Cartoons

Daily writing prompt
What’s your favorite cartoon?

This is another unanswerable question. There are too many favorites to narrow it down to one. I think it is time for a list, and it is probably going to be on the long side…

  • Current shows
    • Rick and Morty (though last week’s episode was the worst they’ve ever made)
    • Star Wars: The Bad Batch
    • Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi
    • South Park
    • Family Guy
    • Bob’s Burgers
  • Shows that aren’t running anymore
    • Star Wars: The Clone Wars
    • Star Wars: Rebels
    • Bugs Bunny, especially Loony Toons
    • The Super Friends
    • Scooby Doo
    • Star Blazers
    • The old Spiderman show, the one with the famous theme song
    • The Flintstones
    • The Jetsons
  • Shows my step kids watched when they were little that were good enough (ie adult enough) that I started loving them too
    • Gravity Falls
    • Phineas and Ferb
    • The Mighty B!
    • Wander Over Yonder

There are at least 100 more, but this will do for now. Here’s hoping this Sunday’s episode of Rick and Morty is better than last week’s suck burger.

ADDENDUM: How did I leave Futurama and Archer off the list? What is wrong with me?

Are Bass Players Human Too?

I just watched the first episode of Geddy Lee’s TV show, called Geddy Lee Asks: Are Bass Players Human Too?

I freakin’ loved it!

It was about 20 minutes of Geddy and Les Claypool of Primus just hanging out. The two of them are just plain goofy and it was kinda delightful.

I’ll admit that when Geddy was reading from a script he didn’t sound particularly… professional. It’s clear that reading copy is not something that he generally does. When he and Claypool were just talking to each other it felt natural and… I’ll say it again, delightfully goofy.

There are three episodes left. One is the new guy in Metallica, one is (I think) a former member of Hole, and the third is some guy who used to be in some band called Nirvana or something.

I’m looking forward to all of them. I now need to know, are bass players human too?

November’s End

I can’t believe it’s here, but we’re just over three hours away from December. Another year, another winter, another season of me wishing it were summer again. Ugh. It was cold enough in the cellar today during the work day that I turned on the little space heater for the first time. Again… ugh.

My Star Trek Deep Space 9 rewatch has reached the first mirror universe episode. The first one is a classic. All of the 10000 that followed, including the ones in Discovery demonstrate the law of diminishing returns. They just get dumber and more boring as they go. Again, again… ugh.

Side note, I am watching DS9 on the Paramount app on my AppleTV. It’s an ad-supported plan. It’s been so long since I’ve watched commercial television that I forgot the wonder of the mute button. Thankfully the AppleTV remote has one. Every time a commercial starts, I hit mute and… sigh of relief.

Change of subject, the Bruins have lost three straight games. Tonight they look to end the losing streak in a match up with the San Jose Sharks. The Sharks are pitiful this season. This is just what we need. We are up 2-0 after two periods. Again, just what we needed.

I have had two crappy nights sleep in a row. Here’s hoping that a good DS9 episode and a Bruins win will be followed by a rare good nights sleep. Fingers crossed.

What is Wrong With Us?

Our society is broken beyond repair.

I just saw a TV commercial with the opening line, “I needed more from my anti-depressant.”

Really, what the fuck is wrong with us? We as a society are disgusting.

Deep Space 9 Podcasts

Over the weekend I got back into my rewatch of Star Trek Deep Space 9. When I paused it at the start of the ridiculous Doctor Who binge I was a few episodes into season two. Today I went looking for a rewatch podcast or two that I could listen to in conjunction with watching the episode. You know, like you do.

I found one called The 7th Rule that features Cirroc Lofton (who played Jake Sisko) and the late Aron Eisenberg (who played Nog). I am listening to their recap of an episode called Rivals (season two, episode 11, I think) and they are basically just making fun of Doctor Bashir’s outfit and it’s pretty freakin’ funny.

