Fun with Gastric Bypass Life

Fun with Gastric Bypass Life. I had a nice dinner. Chicken curry, a little white rice, and a little sweet potato. Nice. Maybe 5-6 ounces of food in total. No problems. My stomach was happy. No foamies, no discomfort, all was right with the world.

20 minutes later, without warning, I puked up the whole thing.

Sure I lost 220 pounds and I wouldn’t change a thing and it was 100% absolutely worth every side effect I have to deal with, but… the fuck?

So what do I put on the no fly list? The chicken curry and the sweet potatoes were the same color (approximately) so which one caused the problem? I don’t know.

    1. I don’t think so, but who knows? They told me before the surgery that I was going to be unable to eat some things and it would take a while to learn what will have a negative effect. I am pretty sure I’ve had sweet potatoes before without issue… but who knows? I’m constantly learning new things about my surgically redesigned digestive system. It’s so exciting!

    1. Foamies is a term I first heard on a gastric bypass patient’s forum on facebook. It’s a condition where you either eat too fast, or take too big a bite of food, or don’t chew enough, and the food gets stuck trying to get into what’s left of your stomach (the technical term for your new stomach is your pouch). Your body responds naturally by increasing saliva production in the hopes it will break the stuck bite of food down more so that it can get into your pouch. Unfortunately you cannot really swallow this extra saliva so it builds up in your mouth and you end up spitting a lot of it out. Normally this situation lasts for a good 20 minutes or so, but on a couple of occasions it has taken about two hours to clear. That long of a wait is very rare for me though.

I actually used to have the foamies once in a while before I had my gastric bypass surgery when I would fail to chew my food enough. I’ve also heard of people with dairy allergies experiencing it. It’s a little annoying when it happens, but it’s not too terrible. You just have to wait it out and you’ll feel fine again soon enough.

  1. Ugh!! I did that with lapband, nearly on a coworker. That’s when I revised to sleeve.
I hope it was a fluke… maybe too much too fast.. I dunno.. and that you’re feeling better.
