Vacation Time

There is no end in site to the working from home.  There is no end in site to the social distance.  Even when the end comes, will we be willing to risk a new outbreak?  Will we be willing to venture out into the world of groups and crowds again?

Given that there is no difference, logistically, between a day at work and a day at home, and because there are no other alternatives to those two states of being, what good would taking a vacation day be?

The answer is, probably… none.  It wouldn’t be any good at all.  It would be a waste.

I just put in for a vacation day on my birthday though.  I mean, fuck it.  Why not?

Night Off

This week is my turn to stay with my mother while my father does his volunteer work at his church.  I go there straight from work and hang out until he comes home, usually around 10:15-10:30 or so.

He called me today around lunch time.

He’s taking the week off.

That means I am taking the week off.

That means I can go home after work and spend the evening with my wife, celebrating her birthday!  WOOHOO!

Unless Jen made plans for after work, which means I will wait patiently for her to come home so I can wish her a happy birthday again.

Happy Birthday

Today is February 7th.  That means it is my beloved Jennifer’s birthday!  Join me in wishing the love of my life a happy birthday!

Unfortunately we have a tough schedule tonight so we’ll have to do our celebrating tomorrow.  That’s okay, I think we can celebrate her birthday all weekend!  How does that sound, Jen?

I love you more today than I’ve ever loved you before, and I have loved you a LOT before.  You are the best thing that has ever happened to me and I am eternally grateful that you found me.

Happy birthday, Jen, and here’s to many more.

Happy Birthday, Mom

We celebrated my mother’s 75th birthday today.  Everyone wish her a happy birthday!

My Aunt brought a couple of old pictures with her.  There is a red head in this one who is the spitting image of my nephew…

Look at that handsome devil!  He and my nephew could be twins!  Who is that fine looking dude?  It’s me!  Can you believe it?  My sister’s son and I are twins, just 40 years removed.  Not sure how the logistics work there though.

Now check out this happy family snapshot…

The fine looking dude in the coat in the center of the pic is once again your humble narrator.  I’m standing on my dad’s lap.  My mother is to our right.  My sister is photo bombing on the lower right corner.  Behind me is my aunt Nancy.  I assume the guy whose face is blocked is Uncle Tom.  The other happy couple is the really important part of this picture.  They are Nana and Papa.  My mother’s parents.

I was at Middlesex in my late 20’s when my grandmother passed away.  I was fortunate enough to have such a stellar person in my life for a very long time.  My grandfather however passed away in 1972.  I was only a year old.  Obviously I have no memories of him, but I knew that I had met him at least.  I always had that.

Now thanks to this picture I have proof.  Aunt Nancy brought this today to show how much my nephew resembles me.  I don’t think she realized that it would mean so much to me for another reason.  I’m very thankful she brought it.  It’s got to be one of, if not the, only picture of me and my Papa.

Two Important Dates

This week has two important dates for our family. First, yesterday was my step daughter’s birthday! I was supposed to mention it here on the actual day, but many many meetings at work distracted me and I missed it. Sorry about that. But, you can still all wish her a happy belated birthday, am I right?

The second important day is today. Seven years ago today I popped the question to my beloved bride Jen. What a day that was. Unfortunately the ring I gave her seven years ago has been damaged. She thinks I’m mad at her because of that, but no. Not even a tiny bit. I’m disapointed that we seem to have bought a lemon that day at Hanoush jewelers in Salem, but otherwise I’m not upset at all. If we can’t fix the ring we will have to replace it. All I ask is that the diamond be re-used in some way. If we can get it onto a new ring then that’s excellent. If not, can we set it into something else? It’s just a symbol or course. The love that it represents will continue to be strong without the symbol. It’d just be nice to be able to keep it around.

So happy birthday to my step daughter, who still has some aging to do before I’ll mention her by name on this here bloggie, and happy proposalversary to the love of my life!

This Day in History

In the wee hours of the morning 37 years ago today, my father woke up little six year old me and my nine year old sister to give us some news. Mom had the baby. We had a little brother and his name was John.

That’s nice, we said. Then we rolled over and went back to sleep.

No offense, John.

Happy 37th birthday to my baby brother! Everyone wish him a good one.

Note: I don’t actually remember how we reacted. Logic dictates it was probably sleepily. I don’t think we got out of bed. I think we waited until the sun came up to go and meet the new addition to the family.

Today is a Milestone Day

Today marks a very important milestone for my family.

We spent the whole weekend celebrating it, but today is the day it becomes official.

My step daughter is a teenager. Today is her 13th birthday.

Let’s all sing Happy Birthday!

Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday dear >name redacted due to security agreement<
Happy birthday to you!

She was six when I first met her. She has grown up so much in that time. I am very proud of everything she’s accomplished so far, and I can’t wait to see what she has in store for her in the future.

Forty-Three

Birthdays suck.

Let me rephrase that… once you reach a certain age, let’s say 28 or so, birthdays stop being fun things to look forward to. Birthdays start to suck.

Yesterday was my 43rd birthday. For the most part yesterday sucked. All day at work, every time I looked at my desk I saw my little Bruins calendar with the date May 8 staring up at me. When I looked at my phone the big 8 on the calendar app mocked me. Man, I was depressed. Birthdays suck.

After work, I picked my step daughter up at softball while my beloved wife picked up my step son at karate. Once we were all home for the night they brought out a birthday cake and the each gave me a birthday card. Okay… birthday’s don’t always suck. Maybe they suck in general, but when the people you love are showing that they love you back it stops sucking for a while.

I also got phone calls from my sister and brother. I was dealing with heavy traffic and trying to find a softball field I’d never been to before so I didn’t notice the phone ringing. Sorry about that. I had two voicemails. One was my nephew and niece singing happy birthday. They wished me a happy birthday, and they hoped I had a lot of cake. I did! The other was my two nephews singing happy birthday. They wanted to know if we went out for a birthday dinner. We did not, but maybe the Missus and I can sneak one in over the weekend? They also wanted to know if I had any balloons. Again, I did not, but if I did it would have made my birthday even better!

Thanks to everyone for making my suck of a birthday less sucky.
