I might have been wrong in an observation I made about GarageBand the other day. 2.5 seconds on Google showed me that there is a way to record multiple tracks at once. There is a hidden Record Ready button. I have added it to one of the files I’m working on and it’s no longer hidden, but I can’t tell if it works or not because I don’t have anything plugged in at the moment. I’ll let you know how it goes. If it works, it will save me $200. Sweet.

Engineering Marvel
I bought a blender. A little Black and Decker single serving blender. It’s awesome. Though there is one thing that I wish I had thought through before ordering it from Amazon.
It loads… from the bottom. As in… not from the top. You load it, then you place the blending piece on top, then you flip it over and screw it into the motor. okay… all well and good… except that when you want to actually drink your single serving blended drink you have to unscrew the blending piece from the motor without also accidentally unscrewing the bottle from the blending piece.
Huh. An engineering marvel.
Though I have to say, the little weight watchers smoothie I just made was really good.
Robots
We spent some quality time with robots yesterday. This was the star of the show, thanks to the NH National Guard.
A Limitation of GarageBand
I did some recording today. I used the cabinet simulation on both my Fender Bassbreaker and Vox MV50 amps. I also used my A/B/Y switch to run both amps at the same time. It was awesome. Not as awesome as it would have been if I had been running the amps through actual speakers, but it was still awesome.
Unfortunately, it exposed a limitation of the mighty GarageBand. I put the output of the Fender into a track of it’s own. I then put the output of the Vox into a separate track. That’s when I realized something I kind of already knew… you can only record on one track at a time. I have recorded in stereo before but I did it on one stereo track. Given the way the setup works, I should have known that I couldn’t record on two tracks at once.
That means if I want to record band practices with each mic on a separate track… I have to spend $200 to get Logic Pro.
Shit.
Stereo
I didn’t use speakers, it was just direct output, but earlier today I recorded guitars in stereo. It sounded like a sloppy mess, but it also sounded MEGA!!!!!!!
Cat

The laying down on the mantle is new. When did that start?
Op Amp
So if I finish off the left over songs I’ll get to layer a ton of guitars together with an op amp Big muff fuzz pedal a la Smashing Pumpkins.
The Nerding Continues
Just when you thought it was safe to read the blog without hearing about the stupid RPM Challenge.
When February became March I had four songs that were one lead guitar part away from being complete. I also had three songs that needed vocals, lyrics, melodies, and lead guitar. That’s seven leftovers. But wait, there’s more!
On three separate occasions, while recording rhythm guitar parts, I used the Music Memos app on my iPhone to record a couple of bars worth of ideas for guitar riffs. I never got around to using those ideas. Well that clinches it. I had a total of 10 ideas that were left out of the final project. Now what does that mean?
It means that RPM2018 continues into March! I will finish these 10 songs so that I can have a full RPM album worth of outtakes. I’ll call it It’s Always Outtakes in Connecticut.
Game (still) on!
Almost a Year
It’s been almost one year since I opened this wordpress.com account. How time flies. I looked up the date earlier today and it was something like March 16 or so. I think. I can’t remember. I was curious how long I’d been running the site’s theme, and if it were time for a change or not. About a year seems like a good time to switch things up to me.
Last night I slept funny and I woke up today with a sore neck. I couldn’t really tilt my head to the right at all, and I could barely turn it that way. Sitting at work all day made it a little worse. It didn’t help that we had a huge storm raging here in New England today and the window near my desk is on my right. Every time I tried to look outside it hurt.
Tonight I visited my mother. It wasn’t my turn to Nana-sit, but my niece had a basketball game and I swapped Friday’s with my brother so he could go. As I was packing up to leave I threw my backpack over my right shoulder and BAM! the pain in my neck was amplified 10,000 times. I was so surprised by the blast of pain that I was shaky on my feet for a few minutes. I composed myself and then drove home. When I got home it hit me again as I was getting out of the car. BAM!
I feel a little better now. Tylenol might be helping, or just sitting still at my computer might be helping. Maybe it’s a little bit of both. Whatever it might be, I am a little nervous about trying to lie down to go to sleep. It’s way past my bedtime and I have to get up early tomorrow, but I’m still sitting here. I figured if I was to stay awake for a while I could at least change the template on my wordpress page.
See what I did there? I took a couple of completely unrelated topics and tied them together. Who said blogging isn’t an art form?
I’ve already changed the template twice tonight. Chances are I will change it a couple more times before I give up and go to sleep. Enjoy.
Alonetone
I started a new alonetone account. I started having trouble uploading files. They seemed to be making it to the server but they were showing as locked, or private, or whatever. I can’t find the setting to control that, and nothing I did seemed to change anything. I thought I had maxed out the number of tracks as upload #300 worked, but #301-310 did not.
Anyway, I started a new account and was able to upload this year’s RPM album without issue. You can see it here, if you’re a glutton for punishment.
I was really afraid of the reaction, but I sent a link to the album to the guys in the band. No response. Not surprised.
