Night Deer

I noticed when I filled up the bird feeders that they emptied out really fast. I blamed it on the asshole squirrels. Last night showed me that it might have been someone else.

At about 11 last night I woke up and happened to look out the window. I know the moon is only a few days past new, but it must have been really bright. I could see a shadowy figure by one of the feeders. A four legged fury silhouette. The feeder was empty but our guest was picking crumbs out of the snow. It was a deer. It was pretty cool spying on her as she trespassed on our property and stole from the birds. I think it was the closest I’ve seen one of them come to the house. I got up and turned on the bathroom light and she bolted.

It was pretty cool.

Winter Wonderland

I just shoveled the end of the driveway. Pardon me a minute while I die of exhaustion…

…okay, I’m back.

The yard is most definitely a winter wonderland today. I saw three deer playing in the snow in the woods. Of course, they may have been bouncing around because the snow was too deep for them to walk. That would mean they weren’t exactly playing, but possibly struggling for survival. Still, they looked like they were playing.

I’ve seen two of my favorite back yard wilderness birds today. Cardinals and woodpeckers. All we need now is an owl and a red tailed hawk and the day will be a jackpot all around.

Apart from the horrors of the snow removal, of course. I’m going to take a fist full of aspirin now. Talk to you all later.

It’s New Years Day for Deer Too

We just had seven deer walking down the street. They came out of the woods at our driveway, walked down the street and walked into the neighbor’s yard.

A few days ago, I saw six of them in the woods. A couple of years ago I saw eight at once. This time there were seven. Maybe someday I’ll get a definitive count on the deer population. Still, walking down the street? How freakin’ awesome was that???

Close

I was outside bringing the trash barrels to the street and I caught a couple of deer watching me. They weren’t that close, but they were close enough to get a pic with my phone.

One step closer to making the deer our new indoor pets, right Patches?

Deer in the Snow

We woke up to a little snow this morning. When I looked out the window there were three deer. In the snow. Just hanging out and being cool. I went for my camera, but it was on the other side of the house. Crap. I got it and went back to the bedroom. The deer were still there. The wrong lens was on. Crap. I swapped lenses. The deer were still there. I had to open the window. Last time they heard it and were spooked. Crap. I opened the window. The deer were still there.

At this point I put the camera away, went back out to the dining room table, and punched into work. About 20 minutes later it dawned on me that I wasn’t wearing my glasses. I went back to the bedroom to get them. I looked out the window and immediately saw two of the deer standing pretty close to where they are in these pics. I didn’t see the third one right away, but suddenly she came out of nowhere, running at a fast (but probably not pedal to the metal) clip past the other two and out of sight. That was cool.

Back Yard Visitors

We had some visitors in the back yard today.

They usually make their first appearance of the season in November. I was beginning to get worried that they wouldn’t be coming around this year. Fortunately they squeaked in before the month ended.
