Stupid A’s

That’s it. I’m done with ’em.

Every time I pick the Oakland A’s to win in the playoffs they let me down. They are now the baseball equivalent of the San Jose Sharks. They are dead to me. What’s the deal with that part of California anyway? They always disappoint.

Tomorrow I’ll post division round picks where I’ll pick Kansas City to be blown off the map by the Angels. Until then…

Thanks for nothing, A’s.

MBL Playoff Predictions – Wild Card Round

I’m still not sure if I’m a fan of these one game wild card playoffs.  I’m also still not sure if I want to do predictions posts through the whole post season.  It couldn’t hurt though, right?  If I decide to not do it in the future then it’s no big deal.

For now though, here are my wild card playoff predictions…

Oakland at Kansas City:  It figures, two teams I like are facing each other and they only get one game.  What a bummer.  I’ve quietly been a Royals fan ever since George Brett hit .390 in 1980, although I rooted against them in the World Series that year.  I was nine years old and I played on the Phillies in little league.  There was no way I was rooting against the Phils in the World Series.

I have been a quiet Oakland fan for a while too.  It took a while to get over the Red Sox losing to them in both the 1988 and 1990 AL championship round, but I did get over it while watching their great pitching staffs in the early 2000s.  Was Moneyball a factor for me?  Not consciously, although I did like the way they were always competitive even though they seemed to have a mediocre line up.

Today though, who do I root for?  Who do I pick in tonight’s game?

Oakland.  Why?  Two words: Jon Effin’ Lester.

Lester is clutch.  Lester is twice a World Series hero.  One does not simply bet against Lester in a one game playoff.  Also, selfishly, there is the whole fact that the Red Sox suckitude was unparallelled this year and seeing one of our guys succeed in the post season would be a nice rubbing of salt into the wound for the team’s management.

I’m going with Oakland tonight.

San Francisco at Pittsburgh:  I really don’t have a clue on this one.  The Red Sox disaster (worst to first to worst) sucked a lot of my baseball interest away from me this year, and as little as I followed the AL, I followed the NL significantly less.  So who do I pick?  If I go with the Pirates I can justify it by saying it levels out my utter hatred of Pittsburgh in the NHL.  It also lets me root against a former New York team.  Yeah.  Screw New York!  I’m going with the Pirates tomorrow night.

There you have it.  My predictions for the two wild card games.

Let’s go A’s!

Not This Year

We’ll have to settle for one championship in the house this year.

My step son’s team took an early lead but the other team chipped away. In the bottom of the fifth (they play six innings) the other team took the lead. His team came back in the top of the sixth and retook the lead, only to lose in a walk off. It was tough to take, but it was a great game and they had a heck of a season.

They’ll get ’em next year.

They Are Dead to Me

Had they come out and played well last night (and Monday night) and lost I would feel better. No. The Bruins played like cow shit for the first half of last night’s game and never had a chance. The score was never out of hand, but they were never close.

It was not a choke on par with the 2010 3-0 lead. It was not a choke on par with losing game six of the Cup finals last year. It was, however, a monumental suck of a choke.

The hell with them. They’re dead to me.

It’s baseball season.

Go Red Sox.

Is Tonight the Night?

So is tonight the night?

Is tonight the night that the curse of the President’s Trophy takes the Bruins out of the playoffs?

Is tonight the night that the team universally favored to win the Eastern Conference gets eliminated by their arch rival after previously holding a 3-2 lead in the series?

After Monday night’s suck fest, my heart and my head are in agreement. I have to say that yes it is.

If the game five Bruins show up tonight they will have a chance. If the game six Bruins show up, it’s time to start booking tee-times.

I don’t want Bruins hockey to end, but after Monday it would almost feel merciful if it ends tonight.

The Series is Tied

I would like to thank the Boston Bruins for the little birthday gift they gave me last night. They beat the Canadiens in overtime to tie their second round series at two games a piece. It is pleasing to live in a world where we are tied with Montreal, instead of the alternative which was a world where we trailed Montreal three games to one.

I would also like to thank the Bruins for scoring the overtime goal very quickly and not making me stay up all night shivering in fear.

Thank you, Bruins! Now go win game five!

No Score After Two Periods

You know, the other day when I said I wanted the Bruins to stop spotting the Canadiens a two goal lead, I didn’t mean that they shouldn’t score at all themselves. After two periods in a must win game four, there is no score.

Come on, Bruins. Let’s put a few biscuits in that basket.

Much Better, Bruins

The Bruins beat the Red Wings in game two of their first round series today. That made me happy. The Red Sox are losing right now, but if that is the price we have to pay for a Bruins post season win, then so be it.

Go Bruins!

Bruins/Wings Game Two

We’re a little more than three hours away from the start of game two. The Bruins must win this game. They must win this game. No more of this 1-0 shutout loss crap. They must score early. They must score often. They must embed the Detroit players into the boards in much the same way that that damn tick embedded itself in me. They must punish the Wings for each inch of ice they try to take. They must punish the Wings for each inch of ice they try to keep us from taking.

I started reading Bobby Orr’s autobiography this morning. If that isn’t enough to inspire the Bruins in game two then nothing is.

Go Bruins!
Punish the Wings!
Make them fear you!
Go Bruins!
