Happy birthday, buddy!
Today, February 4th, is a very interesting day. There are many important birthdays.
My step son turns 11 today. He was four when he and his sister decided that I was good enough for their Mom. I will forever be grateful to them for that kindness. On the day I first met him, Jen warned me that he would be super shy and would probably hide from me. I was ready for that. Then when we all met up outside of the Chuck-E-Cheese’s in Framingham, he strode right up to me without any hesitation and asked me if I’d like to see something he did in school that day. The little man liked me from the word go. I have no clue how I got to be so lucky. Seven years later and he still doesn’t mind me hanging around.
My nephew turns three today. I recently got my hair cut. The woman chopping my locks asked me if I had any kids, and if so did they get my red hair? I told her that I was step father to the two best kids imaginable, but that I had not passed on my glorious red head. I also told her that it was okay because my sister has the same hair and her son, who turns three today… just making sure you’re paying attention… was fortunate enough to get the same color. The red hair has been passed on to the next generation!
Facebook turns 10 today. Yup. The last nail in myspace’s coffin… The Accidental Billionaire… Millions upon millions of pictures of people’s dinner (I am as guilty as the next nerd)… it all started 10 years go today.
See? I told you February 4th was an interesting day.
My brother and sister in law have two children. They were both born in October. Today is their combined birthday bash. My niece is five and my nephew is three. The party is at a gymnastics joint.
We bought them each a present. Hopefully the presents will go over well. Our fingers are crossed.
I have one complaint for those who manufacture and market toys to three year old children. You, oh toy companies, do realize that people very often gift wrap toys to give to children, right? How about you jerks start putting your toys into packages that are actually wrap-able? Is that too much to ask, you pukes faces? My three year old nephew is going to spend the rest of his life laughing at the horrible wrapping job I did on his birthday present. Why is the wrapping job so bad? Because the package you people put it in is not of a geometric shape that is physically capable of being covered in wrapping paper.
You jerks are on my list now.
It’s official. As of today my step daughter is legally allowed to ride in the front seat of the car. The last of her pre-teen years begins today. One more year before the dreaded teenage years begin.
Happy twelfth birthday to my step daughter!
We have two games at the same time today. We have a house that needs to be cleaned from top to bottom. We have a lawn mower that still won’t start damn it! We have two more baseball/softball things tomorrow at roughly the same time. We have a 12 year old’s birthday party tomorrow afternoon.
There is so much to do!!!!
Yesterday I turned 42. Today, if all goes according to plan, I will see Rush for the 22nd time. Do the math and I’ve seen them slightly better than once every two years since birth. By that (fuzzy) logic, I must have seen them in a bar in Toronto back in 1973 when John Rutsy was still in the band.
Far out!
The Bruins were kind enough to give me a nice birthday present last night, beating the Maple Leafs in overtime to take a 3-1 series lead. Many people are viewing the series as all but over, but they should not. How quickly we forget what happened in the last series the Bruins played with Tuukka Rask as their #1 goalie. I shiver at the thought of Philly in 2010.
Today’s plan is to pick up the love of my life at work after lunch and then head down to the casino for Rush. We’ll come back in time for her to go to work tomorrow. We had originally both taken both today and tomorrow as vacation days, but she got pulled into lunch meetings on both days and is now working half days. Ahh the responsibilities of command.
The following quote comes from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams…
“Good morning,” said Deep Thought at last.
“Er… good morning, O Deep Thought,” said Loonquawl nervously, “do you have… er, that is…”
“An answer for you?” interrupted Deep Thought majestically. “Yes. I have.”
The two men shivered with expectancy. Their waiting had not been in vain.
“There really is one?” breathed Phouchg.
“There really is one,” confirmed Deep Thought.
“To Everything? To the great Question of Life, the Universe and Everything?”
“Yes.”
…
“Though I don’t think,” added Deep Thought, “that you’re going to like it.”
…
“Tell us!”
“All right,” said Deep Thought. The Answer to the Great Question…”
“Yes…!”
“Of Life, the Universe and Everything…” said Deep Thought.
“Yes…!”
“Is…” said Deep Thought, and paused.
“Yes…!”
“Is…”
“Yes…!!!…?”
“Forty-two,” said Deep Thought, with infinite majesty and calm.
As of today, the number forty-two is both the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything…
And it’s my age.
Forty-two years ago today my mother was screaming to all who would listen that she really wanted some damn pain medication. Sorry mom.
All in all, I think I’d prefer it be my 22nd instead of my 42nd, but I’ll take it.
Today is a truly momentous day. Today is the day that my step son turns 10!
Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday dear best step son ever,
Happy birthday to you!
Double digits. 10 years old. Wow, it seems like yesterday he was just nine, right?
