Gambling Man
I sure hope Jenny wasn’t counting on that $40 for retirement or anything. The slot machines defeated me.
Rush – Clockwork Angels Tour – Tonight!
Show Time
Yesterday I turned 42. Today, if all goes according to plan, I will see Rush for the 22nd time. Do the math and I’ve seen them slightly better than once every two years since birth. By that (fuzzy) logic, I must have seen them in a bar in Toronto back in 1973 when John Rutsy was still in the band.
Far out!
The Bruins were kind enough to give me a nice birthday present last night, beating the Maple Leafs in overtime to take a 3-1 series lead. Many people are viewing the series as all but over, but they should not. How quickly we forget what happened in the last series the Bruins played with Tuukka Rask as their #1 goalie. I shiver at the thought of Philly in 2010.
Today’s plan is to pick up the love of my life at work after lunch and then head down to the casino for Rush. We’ll come back in time for her to go to work tomorrow. We had originally both taken both today and tomorrow as vacation days, but she got pulled into lunch meetings on both days and is now working half days. Ahh the responsibilities of command.
Overtime
I hate overtime in the NHL playoffs. Is there anything more stressful, sports wise? Tonight the Leafs lead the Bruins 2-0 after one. After two they were tied at three. It stayed that way through the third. Now we wait for overtime and the inevitable heart attacks.
Go Bruins. Win the damn game on my damn birthday.
Forty-Two
The following quote comes from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams…
“Good morning,” said Deep Thought at last.
“Er… good morning, O Deep Thought,” said Loonquawl nervously, “do you have… er, that is…”
“An answer for you?” interrupted Deep Thought majestically. “Yes. I have.”
The two men shivered with expectancy. Their waiting had not been in vain.
“There really is one?” breathed Phouchg.
“There really is one,” confirmed Deep Thought.
“To Everything? To the great Question of Life, the Universe and Everything?”
“Yes.”
…
“Though I don’t think,” added Deep Thought, “that you’re going to like it.”
…
“Tell us!”
“All right,” said Deep Thought. The Answer to the Great Question…”
“Yes…!”
“Of Life, the Universe and Everything…” said Deep Thought.
“Yes…!”
“Is…” said Deep Thought, and paused.
“Yes…!”
“Is…”
“Yes…!!!…?”
“Forty-two,” said Deep Thought, with infinite majesty and calm.
As of today, the number forty-two is both the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything…
And it’s my age.
Forty-two years ago today my mother was screaming to all who would listen that she really wanted some damn pain medication. Sorry mom.
All in all, I think I’d prefer it be my 22nd instead of my 42nd, but I’ll take it.
Day After Tomorrow
Bruins vs Leafs
The series between the Bruins and the Maple Leafs is sort of following the Boston tradition as far as confidence vs panic is concerned. The Bruins took game one pretty easily. Fans started planning the Stanley Cup victory parade. In game two, the Maple Leafs kicked our sorry asses. Boston fans responded by wandering out onto the Tobin bridge, prepared to hurl themselves off. Last night the Bruins took game three and again the Cup is ours, guaranteed.
But they sure played like crap in the third period, didn’t they?
