So I’ve been playing the guitar. You can tell because my fingers are falling off.

Promotion
I got promoted today. The downside is that I lose my second telecommute day. I’m back to driving in on Mondays again.
The upside is… is… Is there an upside? I’ll let you know when I figure it out.
Weather
I just looked at the weather channel’s 10 day forecast. Five of the 10 days predict snow.
Urgh.
Breakfast for Dinner, Postscript
So that was really weird.
My wife called me from the road as she was driving home from work. She asked me a controversial question. She asked if I wanted to go some place to have breakfast for dinner. I said sure, that would be great. She had a place in mind but it was closed. We went back and forth over a few places and ended up at Denny’s.
I have a bad history with Denny’s, but most of that was out of state. The one we went to is one I used to go to every now and then. It’s been ages upon ages though.
We got there at about 6:10 and had to wait a while before we were seated. They were clearly short handed. When we were at our table there were three groups. To my right was a couple who had not been served yet. To my left was a family who had been served, but clearly something was out of whack. The one waiter was really sucking up to them. I got the impression that the house had screwed something up on them.
We placed our order and waited. After half an hour I was getting annoyed. My beloved and I were both starving and I wanted our food to come out. A short time later we learned why there was a delay. There was some yelling coming from the kitchen. Someone was having a pretty heated argument. At this point I realized that the couple to my right still hadn’t been served either. When the waiter came out his was really flustered. One of them asked if he was okay and he said his cook just quit.
His cook just quit?
His cook just quit.
The waiter came out to talk to the family again. Apparently he had messed up their order a second time. They ordered dessert and the kitchen was out of something. As weird as it was, it was starting to get funny. The poor waiter was a mess, but we were starting to get a little giggly. We were trying to decide if we should walk out, pay for our drinks (the only thing that had been brought to us) and leave, or pay for the whole order and leave.
During all of this, the recently unemployed cook was still there. He was hanging out in the waiting area talking to another member of the staff. Okay, it was time to leave. Even if they brought us our food we wouldn’t want to eat it. The vibe was just too weird. So we went to the register and said we were leaving but wanted to pay for our order. The now ex-cook gives us, “No, you don’t have to pay for your food.”
Like… dude… of course you’re going to tell us we don’t have to pay! You don’t work there any more!
That’s the funniest part about this whole weird, goofy experience. The ex-cook telling us we don’t have to pay. We paid for the whole order and left a decent tip. The waiter was clearly having an awful day’s work, and it was not going to get better any time soon. We felt we should do right by him.
All in all, breakfast for dinner was just plain weird.
RPM Challenge – Day 24
Last night I mixed two more songs. Today I wrote lyrics and sang the vocals for three more songs. That leaves me with eight songs finished, and six songs that only require lead guitar before mixing. I’ve got four days left. I can still pull off all 14 songs.
The first of the two finished songs is this year’s 12-bar blues. The lyrics are based on a little bit of family history. My grandfather was a fisherman. On one trip out to sea his boat sank. He floated around on a lifeboat for a while before being picked up by a passing ship. The whole time he was missing no one let my grandmother know. She was kept away from newspapers and radios. When my grandfather finally got to shore in New York he called her to say that he was safe and she had no idea what he was talking about.

http://alonetone.com/robertjames1971/tracks/ufo.mp3%20I don’t have anything else ready to mix at this point. I am going to try and pick off a guitar solo tomorrow before work. Tonight though, is all about last night’s episode of The Walking Dead.

RPM Challenge – Day 23
I am about to leave to bring my step daughter to softball practice. 90 minutes later I will pick her up. The plan? Drop her off, find a parking spot as far away from civilization as humanly possible, crack out the MacBook and record at least two songs worth of vocals.
Think I can do it? I did it Thursday night when I dropped the kids off for karate, and I actually wrote the basics for songs #10 and 11 in the same parking lot two weeks ago.
Wish me luck!
RPM Challenge – Day 22 Again
I mixed two songs tonight. The first of the two is just a terrible song that I really hope I’ll be able to drop. I need lyrics for at least one more song in order to do that. I think I really must get at least one more done. This song just sucks.
http://alonetone.com/robertjames1971/tracks/forced.mp3%20The other song is okay, but it is really similar to another song that I’ve already finished. Big chunks of both songs were actually written in one sitting. That might explain it. Ya think?
http://alonetone.com/robertjames1971/tracks/not-if-i-see-you-first.mp3%20I hope to be able to record more vocals tomorrow. I’ve got two more ready to go. I’ve got another song ready to mix, and another song that only needs leads. It would be nice if I could get through all of them tomorrow. Then I would have telecommuting on Monday and Thursday to finish up any additional vocals I might get to before the deadline. The goal is still to record 14 songs. It’s getting near the end, and I have a lot left to do.
Hockey Sadness
Team USA lost the bronze medal game today to Finland, 5-0. I didn’t see the game. We were at IKEA shopping for desks for the kids. Given the final score, I am kinda glad I didn’t see it. At the same time, not having actually seen the game does not alter the depth of my pain.
We were down to the final four teams, and there are three medals… and we didn’t get a medal. Oh the hockey pain! Oh the hockey suffering!
Having said that, prior to the tournament’s start, I was figuring they would finish fourth. So I guess I can’t be too upset.
I am though. Upset. I am upset.
You had a nice run, team USA. Thanks for the fun.
