Boy Does Robbie Need a Hobby

Two band practices ago I recorded the whole thing. I used the iTalk app on my iPhone and just pointed the mic in our general vicinity. It worked well but it sounded like sludge.

Last band practice I recorded the whole thing again. This time I brought my MacBook, my USB interface, and one microphone. It worked well. It sounded pretty bad, but 100 times better than the phone.

Now how do I one up myself? Let’s see. We have three vocal mics, a guitar amp, a bass amp, and a drum kit. Also the USB interface only has two outputs. I won’t be able to record each source onto it’s own track. The best I can do is record a stereo mix. So how do I get that stereo mix? Three mics for voices, two more for the two amps, and let’s say two overhead mics on the drums. Seven microphones. What to do, what to do……

I haven’t used this puppy in four years or so. It is a dusty mess. If things come together I’ll need a lot of compressed air to get the channels clean. I just performed an experiment. I plugged Larry’s piano directly into channel one. I plugged a guitar directly into channel two. I plugged a mic into channel three. The piano panned left, the guitar panned right, and the mic straight up the middle. Now unfortunately the PA we’re using does not have channel outputs. Mr Mackie here does. So we’d have to plug the vocal mics into this, then direct out them into the PA. So to test that out I direct out’d the piano track into the little toyish Marshall amp. Next I plugged the board’s stereo outputs into the USB interface and plugged the interface into the MacBook and brought up GarageBand. I hit record and strummed with one hand, banged on the piano with the other, and gabbed into the mic.

Success.

A stereo recording in GarageBand with the guitar on one side, the piano on the other, and the mic in the middle, and the piano coming out of the little amp. Now the only thing left to do is try and clean out the channels because there was a lot of scratchy dust induced interference that needs to be eliminated. Then it’s just a matter of setting everything up and tweaking the mix to tape as we go, although that would be more of a week to week thing because I don’t plan on listening to play backs until after practice. It’ll do though. Even better, when the day comes when we buy a real power amp to use for PA, the board will already be in place and everything will be ready to go.

This is all upside, right?

I’m not alarmingly obsessed, right?

Right?

Oh did I mention though… I don’t have enough microphones to actually pull this off. To the music store we go!

B. B. King

Rest in peace B. B. King.  He was better than all who came before him, and he is better than all who come after him.  He is the definition of a genre.  The best vocalist blues will ever know.  The best guitarist blues will ever know.  A peerless, passionate performer who will never be equalled.  The world has lost a treasure.

Two Days

I managed to hold out for two days. That’s how long I was able to wait before downloading bootlegs of Friday night’s Rush show. I have tapes from two sources. Yeah. They haven’t even had a second show yet and already I have two bootlegs. I think I need therapy.

I have not listened to them yet, and I won’t until after I see the show for myself. I have also managed to not look at the setlist, even though the dimeadozen torrent pages have both listed the whole thing.

I’m not spoiler free though. I’ve heard a couple of song titles from Facebook friends who were there on Friday. I’ve also seen a number of pictures. There’s a guy on Flickr who uploaded some great shots with the tag R40Live. Check them out. They sort of spoiled one or two things for me. You see… there are photos that include two… not one, but two… double neck guitars. Knowing your Rush history narrows that down to at most two songs. One of them I’m sure had two double necks (a 6/12 for Alex and a bass/12 for Geddy), the other had at least one. I’ve seen Alex play his double neck before, but I’ve never seen Geddy play one in person.

Epic, dude. Totally, wicked Epic.

Post script… Now that I think of it, there is one song that I believe Geddy played his double neck but Alex did not play his. On one of the live records, during a guitar solo, there is a moment where you hear rhythm guitar but no bass. That’s the give away that Geddy is playing his Rick double neck. Again, I’ve never seen evidence of this, but I’ve heard it. That’s a third double neck song, but I’m still only sure of one where they both play theirs. Just one. I won’t say which song but I will say if you pop on the Exit… Stage Left video you’ll know what I’m talking about.

R40 – Opening Night

Tonight is the night. Tulsa, OK is the place. The opening night of the Rush R40 40th anniversary celebration tour! Even though this year is actually their 41st year. Who cares!

What do you think the chances are that I can pick up Jen, get to the airport, fly to Tulsa, get to the arena, scalp two tickets, and get to our seats by 7:00 local time? The chances are pretty slim, but we should do it anyway! WOOHOO!!

Just kidding.

We will be at the Boston and NYC shows. The final show of the tour is in Los Angeles. I’m trying to drop subtle hints to my beloved wife Jen that a trip to L.A. is a good idea. There’s also Toronto though. I’ve always wanted to see Rush play a hometown show.

I am a little disappointed in the band, to tell you the truth. In the past there have been a strange number of tours in which they were in New England within a day or two of my birthday. In 2013 they were at Mohegan Sun on May 9th, In 1990 they hit the mother lode of birthday shows. They were in Providence on the 7th, Hartford on the 8th, and Worcester on the 10th and 11th. I went on the 10th (I think). Add to that the fact that the Clockwork Angels tour in 2012 actually opened in Manchester, NH. Why then could they not have opened this tour in Boston on my birthday? Why? Especially since this is rumored to be either the final tour or the final tour of this magnitude. That would have been a pretty sweet Rush birthday present, don’t you think?

Why I Hate Tulsa, Oklahoma

I hate Tulsa, OK. I hate it I hate it I hate it.

Why do I hate it?

Because the Rush R40 tour kicks off in Tulsa tomorrow night and I am not there. That’s why I hate Tulsa, OK. I hate it I hate it I hate it. Stupid Tulsa gets the Rush opening night show and I don’t. Bunch of stupid jerk faces.

BB King

I just read that BB King’s health is declining. He’s 89 years old and he had a mild heart attack. He is home in Las Vegas receiving hospice care.

I don’t know if I want to live in a world that doesn’t have BB King in it. If there’s anyone who needs to live forever, it’s BB King. Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery.

One Final Burma Thought

I figure it’s only right that I post something from the 80’s pre-19 year split up Mission of Burma.

Leave it to the douchebags in the pit to pick the quietest song in the set to stage dive. Bunch of dumb asses. If you’re gonna do it, at least wait for Funworld.
