2023 50/90 Challenge Day 12/90

Lots of progress today. I put rhythm guitars on five songs and lead guitar onto one. That’s it. Now that I write it down it doesn’t seem like a lot, but the six songs with progress felt like a super big deal at the time.

The works in progress playlist has been updated. The songs are in order of when they were started, not when they were last worked on.

I have three songs ready for vocals. I’m hoping for car music in the morning. We’ll see if I can get it done.

Fun with Guitars

I recorded guitars for a bunch of songs today. The performances suck to the high heavens, but they exist so… yeah.

I did not record direct today. I had a mic on a speaker like the old timers used to do. Direct signals are fine and all, but making actual noise is so much better. Every time.

It’s a Miracle

Today is a car maintenance day. Our Kia needs an oil change and an inspection sticker.

I got a late start and expected a huge line at the oil change shop. Nope, no line at all! I pulled straight in! It’s a miracle!

I think the place I normally go to for inspections might be closed today. We will see soon enough. Fingers crossed. 🤞

Dinner Invite

Daily writing prompt
If you could host a dinner and anyone you invite was sure to come, who would you invite?

Once again, super vague. What are the rules? Is this an alive or dead, any humans in history kind of dinner engagement or is it just living people?

Regardless, it’s going to start with my wife and step kids. They are a given.

Who else? The Beatles, of course. But which era Beatles? 1964 Beatlemania Beatles? Pre-fame Hamburg, Germany Beatles? 1966 post-weed, pre-LSD Beatles? Probably that one. Maybe. I don’t know.

World leaders from history? Abe Lincoln and John F Kennedy, obviously. Partly because I could go over all of those weird coincidences between their two presidencies and see if they get a laugh out of it. Teddy Roosevelt would be a good one. He was a fascinating guy. Biden and Obama, of course. Not for political reasons but just to witness the bromance in person.

I would invite the three members of Rush, of course. I would let them sit at their own table though, separate from the rest of the group. I wouldn’t want Neil to be uncomfortable, you know? I would invite the classic 70’s line up of Genesis, but I would be afraid the three private school guys would be savagely fighting all the time the way I have heard they often did, so maybe not?

I would consider inviting Trump and Musk and Besos (sp?) and Zuckerberg (sp?), only to kick them in the balls and then throw them out on their asses. That would be immensely satisfying.

This is a pretty dumb question, but it is slightly amusing to think about. I guess.

2023 50/90 Challenge Day 11/90

Not a lot today. I wrote lyrics and melody for one song, also arranging a song form for that same song. I added song idea #18 as well. The hope is that I will play shit loads of guitar tomorrow and then do car music and more guitar on Sunday. I expect to have at least a couple of songs ready to mix by Monday.

That’s the goal at least. I also need to get an oil change and an inspection sticker on one of the cars. That has to happen tomorrow, so we’ll see if that throws off my place in the universe at all.

Wish me luck. I am so happy the weekend is here. Now it’s almost bed time so I am going to watch some Doctor Who. The next episode is called Blink and I hear it’s one of the best from the current series. Let’s find out, shall we?

Rained Out

I had two plans for my lunch break today. Jen and I were going to go for a short walk. Just to the end of the street and back. Then I was going to cook a hamburger on the grill again. I was hoping to break for lunch around 1:00pm.

At noon I went upstairs for a minute. I had opened all of the windows in the house this morning and it should have been glorious up there but it wasn’t quite. It was really humid and the sky outside was almost completely dark. Like post-sunset dark.

In other words… there was clearly a thunderstorm brewing. I closed the windows. Just in time. Five minutes later the sky fell. Massive, crazy downpour. My lunch plans were completely rained out and I am quite sad about it.

Tonight after work I have to go to the Apple store. I checked the weather. The thunderstorm and the rain ended by about 2:00, I think. The forecast is telling me that there’s a chance for a second round of thunderstorms… right about the time that I get off from work and have to go outside.

Son of a…!

Better with Age

Daily writing prompt
What do you think gets better with age?

Okay then, this is an interesting question. I am not sure how to respond. The standard answer is booze, right? I don’t drink though so I can’t use that as the answer.

Star Wars. That keeps getting better with age, doesn’t it? Odd that the prequels are getting more popular and more widely accepted as time goes by. Does that mean they are getting better?

It goes against popular convention but I feel marraige gets better with age. Hollywood tells us that the fire and the passion go out after a while, but to me the connection grows deeper and that makes things better. The longer we’re together the more I love my wife and the better our relationship feels. When I come home after a day in the office, the feeling I have when I see her… It’s magic. Truly. I don’t tell her this enough and maybe that’s a negative change, but inside? The way I feel? Yeah, it gets better with age.

We got a pretty late start. I was 36 and she was 32. That was 16 years ago. We didn’t have a wild youthful relationship period the way younger folks in their 20’s do, but I wouldn’t change a thing. I just need to do a better job making sure my beloved bride knows how deeply I love her, and how that love continues to grow with each day.

That’s something that keeps getting better with age.
