 1:15.  I was really fed up.  I came close to just chucking the whole thing for the night.  Eventually things got better, but my watch didn’t even register me as asleep until after 2:00 and I was up at 5:00.  Not good at all.  I am already wishing I could go to bed early tonight, but I’ve got a Nana-sitting shift tonight and I won’t be home until after 11:00.  Crud.

Mentally Damaged Mosquito

Bugs.  Three of them.  Driving me nuts.

I’m working from home today.  There is a fly in the house.  One single fly.  What an asshole this guy is.  He’s flying in and out of every room and he’s buzzing LOUD.  I’ve been swinging that electric fly swatter at him.  I will feel no remorse when I electrocute this prick.  There was also a moth in the kitchen when I was putting the groceries away before work.  I kept swatting at him and kept missing.  Jerk.  I mean, I eventually got him, but he was distracting me from putting away my granola bars.  Prig.

The third bug was different.  It was a mosquito.  I think it was a severely mentally ill mosquito.  It wasn’t bothering me.  It wasn’t biting me.  It was bothering my Diet Pepsi bottle.  I may have been imagining things, or maybe just misunderstanding… but I’m pretty sure it was trying to bite the bottle.  I know Diet Pepsi is a decent cola drink, but couldn’t you go find a bottle of regular Coke to attack?  It’s the real thing after all.  Mr Damaged Mosquito is very dead now.  His end had nothing to do with a Pepsi bottle, unless you want to say he was distracted by it and therefore didn’t see me coming.

How’d I sleep last night?  Numbers wise it was comparable to Tuesday.  Six hours or so of sleep, a little more than four of restful sleep.  Once again, the CPAP mask kept waking me up.  Maybe once an hour.  I would be laying in bed, sound asleep, and I’d move my head the wrong way and the seal on my face would come loose somewhere near the side of my mouth, and I’d wake up.  I have yet to be able to fix it by just adjusting the mask.  Whatever I do it keeps leaking.  It happened enough to actually show up on the MyAir numbers.  The only way I can fix it is to take the whole thing off and put it back on.  I have to sit up when I do that, and because I’m 48 years old that means my bladder comes alive and I have to go to the bathroom.  I just want to go back to sleep but the mask won’t let me.  I nearly shut the whole thing off at one point but I thought better and put it all back on.

How do I feel today though?  Well on Monday morning I felt okay.  Not great.  I was feeling sleeping by the afternoon as usual, but not too bad.  Tuesday was the same.  Wednesday was different.  I was exhausted all day.  I clearly did not sleep as well as I did the previous two nights.  Today I feel more like the first two days.  I was yawning a little in the first hour or so after I got up, but after a shower and a trip to Market Basket I was better.  I’m not sure if it’s because of my sleep or the previously mentioned Diet Pepsi.  I don’t know.

More data points to come tomorrow.  I can see how excited you all are.

Continents

My step kids flew to Aruba today with their father and step mother.  They landed safe and sound about an hour ago.  Insert the sigh of relief here.

I was watching the progress of the flight on a map and it started my tiny brain thinking: Is Aruba technically in South America?  The answer is, yes.  That means my two step kids have officially set foot on three (3) continents.  North America, Europe, and South America.  I’m still stuck on one.

I have a lot of friends and family who have visited various places in Europe.  They are all in the two continent club.  Like the kids, my friends Larry and Nawal have been to three.  In their case it’s North America, Europe, and Africa.  I’ve been wracking my brain for about 10 minutes now trying to think if I know anyone else who is in the three continent club, or even the four continent club.  Maybe my brother in law’s sister?  She and her husband lived in Italy.  Did they ever travel South or East from there?  I don’t know.  Do I know anyone who has visited Australia?  Japan?  India?  Oh, I know a couple of people who’ve been to India, and in college I knew people from Iran (I think he was from Iran at least… what was that guy’s name?), Venezuela, and Nepal, but have any of them been to a third continent?

Maybe some day I’ll join the two continent club.  Not very likely that I’ll make it to three.  If the current US political system doesn’t change I might want to emigrate to Australia… they speak English and it’s really, really far away.  That could work.  Who knows.

Enjoy the trip, kids.  Have a blast!

Sleep Data – Day 3

I promise you, dear readers (there were seven of you yesterday?  WOOHOO!) that I won’t be logging sleep data for long.  It’s just new and interesting to me to have actual numbers to explain why I am so exhausted all the time.  I’ll get over it soon enough.  I mean, I did sign up for this year’s 50/90 yesterday.  Oh the thrill!

The MyAir app is telling me I did well last night.  My score is over 90 again.  Yay!  The SleepWatch app, however, is telling me I didn’t do so well.  Three hours of restful sleep out of 5:15 total sleep time.  I woke up a little before 2:00am, then again at 3:00, and again at 4:00.  I stayed awake for maybe 20 minutes or so on that last one and then didn’t wake again until 5:30 or so.  The app said I was in a period of “disturbed sleep” from about 3:00-4:30.  I don’t think that’s true.  I woke up at 3:00ish, took off the mask for a few minutes, went to the bathroom, and then went back to sleep.  I thought the rest of that hour was okay.  I don’t know if I am wrong or my watch misread the situation.

There are two things I know for sure.  One, I didn’t snore.  At least I didn’t snore enough to wake my wife.  That is a huge success.  Two, I am completely exhausted this morning. That’s a serious fail.  I went to bed at 10:30 or so and was in bed for seven hours, but I just kept waking up.  Monday night it was the mask losing it’s seal that woke me up a few times.  That happened again, but more often I just woke up.  I’m going to chalk it up to not being used to having a mask suction stuck to my face while I sleep and I’m going to hope I get better at staying under.

Fingers crossed for better results tonight.