I just wanted to share.

Doctor Who Anniversary Episode 1/3

My step daughter and I watched the first of the three 60th anniversary episodes of Doctor Who today. I only started becoming a fan about five months ago, but I’d seen every previous episode in the most epic TV binge watch in history so this was the first time I had to actually wait for a new episode.

No spoilers as far as plot goes. It was definitely a fun watch and it fits right in with the show as it was the last time David Tennant played The Doctor. There was nothing earth shattering in it, but I enjoyed it.

One clear difference was the budget for visual effects. It has definitely been increased in a big way. It seems like they have a truck load of Disney cash to throw around and they made excellent use of it. The episode looked amazing.

I’m looking forward to next week’s second of the three anniversary special episodes. Here’s hoping the bigger budget fun continues. Enjoy.

Oh Sweet Merciful Monday, It Is Finally Over!

Fear the Walking Dead is Over! The series has completed! After eight seasons, the last five of which are the worst television ever produced, they have finally put us out of our misery!

The last two episodes aired last night. I watched them this morning while exercising and eating breakfast and good lord they were AWEFUL. I mean… Holy shit, were they terrible! I was literally laughing out loud at the majority of the “dramatic” moments. The writing was so atrocious that it was funny. Not funny in a good way, but funny in an “I can’t believe how pathetic this is, how did this garbage make it to the air” kind of way.

Who cares though, the show is over. It will never come back again. Stick a fork in it, it’s done! I am so happy for the members of the cast who are now free to work on good TV shows and movies and literally anything they want without ever having to work on this shit heap of idiocy ever again. You are free, people! You are finally and mercifully free!

I feel so relieved. I no longer have to question my sanity as I hate watch the worst show on television, purely for the sake of completeness. This once fantastic show turned into a rusting, leaking, septic tank of bad and I no longer feel compelled to watch another second.

We are all free! We are all freed from the tyranny of the terrible TV show! Rejoice! Rejoice!

Fear the Walking Exposition

I am going to talk about how awful last night’s episode of Fear the Walking Dead was… again. I don’t think I am going to spoil anything because nothing happened so there was nothing to spoil, but if you’re watching the show and haven’t seen last night’s episode you should probably stop reading.

I’ll give you a second to decide.

Okay… so… When I was in college I took a creative writing course. I had one phrase drilled into my tiny little brain: Show Don’t Tell. When you’re writing, don’t tell the readers what’s happening, show them. Describe the events as they happen, don’t just have the characters say what’s going on.

The writers of last night’s episode never took that creative writing class. Basically the entire episode is Tell Don’t Show. It’s about 40 minutes of exposition. That is inexcusable in any television situation, but here? There are only two more episodes in the entire series after last night, and they spent 40 minutes on exposition?

They also introduced new characters last night. Really. A whole new group. The story tells us that they met a major character last season… after the actor left the show and was supposed to be dead… What. The. Fuck?

Every week I say that the new episode is as bad as it could possibly get. Every week’s new episode tops the prior week in terribleness. Once again, this is the worst episode imaginable. Unforgivably bad.

Loki Finale

I just finished watching the second season finale of Loki on Disney+. No spoilers, just go and watch it. The whole season is very good.

The reason for this post though has to do with the guy who plays Loki, Tom Hiddleston. Simply put, is it time to cast him as the next James Bond, or what? I think he would be a great choice. He wouldn’t be the blunt instrument Daniel Craig was. He’d be something else, but he’d be great.

Just call me Spartacus and join my crusade. Hiddleston for Bond: 2024.

It Is Finished at Last!

I am done! It’s over! It’s finished! Oh thank the King of England, at last I am through it all!

13 seasons of NuWho, 26 seasons of Classic Who, and one made for TV movie co-starring Julia Roberts’ fairly untalented brother!

My Epic Binge Watch of All Things Doctor Who is Complete! I am Done!

Now what do I do?
