Stomach Fun

Two days from now will mark one year and 11 months since my Gastric Bypass Surgery. That 2nd anniversary is right around the corner.

Today I think back to one of the regular check ins I had with the surgeon. I told her that I was having some issues with pain. I would eat something, then a few hours would go by and I would start to get a bad stomach ache. Am I doing something wrong?

No, she said. It’s normal. You’re hungry.

Huh… hungry, eh? That’s it?

Yup, you’re hungry.

Sure enough, when I get that type of stomach pain I have something to eat and it goes away. That’s all well and good except… well… I don’t want to eat. I want to not be hungry. I want to have breakfast and then not have anything else to eat until lunch, then not have anything else to eat until dinner, then not have anything else to eat until a pre-bedtime snack. That’s not how it works though.

Today I started feeling it about 2.5 hours after breakfast. I started feeling it about 20 minutes before my lunch break. I started feeling it again two hours and 50 minutes after lunch. It was probably 45 minutes before dinner. I had to have a snack. It was a small snack and it made me feel better, but not completely better. Now I’m having dinner so that should hopefully fix things for the next few hours.

Like I said though, I don’t want to be tied to food like this. I don’t want to feel hungry. I just want to take advantage of the fact that my bypassed stomach pouch is a little tiny guy and doesn’t require a lot of food to fill it.

I am not complaining. Not even a little bit. I am fine with all of this. I just didn’t expect it and I wish I had another way around it. I don’t though and it’s okay.

Dinner tonight is salmon and it’s delicious. Given all of the grief I used to give my mother when she tried to give us fish for dinner, she would be shocked that I am loving a nice piece of fish tonight. Who even am I?

Fish is Good? What?

It’s so weird. My whole life I hated fish. My mother would cook fish for dinner and I’d feel like I was in hell. Gross.

A few years ago Jen wanted to try making fish for dinner and I was terrified. Fortunately my wife is some kind of culinary genius and she made a dish that I liked. I think it was cod… or haddock… or something like that. Something white. It was good enough that we both wanted to try a second time.

Jen’s choice for the second fishdish was salmon. Salmon actually looks good, right? You see some fresh salmon in the market and you’re like, dude that looks good. We both like salmon sashimi, so why not try cooking it? Turns out it didn’t live up to the hype. We both thought it was okay but it wasn’t nearly as good as the cod/haddock/whatever it was.

Now we are in post-gastric bypass land. At one of the diet classes they sang the praises of white fish because it has a ton of protein. Protein is currently my one and only nutritional goal. We had some the other night and it was good, and I’ve been eating tons of canned tuna. My fisherman grandfather would be pleased by the amount of fish I’ve been eating.

But salmon… at the store last night we were looking at the fish counter and we both thought that maybe salmon deserved another try. If it was meh then so be it. We could say we gave it a chance and can then move on with our lives. If it turned out good though… well, that’d be something else entirely.

Jen cooked some salmon in the air fryer tonight. I had 2.5 ounces. Remember up above when I said my wife was some kind of culinary genius? The dinner she made tonight was so good. We both thought so. It was fantastic. It was delightful.

The guy who grew up loathing fish now somehow really likes fish. All different kinds. Holy mackerel!

Fish

I mentioned last week that I had some salmon and it didn’t kill me. Well the fish experiments continue.

Last night we had haddock. Much to my surprise, it was pretty good. Not my favorite thing ever, but pretty good. Today we had swordfish. Now I had always heard that swordfish was a good choice for people who don’t like fish because it doesn’t taste fishy.

How was it?

It was really fishy. Of the three fish we’ve had in the last eight days, it was by far my least favorite. Of course the kids loved it like crazy.
