Huge Daddy Long Legs
My beloved wife and I got home at the same time. She walked into the kitchen and pointed at something with an alarmed look on her face. I didn’t see it at first, but when I did.
Spread out on our paper towel roll was the biggest, baddest, meanest daddy long legs the world has ever seen. This sucker was HUGE!
The garbage disposal had it’s work cut out for it.
It was up to the challenge though.

Friday the 13th and the Red Sox
When I woke up on Thursday September 12, 2013 the Boston Red Sox were in first place in the American League East Division with a magic number of eight.
When I woke up on Friday September 13, 2013 the Boston Red Sox were still in first place in the American League East Division with a magic number of eight.
Why is it that yesterday that magic number seemed tiny and all but a given (not actually a given, this is Boston after all), but today it seems massive. Eight seems gigantic, like the black hole at the center of the Milky Way gigantic. Like unimaginably vast and infinite.
That, dear Internet, is the perfect description of what it means to be a Boston sports fan. Yesterday morning they were coming off a win and all was right with the world. Today they are coming off a loss and it’s nothing but doom and gloom and horror and terror. Sure, the fact that it’s Friday the 13th and I live in a house with a black cat might be having some influence on my thinking today, but mostly it’s just a typical Boston sports fan kinda thing.
Go Red Sox. Please.
Merrimack River Pics
I took my camera with me when I dropped the kids off this morning. I had a couple of hours before I had to punch into work, so I went to a little park along the Merrimack river so that I could play with some more 30 second exposure pics. There wasn’t much to work with as I don’t have a real tripod (the thing I have is only about 18 inches tall or so) and the river bank sloped down pretty severely on the few places that were clear of brush enough to get a pic through. There was also a lot of dog shit everywhere, sad to say. There was one spot with a set of wooden steps that formed a sort of boat launch. I sat my fat ass there (after checking to make sure it was feces free) and snapped off four pics. That’s it. I wasn’t really feeling it today.
Here they are…
Nothing special. It probably would have looked better if the sky weren’t clouded over. Maybe partly cloudy, blue sky with big puffy white clouds. Maybe it would have looked better with something like that reflecting off the river. Who knows. Maybe I’ll get a real tripod and try again. Who knows.
Scariest Thing Ever
I took my camera with me this morning when I dropped off the kids. I wanted to go to a spot on the Merrimack River and take a few long exposures. More on that later.
When I got home I had a little bag of trash in the car. I took it over to the side of the garage where the trash barrels currently live. I saw the scariest thing in the universe. It pretty much guarantees that no one in my family is ever going to go outside again.
It is HUGE!
It’s just hanging there, seemingly in mid-air. I don’t know how I’m going to kill it. Maybe I should cave in on all of my personal convictions and go buy a gun. I think that might do the trick… maybe.
I’m not afraid of spiders, but I sure did a double take when I saw this monster.
Eight
After careful calculations I have deduced that the Red Sox magic number is now down to eight. It was 10 yesterday, and the Sox beat the Rays last night on a freakin pinch hit grand slam in the 10th by Mike Carp. So 10 minus one for the Sox win, minus one for the Rays loss equals eight. I might need a calculator to double check that equation. It’s been a while since I did any Algebra.
I didn’t listen to the game last night but I had the MLB app’s gamecast on for most of it. I saw Tampa tie it in the eighth, I believe it was, and shut it off so I could try and sleep (didn’t work) after the Sox failed to score in the ninth.
When I checked the score this morning… Pinch grand slam in the 10th. It’s like a cliche of an elementary school kid’s baseball daydream. I need to check if it was a full count too.
Typical Red Sox win. Close game, lose a lead late, win in sports center highlight show worthy dramatic fashion. This team is really fun to watch.
Go Red Sox!
Nothing, as Usual
I’ve got nothing going on tonight. I had another painfully long drive to work this morning, followed by another surprisingly fast drive home. Weird.
I had a breakthrough on a project I’ve been working on forever and that is good. The Red Sox magic number is 10 and they have the lead against the team trailing them, Tampa Bay, at this very moment and that is good too. Might the magic number be 8 before I fall asleep tonight?
There is one thing though that is better than all other good things.
After a long, painful wait, my step daughter’s braces came off! That in itself is awesome news, but ever better than that…
SHE CAN EAT POPCORN AGAIN!
All hail her favorite food!
Buchholz
Hey Red Sox fans, are you following the game tonight? Clay Buchholz is finally back, and he just mowed down the Rays 1-2-3 in the first inning.
That pretty much guarantees us a World Series, right?
Right?
Go Red Sox!
iPhone 5S
The Apple iPhone event is happening right now. They are unveiling the new iPhone 5S and the new, cheaper iPhone 5C. The 5C seems to be a slightly souped up 5 in a plastic case.
The 5S has a 64 bit processor, which is cool. The camera has been upgraded again and now will include a burst mode. When I use a real camera, be it the D90 or the point and shoot, I always keep it in burst mode. So if I upgrade to a 5S you can expect EVEN MORE PICTURES!!! >insert maniacal laugh here<
The 5S also has a finger print scanner built into the home button. No more passcodes. No more entering passwords for purchases. Also, no more slide to unlock. I think I'll miss that. It's a quaint little tidbit.
iOS7 comes out on 9/18 and it's free. I am not really looking forward to the new look and feel. It looks cheesy, like what a five year old would design. Maybe I'll like it once I see it up close. Who knows.
The Apple event is still going, and the said there is another hardware upgrade on the agenda, but I might have to end my lunch break before they do. Hold on a second…
Maybe not. The iPhone presentation is over. Were they calling leather phone cases a hardware upgrade? I don't know.
They also added a new chip that can be used for motion tracking, as in fitness apps. Being a fat sloth, that doesn't interest me all that much. Maybe if I start working out again, but not today.
I'm still following the CNET.com live blog. Just being patient, waiting for that last big reveal…
And the big reveal is… Elvis Costello. Not quite what I was hoping for, but what can you do.
Back to work, fat boy!
