Men’s Ice Hockey Quarter Finals

There were four games played in the Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey tournament.

Slovakia eliminated Austria, 4-0.
Russia eliminated Norway, 4-0 in a game that was much closer than the score indicated.
Latvia eliminated Switzerland, 3-1.
Czech Republic eliminated Slovakia, 5-3. They almost blew a 4-0 lead, but they held on to win it.

That sets up the quarter finals matches for the four teams with a first day bye.

Tomorrow at 3:00am Eastern time, Slovenia’s cinderella ride most likely ends against Sweden.
At 7:30am Russia faces Finland in what should be a really great game. No offense to our hosts, but I am rooting for Finland in this one.
At noon Latvia will be destroyed by Canada.
Also at noon, The Czechs face the USA. This too should be a great game. Team USA has a real test on their hands.

Here’s to a US win.

Olympic Hockey Quarterfinals

The match up for the quarter final round of the men’s ice hockey tournament in Sochi is set, although the times and locations are not.

The seedings after the preliminary round are as follows:

1. Sweden
2. USA
3. Canada
4. Finland
5. Russia
6. Switzerland
7. Czech Republic
8. Slovenia
9. Austria
10. Slovakia
11. Latvia
12. Norway

The top four teams, Sweden, USA, Canada, Finland, all get a by to start this round.  The rest of the pool matches up on Tuesday 2/18:

Russia vs. Norway
Switzerland vs. Latvia
Czech Republic vs. Slovakia
Slovenia vs. Austria

On Wednesday 2/19 the top four match up with the winners from Tuesday:

Sweden vs. winner SLO-AUT
USA vs. winner CZE-SVK
Canada vs. winner SUI-LAT
Finland vs. winner RUS-NOR 

Team USA has already beaten Slovakia.  I fear them less than the Czechs.  As much as it sucks to have to wait until Wednesday for another game, I am more than pleased with the way the prelims went.

Change of Plans

For the first time we are skipping Weight Watchers. It has nothing to do with fear of the scale. Nothing to do with the fact that we threw a birthday party for an 11 year old last Sunday, and that the cake was gigantic and absolutely magical in It’s deliciousness, and therefore is gone.

No. We are skipping the weigh in and the meeting because the USA vs Russia hockey game starts in 13 minutes. You can take the Cold War out of the international political climate, but you can’t take the Cold War out of the Olympic Ice Hockey fan.
