Times Square Rally

I just saw a post on one of the social media outlets/twitter clones that says there is going to be an Anti Project 2025 rally in Times Square on Saturday July 27th at 7:00pm.

Huh…

I’ve been looking for an excuse to spend a weekend in New York. Usually just having a fun weekend get away to the biggest city around is all the reason I need. Maybe we could add something more productive as additional incentive?

Huh… I wonder… let’s think on this a little bit…

Directionless

It is weird, you know? Now that I’ve run out of daily writing prompts and have kicked the habit (so to speak) I feel like I’ve lost my blogging mojo somewhat. Like… now what do I do? You know what I mean, jelly bean?

Today is the 4th of July. That is meaningless now that the united states supreme court has declared that the president is above the law. We the people, except for the president, right? Fuck it, I don’t care. My country is dead. Nothing to do now except vote for the guy who won’t abuse his new dictatorial powers. Whatever.

The holiday no longer has any meaning except that it’s now 50 songs in 90 days challenge season. From today through October 1st I am going to try to write a shite load of shitty songs. Be warned, I am going to write about that a lot. It’s only 8:18am and I already have one riff written. There will be tons more to come, I think. Unless I wuss out and lose motivation and stop working… like last year… and almost every year that I’ve tried this dumb thing.

The holiday is meaningless now but it’s still a day off during the summer. The plan is to have a cookout. Burgers on the grill for lunch. Chicken on the grill for dinner. Of course climate change has turned New England into New Seattle and it rains here almost every day. The forecast calls for thunderstorms right around dinner time. Hoo-fucking-ray, am I right?

What else… binge TV watching. What are we checking out these days? The Acolyte is excellent. It was good through three episodes, then ramped up big time starting with episode four. There are six episodes out and two left to go. Really looking forward to seeing how it ends. The Boys has a new episode out today. I haven’t watched it yet. House of the Dragon is just as spectacular as you hoped it would be. Over on Netflix I am trying to get back into The Witcher. I watched each of the first two seasons when they came out. They were okay. I started the third season when it first came out but lost track of it. I’ve watched a couple more episodes this week and am having a hard time remembering who everyone is and what they are trying to do. I’ll power through. I started watching Dark. I think I am three episodes into the first season. It’s okay. It’s a little tough to follow given that multiple actors are playing each character. Also, it’s a German show and I’m having a hard time taking some of the hairstyles seriously. I mean… wow. Not that that sort of thing catches my eye at all, but really… wow. There is also Torchwood on Max. It’s good. It’s not great. I’ll power through it, for completeness sake.

I’m sitting at my desk in the cellar right now. I just saw a spider. That’s not unusual. Our cellar is kind of the Spider Kingdom. I am not one who is afraid of spiders or weirded out by spiders or anything like that. I usually just ignore them and let them eat the other bugs. This guy though… it was big. Like… it’s going to haunt my nightmares big. I tried to terminate it with extreme prejudice using a fly swatter but I missed. I can’t find it now. I fear that it is going to come hunting for me to get revenge. I mean… it was big enough that if we still have mice hiding out down here then they might be in trouble. It was that big.

Yeah… see what I mean about me being directionless, bloggily speaking?

I Feel Like a Wrung Out Dish Rag

Hey Americans. How we doing today? Specifically the Americans who are not a part of the maga cult or the republican pro-dictatorship/anti-Constitution camp.

I feel like I was hit by a train. I feel like I was run over by a steam roller. I feel like a wrung out dish rag.

248 years was a pretty good run, I guess.

I’m not going to hang my flag on the 4th of July. What’s the point? I’m not going to buy sparklers and be all happy and celebratory like I wrote about yesterday. What’s the point? I’ll just treat Thursday like a vacation day rather than a holiday. I’ll probably still have a cook out or something but other than that? Why bother. If the supreme court no longer considers the US to be a thing then why the fuck should we?

The US Monarchy

I promise you all that earlier today when I wrote something about this year’s 4th of July being the last authentic 4th of July the United States will ever celebrate, I was referring to the 50/50 chance that a fascist will again be elected president in November, and how that fascist has actually stated publicly that he will act as a dictator.

That’s what I was talking about. There’s a good chance that the wrong person will win the presidential election this year and put an end to the country that declared itself independent from England on July 4, 1776 and has thus celebrated independence day on that date every year that followed.

I did not somehow, magically know that the supreme court of the united states (lower case letters on purpose as I don’t capitalize offices held by fascists whether elected or appointed) would rule that the president of the united states is above the law and therefore can do anything that he pleases without any sort of check or balance against the office. I didn’t realize that they were going to issue a ruling that in effect declares the president of the united states king, and thus declaring that our democratic republic is at an end and the entire Constitution is invalid. I really thought we were going to get one more happy 4th of July before the rug would be rudely pulled out from under us. I didn’t see the future where our society would be ended on July 1st.

