…pation.
Is it June 23rd and/or June 29th yet?
In all the excitement over the announcement of Rush tour dates yesterday I totally missed the announcement of ticket pre-sales starting today! I got word in time though.
Did I get tickets to the Boston show? Yes.
Did I get tickets to the New York show? Yes.
Did I get good seats to either show? Well….
Eh, not so good. Okay. Not great. We’re in the door though, that’s all that really matters. I’ve had much worse seats, once in the back row at Mohegan Sun and once in the back row at SPAC, and still had my entire head rocked clean off.
We’re going to see Rush again! Let’s celebrate!
Christmas!
New Years!
Easter!
Birthday!
All rolled into one! That’s what today feels like, for Rush has announced new tour dates for 2015! It is Celebration Day! They are touring to celebrate their 40th anniversary even though this summer marks 41 years. Well… as long as they can still count to 7 and play Cygnus X-1 I will forgive their math error.

Opening night is my birthday. Too bad it’s in Tulsa, otherwise I’d say we should join the throngs of similarly obsessed fans and get ourselves there. But… it’s Tulsa. $5.00 says they did that on purpose. (sorry Oklahoma, said the proud Masshole)
Key dates:
June 23rd in Boston. Obviously.
June 29 in New York. We’ve seen them at Madison Square Garden twice. How about Garden Grady #3?
June 17 and 19 in Toronto. I’ve always wanted to see them do a home town show.
July 25 in Las Vegas. I’ve always wanted to go to Las Vegas. Why not go for Rush?
August 1 in Los Angeles. They aren’t playing in San Diego. L.A. is as close as they get. Is it close enough? Yes!
I don’t drink. Ever. I just don’t. There’s no reason for it outside of never having come across an alcoholic beverage that actually tastes good to me. I’m also kind of proud that I’ve never been under the influence, in a weird anti-social sort of way.
This stuff though…
This stuff I’ll at least try. It will probably make me want to vomit, but I’ll give it a try. It comes highly recommended by Neil Peart. Obsessed Rush fans will understand why.
As a guitar player who is also a prog rock fan and an obsessed Rush fanatic, I have always wanted to get my hands on one of the Omega guitar stands Alex Lifeson uses on stage. You know, the stand that he sits his acoustic guitar on to so he cam play it without taking off his electric? Here’s a really bad pic of it, taken from the back row…

and here is a really bad pic of it with that lute thingie he played on “Workin’ Them Angels”…

And here’s another really bad pic of him actually playing the lute thingie while still wearing his Les Paul…

You can see why such a thing is beyond awesome for a nerdy prog loving guitar player, right? It allows you to play both electric and acoustic guitars on the same song without having to stop playing to take one off and put the other one on. It’s a pretty ingenious device.
I swear I used to see ads for them in guitar magazines back in the 80’s. Omega Stands. I never considered buying one then because I never had any money. I also never owned a decent acoustic guitar. When I started playing in a cover band back in 2003 I started poking around the internet looking for them but any search for Omega Stand just brought up pictures of Alex Lifeson playing “Closer to the Heart” or “The Trees”. I never had any luck.
Until today!
I found one for sale on sweetwater.com, a site I have to admit never having looked at before. It’s a K&M Performer Walk Up Guitar Stand – Acoustic and if it didn’t cost an amazing $300 I’d be pulling out my credit card and ordering one right now. I won’t though, because I would probably never ever use it. Even though I am playing in a band again, it would still be more trouble than it’s worth. It would just be a fanboy expense that would be better to be used for other things. Like repairs.
Both of my Gibson guitars need work. The pick up switch on the Les Paul Custom can’t select the neck pickup. It can do bridge, it can do both, but it can’t do neck. Also, the tone pot for the neck pick up doesn’t work. There are similar problems with the ES-335 Pro. The pickup switch works in all three positions, but there is something funky with the neck pick up. Either a wire is lose or there is so much dust that the contact is being blocked. There’s also lose/dirty connections for the tone pots as well. The big problem with the 335 is that the neck is slowly pulling off of the body. Either it broke off once before and wasn’t pushed in all the way when it was glued back on, or the glue is slowly, slowly, slowly giving up the fight. The neck broke off of my Les Paul once too, back in ’98 I think. That was terrifying. Even the repair guy I brought it to was afraid to work on it. It took him forever, but eventually he fixed it, and did a really good job too. It’s like new.
It turns out that the little guitar shop near my house does repairs. I was optimistic at first until I read their website. It says they do major and minor repairs. That’s good. It lists off some of the things they do. Wiring is on the list, which is good. Broken necks are not on the list, which is bad. The disturbing thing is that the list includes string replacement. Yeah. Maybe I won’t go to them.
File this under “Greatest Thing Ever”.
Rush featuring original drummer John Rutsey, the 1974 performance of “I’ve Been Runnin’” at Laura Secord Secondary School in St. Catharines, Ontario.
Check it out, at the 3:55 mark you can see Neville Longbottom sitting in the crowd. How awesome is that??
I was about three years old when this was recorded. I had plaid pants, just like those kids did.
Welcome to Cellar Reclamation Project Phase Two: The Dumpster Strikes Back!
The plan for this weekend is to toss every single thing in the cellar and storage that hasn’t been touched since we moved in. It’s been about 3.5 years. It’s time.
The question is, if I start at track one of my iPod’s Rush Studio Albums playlist, how far will I get before I keel over? I’m through the first single and the first album. Track one of Fly By Night just started. I’m not dead yet.
I bet the internet is going to run a pool. Guess the album and track. Closest without going over wins.
My blu ray copy of the Clockwork Angels Tour doesn’t play on our Playstation 3. It plays on the blu ray player downstairs, but it fails miserably on the PS3.
I guess we’ll go with R30 on blu ray instead. The PS3 still likes that one.
The Rush Clockwork Angels Tour video comes out on DVD and Blu-ray tomorrow. I may not be able to get it right away, but I expect to have one by the weekend.
They are running the video in select movie theaters tonight. Mike the bass player got me a ticket. He got one for my beloved too, but she is not feeling up to it.
It won’t be fun without her, and it will never be as cool as sitting/standing in the 9th row anyway.
