Red Sox Magic

Is anyone else completely over the moon about the Red Sox right now? They took two of three from Detroit and followed it with three straight against the Yankees. They can complete the Bronx sweep tomorrow afternoon. It’s been so much fun over the last week that I can’t wait for the next game. We are seven days into September and thus far we are collapse free. Keep it up!

Go Red Sox!

Red Sox / Yankees

Is there anything better than Red Sox vs Yankees baseball?

Sox down 8-4 in the seventh inning. Full count, two outs, bases loaded. Napoli lifts one into right field that just barely squeaks its way into the seats.

Grand Slam.
Tie game.

Go Red Sox!

Two Bad Things

Two bad things worth noting happened yesterday.

First, immediately after praising the Red Sox and fully placing myself upon the bandwagon, the Sox failed to mount another late inning come back and lost to Baltimore. Fortunately the Rays lost too so the lead in the division is still 2.5 games.

Second, I got a letter announcing that I have Jury Duty in November. Mother puss bucket!

Setting Myself Up for Misery

Well kids, September starts this weekend. You know what that means, right?

It means it’s time to start having my heart broken by the Red Sox.

They are 2.5 games up on Tampa Bay, in first place in the American League East. If it ended today, the Sox would be in the playoffs!

They keep coming back and winning games. Last night was another example. They were down 3-1 to the Orioles in the seventh inning. Two runs in the bottom of the seventh, one more in the bottom of the eighth, and chalk up yet another come back win for the Red Sox.

I can’t believe I am about to say this publicly, but John Lackey has been great. They don’t score any runs for him (is it personal?) but his pitching has been excellent. Lester seems like he might be back to his old (meaning not 2012, and not mid season 2013) form. He’s been dominant in his last few starts. Peavy has been all we hoped for and more. Good ol’ disabled-list-after-holding-his-child Clay? Well who the hell knows, but he is pitching a rehab start this week. If he comes back, and is close to the guy he was early in the season… well… that would be a pretty formidable starting rotation, would it not?

The offense is clicking. Napoli no longer strikes out every at bat, just most of them. Ortiz seems to be cooling off a bit. Everyone else looks ready to make a post season run. Things look really good here in Boston.

Of course… September starts this weekend.

September. The bane of the Red Sox fan’s existence.

Not all of us remember the 1978 collapse, but pretty much all of us remember the 2011 collapse. Those who don’t remember are either two years old, or boozed it clear out of their brain.

Just in time for the heart break… I have started to believe. They are going to screw me again, aren’t they.

Go Red Sox!!!

We Didn’t Win

There was a Powerball drawing last night with an estimated jackpot of 400 gagillian zillion dollars.  I once heard state (in this case, multi-state) lotteries described as a tax on the stupid.  Well, I paid that tax after work yesterday.  I bought 10 tickets.

I completely forgot about it until a few minutes ago, so I checked my numbers.  Of the 10 tickets, five had exactly one of the winning numbers.  I could be wrong, but I think that’s the best result I’ve ever had!  WOOHOO!  I lost, but by less than I usually lose by!  Nice!  Each loss brings us that much closer to the inevitable lottery jackpot.  I can feel it!

I mentioned yesterday that I had to get up super early to cover something at work.  The end result was that I went to bed super early last night.  I wanted to listen to the Red Sox game while I read myself to sleep (still reading Tony Iommi’s Iron Man.  I am nearing the end of the Dio years) but as the game was about to start I put the book away and laid down with my headphones still on.  I’ll just lay here and relax while I listen, thinks me.  Nope.  I was out like a light before the first pitch.  I woke up a couple of times with an ear pod (magically) still in place.  I would hear the score and then fall back to sleep.

That changed when I woke up in the top of the ninth with the Sox down 5-4 and a runner on first.  I stayed conscious for that.  Then Drew comes up with two on and BOOM the Sox are up 7-5.  Even on the other short wake ups, when I would hear that they were losing, I knew that there was no way Houston was beating us again.  I didn’t fall asleep again until after the game was over.

There is something about this year’s team.  They shouldn’t be as good as they are, given the horros of last season, but they just keep winning.  If nothing else, it’s fun to watch.  Hell, they’ve already won more games than last year!  Go Red Sox

Changing the subject again, I just cooked my telecommuting lunch on the grill in the back yard. The hamburger was frozen so I walked around the edge of the woods and took two pics with Oggl.

You are utterly blown away, I can tell.

In closing, my wife is stressing out about something today. I have full confidence that she is stressing out about nothing. She is just so incredible that she’s going to kick the holy hell out of that which bugs her. I know it. You all know it. She knows it too, deep down. She’s just awesome. Simple as that. Still, if you can spare some positive energy of the calm and relaxing sort, I am sure she’d love a little extra.

I love you like crazy, Jennifer. You are simply amazing.

I’m a Bad Red Sox Fan

Yesterday was the first time in ages that I caught a large chunk of a Red Sox game. I didn’t want to miss Peavy’s debut, and he was pretty awesome. Just imagine if he can keep it up at that level for a couple of months, and then if we can get Bucholtz back too!

We caught most of the game in the car as we were driving around, looking for something to do. Eventually we decided to just go home. When we pulled into the driveway the D-Bags D-Backs had the bases loaded with no outs in the 8th, with the Red Sox holding a 3-1 lead. It was tense. I heard the second Arizona run and the play at the plate, but that was it. In the time it took me to get into the house, get settled, and put the radio back on, the Sox had gotten out of the inning with the 3-2 lead in tact.

I feel like such a bad fan. I want to get into this team as they are surprising the hell out of every one. I’ve just been so pissed off after the damn Stanley Cup Final that I don’t want to get wrapped up in a team and get hurt again. Maybe now that we are post trade deadline I might be able to start caring again.

Go Red Sox!

Oh Yeah, the Red Sox: Post Script

Sorry, folks. I’m an idiot. A total and complete idiot.

The Red Sox vs Yankees series didn’t start yesterday, it starts tonight.

See how out of touch with baseball I’ve become?

Oh Yeah, the Red Sox

You know something? I pretty much forgot about the Red Sox. That other Boston team’s run to blowing the Stanley Cup first occupied all of my sports watching time and energy, and then after the choke I was too depressed to enjoy any athletic event other than watching tiny birds.

The all-star break is over. Yay. Goodbye to the dumbest scrimmage game of the year. But as the second half of the season kicks off tonight, the Red Sox find themselves in first place in the American League East with the highest winning percentage in all of the American League, and the most wins in the majors. So this is what happens when schmucko the clown gets the sack? Works for me.

As of this moment, I officially dedicate myself to paying a lot more attention to my home town team. It starts with a series against the fourth place (4th place) New York Yankees at Fenway tonight. Nothing would be sweeter than kicking off the second half of the season with a hearty sweep of the Yankees. That would please my baseball fan self to no end.

Go Red Sox!

Something Weird

Want to hear something weird?

I haven’t posted anything today.

Isn’t that weird?

The kids have had a recent fascination with Disney Jr. Why? I have no idea. Last night I was finally able to wrench the TV remote away from them so that I could watch the Bruins and flip over to the Red Sox between periods.

Yeah. Both teams lost.

That’s probably why I have nothing to say today. Boston sports heartache.
