Why This Time of Year Sucks

Want to know why this time of year sucks? Because this is what the sky looked like when I left for work this morning:

Untitled

Dark. Very dark. The only light in the sky was the moon (and the stars, and the street lights, and the car’s headlights, but you get the idea).

This time of year double sucks because the sky will look pretty much the same when I get home from work too.

From the Highest High to the Lowest Low

Back in 2002, all those years ago, Rush recorded a song called “Ghost Rider”. In it Geddy Lee sings the Neil Peart penned line, “From the lowest low to the highest high.” That is exactly the opposite of what Red Sox fans are feeling.

For Red Sox fans it’s from the highest high to the lowest low.

We won game one and the universe was ours to command. All of the secrets of creation were in the palm of our hand. Then we lost game two and civilization has collapsed. We are crushed by a depression so profound that it’s as though heaven was in our grasp and then was yanked (yankee’d) away from us.

When the Cardinals had their flash of playing like a little league team in game one we all thought, they can’t be that bad, they’ll not puke all over themselves (figuratively) again. Now that the Red Sox have had their little league moment too, we have to think the same thing. Peavy pitches tomorrow. He was pretty bad against the Tigers. He needs to be the pitcher he was when he first came to Boston. Those first few starts were beautiful. We need more like that. As for game four… who knows. Will Buchholtz be able to go? Is the team’s training staff supervising his sleep behavior to make sure he doesn’t hurt himself again?

Based on the pitching match ups, games three and four are winnable for the Red Sox. If Peavy and whoever goes in game four can pitch a decent game and keep the Cardinals offense at least down to Earth, the Red Sox should be able to handle the St Louis starters. I am still cautiously optimistic, I’m just not in a state of elation the way I was 24 hours ago. The worst part is that we have to wait until tomorrow night for game three.

The series is tied at one game a piece. The Red Sox have plenty of time to recover from the bad news bears that was the seventh inning last night. Just forget it ever happened and win yourselves the best of five series that remains.

Go Red Sox!

Very Short OS X Mavericks Review

I updated both of my Apple computers to OS X Mavericks. I haven’t really done much on the iMac since upgrading. I’ve been using the MacBook Pro while watching the two World Series games. I have two things to note about Mavericks:

1. The Good. I used to get about two hours, maybe a little less, worth of battery time. Since upgrading, I’ve gone from 99% down to 93% in about 30 minutes. That seems like a really good start as far as the battery life improvements go. Granted, I haven’t done anything more involved than posting to Twitter, reading Facebook, and posting this update to WordPress. Nothing major, but still a good start.

2. The Bad. I don’t know if this is related or not, but the time to boot up is insane. It’s like Windows bad. Really bad. I didn’t time it, but it took a seriously long time. I was very disappointed.

That’s all I have for a Mavericks review. I hope it helps you, loyal readers.

And in case you were wondering, David Ortiz just hit a two run home run to give the Red Sox the lead in the sixth inning of game two.

Go Red Sox!

Merrimack River this Morning – 30 Second Exposures

I can’t take the damn camera out of the damn bag without screwing the damn filter onto the damn lens and opening the damn shutter for 30 damn seconds.

The water seemed a little choppy as I was setting up, but it doesn’t seem much different. I mean, it’s nice and glassy and smooth and all, but it’s not a huge dramatic difference.

The wind did interesting things with the branches in the foreground, but that’s not really the goal. And it’s sort of distracting.

The water is pretty cool here, but I lost the shore to the shadow.

There was a ton of traffic on the bridge, all of which was blurred into oblivion. Sweet.

And with this we end the forth post I milked out of about 45 minutes of wandering around town. Sweet.
