Film Thoughts

Two thoughts on the mountain of film I got back from the development lab today.

First, I need to learn how to hold my camera without leaning to the side.

Every square format shot is tilted. Do I have one leg longer than the other or something?

Second, I am not vibing with this brand of film. I bought two rolls of 120 and two rolls of 35mm. I shot the two 120’s last week and one of the 35mm’s today. After I finish the last roll I think I am done with this brand. Oh well.

Sunrise Fail

The forecast called for clear skies at Salisbury Beach at sunrise today. The forecast was wrong. I was there and I took a bunch of pictures, but the clouds covered the horizon and there was no photo of the sun coming out of the water. It was a wasted effort on that front, but I went to Plumb Island after and got a nice pic of the lighthouse.

When the sun eventually did break through, it made the Merrimack River look nice.

Plum Island

I went back to Plum Island today to take a film shot or two of the lighthouse. I took some digital pics as well because why not? I walked over to the river this time because the lighthouse itself is boring and uninteresting. I saw some chartered fishing boats loading up. It was cool. The Merrimack River is HUGE here, right near the point where it empties into the ocean.

I used Dad’s camera and finished off the roll that I originally loaded up around Christmas. I might send it off to a lab today. I think I have one other roll that’s ready to go as well. Maybe a trip to the post office is time well spent on my last day off this month.

There you have it though, the highlights from this morning’s photo excursion. When will I do another? Not tomorrow, as it is a work from the office day. After that? Who knows.

Lighthouse

No Boston photo walk tomorrow. Where to instead?

I was thinking of trying the ocean again after the bust last time. Then I did some Googling and found there is a lighthouse near Salisbury Beach. That’s something to think about, eh?

There are lighthouses in Gloucester and Portsmouth too, both less than an hour away from home. Those might be in play in the future, but Plum Island, near Salisbury is closest and I was thinking of being in the neighborhood anyway.

Very interesting.

CameraBag for Mac

Did I mention I got promoted last month? Well I got a little bit of a raise today. I am celebrating by buying two things. Later I am going to buy The Walking Dead Compendium One which is 48 graphic novels in one 1000 page or so book.

First though, I bought CameraBag 2.5 for Mac. CameraBag for iPhone was the first camera app I put onto my first iPhone. It was a cool filter app before Instagram came along. It turned out to not be quite as cool as Hipstamatic, but there were no in-app purchases. I found out today that there is a Mac version. I read some reviews this morning before work and tonight I installed it (it was on sale).

So I am monkeying around with some of the presets. Allow me to bombard you with stuff. Because… ya know… I can.

I started with a pic of the Nubble Lighthouse. Here is the original, as shared on Flickr:

The first filter I tried is called 1967:
lighthouse - 1967

The next filter was one of my favorites from the iPhone version. Lolo. This picture probably isn’t a good choice for the filter, but I had to do it.
lighthouse - Lolo

Next is another fav from the iPhone app, Helga:
lighthouse - helga

Finally we have a black and white filter called 1962:
lighthouse - 1962

This is the first post you’re going to get showing off this application. It won’t be the last. It might be the first of 20-30 billion posts, all tonight. Enjoy.
