Our Fourth Anniversary

Four years ago today, these two clowns got married!

All kidding aside, I married the love of my life four years ago today. My best friend and I have been through the best ride ever, and I could not be happier.

I love you, Jennifer!

Two More Songs

I was hoping there would be three songs to post tonight, but I’m way too tired so you’ll have to settle for two.

These were both started in 2007 when I first tried and failed the RPM challenge. This makes five of those seven songs that have finally been finished. The lyrics to the first one are about nothing, hence the song title. I was trying to make a point in the lyrics to the second song, but I can’t figure out what that point was. Typical.

These two files will eventually be deleted, someday, when I finish recording all of the songs that I consider to be part of my leftover songs project. Once they are all done I’ll move the whole thing over to bandcamp. But I’ll put these here for now.

The Old Days

That wouldn’t have happened in my day. Back in the 80s we little league umpires took our jobs seriously. Calling a game was a sacred trust.

We never would have given a kid four strikes the way this ump gave four strikes to my step son.

And we used to walk five miles each way, up hill, in five feet of snow.

We could use a clicker and we liked it!

What I Learned Today

Here are a couple of little things that I learned about myself today.

From about 6:30am through about 1:30pm I pretended I was a musician.  I took the four remaining unfinished songs from my 2007 RPM failure and worked them over good.  Three of the songs had rhythm guitar/bass/drums finished.  The one remaining only had drums and bass finished.

So what did I get done today?  Wrote and recorded lyrics and melodies for all four, finished the one missing rhythm guitar part, and recorded the lead guitar on three of the four songs.

So you’re still wondering what it was I learned about myself today, right?  Well here goes.

I learned that for me, practice is wicked important.  I am way out of practice both as a guitar player and a singer.  It shows most clearly in my pathetic sense of rhythm.  My timing has been just the tiniest bit off all day long.  At a casual listen it sounds almost all right, but when I am paying attention everything just feels sloppy.  It’s… off.

I’ve always had a problem keeping myself in phase, as it were, but lack of practice seriously exacerbates the issue.  (Yes, I just used exacerbates in a sentence that wasn’t referring to Shaun of the Dead.  100 points for me!)

I also re-learned just how important calluses are when playing guitar.  I needed about 10000000 takes to get the leads right on one of these terrible songs today and I now have the searing agony in my finger tips to prove it.  The blisters are forming.

The good news is, I am close to having four (4) more songs finished.  Bad timing and crappy soloing aside, that’s not bad for a random Tuesday, eh?

One Free Day

I had a day’s worth of comp time banked last week when my boss suggested I use it or lose it. When do I need to use it by? Asks me. End of the month says he. Well, far be it from me to turn down a four day weekend, I booked the day after Memorial Day. Aka, tomorrow.

Now what? My beloved will be at work, the kids will be at school. How should I spend the day? I was reserving it for possible yard work if it rained all weekend, but I got the yard work done yesterday. I am free and clear tomorrow.

I have three ideas. I just need to pick one.

Obviously idea #1 is to flake the day away. Watch some tube, a movie or whatever. That’s probably what I’ll do, but I’d like to at least think about doing something more involved.

Idea #2 is music. I’ve got a lot of in progress recordings that could be polished off over the course of a full business day. That would be nerd-hobby productive, and therefore acceptable to my nerd brain.

Idea #3 is to have a photo day. Take the camera somewhere and take a pile of new pictures to feed the Flickr. But where? Boston is the obvious place. Harvard Square in Cambridge? Maybe some places near home like the Spicket or Merrimack rivers? I don’t know. It sounds like a good idea.

Which do you suggest, oh Internet?

Flowers for the Sick Girl

My wife has been sick all weekend. She has barely been able to get out of bed, the poor thing.

Twice today I had to go out and run errands. Twice today I picked up some flowers to cheer her up.

Did I overdo it?

It’s Alive!

Untitled

It’s alive! The grill has been brought back from the dead! Now we may honor the sacrifices made my so many of our fellow Americans by celebrating this day with a cook out and some hamburgers and hot dogs. Without the men and women who serve our country, we wouldn’t be able to have a day like today.

Thank you all!