Sorry about that.

Guilty

I’m late to the party tonight because I’ve been driving all day but…….

Good news, even though I’m sure he’ll never set food in a jail cell. It’s still good news.

Vote

Tonight at just after 7:00pm I cast ballot number 345 in Methuen, MA precinct five. It was just under an hour before the polls close. It’s 8:00pm as I type this so I can now say past tense, the polls closed.

There were no races of consequence, really. One local race was unopposed, another had about 15 candidates for 35 seats. Another was President Biden running against a few people I’ve never heard of who have zero chance of winning. There was one two candidate race. Maybe my vote will have meaning in that one.

That’s okay. I feel like a hypocrite when I miss an election. Even when there are no races that require a large turn out. We’ll have one of those in November this year. Vote against the fascists. Vote against the maga cult. Vote against trump. Vote for Biden. Vote Democrat. Let’s have a blue wave. We have eight months to organize. Let’s do it.

Two Local Political Events

Today is March 5th here in Massachusetts. This year that means two things.

First and foremost, it is Super Tuesday today. That means it’s Primary Election Day here as well as a bunch of other states. I have not voted yet. I plan to vote after dinner tonight. It’s going to be tight as far as time goes, but the polls are open until 8:00pm so I should be able to get there with time to spare. Keep your fingers crossed.

March 5th also has another noteworthy event, historically speaking. Today is the anniversary of The Boston Massacre. On this day in 1770 a bunch of Bostonians were shot by English troops. It was an important event that turned into one of our nation’s most famous propaganda vehicles, thanks in part to this Paul Revere image:

Here’s a link to the wikipedia article, which I did not read but am willing to assume it is accurate because trust is a thing. Also, I took the image from wikipedia as well.

I could have sworn I had a photo of the victim’s memorial that is in the Granary Burial Ground in Boston, but I can’t find it anywhere. I guess I’ll just have to go for a walk down the Freedom Trail this summer to take another pic.

Anyway, go vote (where applicable).

Patriotism

Daily writing prompt
Are you patriotic? What does being patriotic mean to you?

Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel.

Samuel Johnson

I don’t know how this works in other countries, but in the United States of America the word patriotic has two definitions. At least it used to. Now it seems to have developed a third.

I once heard a description of how Americans love their country from former US Senator and former Saturday Night Live writer Al Franken. I don’t remember the exact wording he used, but it came down to conservatives love their country the way a small child loves their parent. The country is always right and knows everything there is to know. A liberal loves their country the way an adult loves another adult. They see their flaws and accept them but also want to help them grow and learn and be better.

I fall into the liberal category. My country has always been a friggin’ mess. We have always made mistakes, many of them catastrophic. Despite that, I still love my country because I can see how good we can be. I see the positives along with the negatives. So am I patriotic? Not in the flag waving, We’re number one chanting way that conservatives are, but in a let’s fix our problems and be better than we are way. Yes, yes I am.

So what is our new, third definition of patriot in the USA? It comes from the maga cult, of course. It’s not a love or a respect for our country, it’s more like worship of an authority figure or a cult leader. The cult leader is above the law and free from repercussions for his actions. About half of the voting population sees their fuhrer figure as all knowing and all powerful and will agree with everything he says, no matter how idiotic or how un-american. Or how clearly nazi. Or how flat out evil. Half of our country is pro-fascist and it signals the end of everything we stand for. It’s just a matter of time at this point. It’s already over. Hitler didn’t need to win the second world war. He just had to be patient.

Our future looks a little like this, I think:

Apology Letter

I just heard that Sidney Powell (remember her?) has plead guilty in her Georgia election subversion case.

Here’s the CNN article.

Allow me to quote a portion of the story:

Fulton County prosecutors are recommending a sentence of six years probation. Powell will also be required to testify at future trials and write an apology letter to the citizens of Georgia.

By Marshall Cohen

Right then, let’s make this clear. What we’re saying here is that the penalty for trying to overthrow a presidential election is having to write an apology letter. Let me read it again…

Yup, six years probation, meaning no jail time, having to testify at future trials, which she would have been subpoenaed for anyway, and having to write an apology letter to the citizens of Georgia.

Yup, I think that’s what the article is saying. Rig a presidential election… write an apology letter. I’m sure it’s going to be utterly heartfelt and sincere, right?

Right?

Indicted Again

Third time is the charm? This is the one I’ve really wanted. String him up by his treasonous toes.

He’s still going to win the nomination by a landslide though because half of the people in this country are at best fascist sympathizers. There is no America left to save. Not really.
