The company I work for has traditionally thrown a company wide Christmas party on Christmas eve.  We would work a half day and then the few thousand of us all pile into one building and listen to a live band while eating catered food and trying to not step on each other.

This year, for the first time in forever, we’re not playing that game.  Instead we are getting Christmas eve off.  As nice as the company party was, I prefer it this way.  We host a party at home on Christmas eve, so this will give me more time at home to get ready for it.

The result of the cancellation of the company wide party is an increase in smaller work group parties.  We’ve always been a part of a yankee swap.  A few years ago our large group was split into two smaller groups, but we still all get together for the yankee theft.  That’s still going to happen this year.  There is also a lunch get together for all of the groups under my direct manager.  We started that two years ago and it’s one of those interesting things where a big group of programmers try to be social.  Just get us talking about Star Wars or Back to the Future and we’re fine.

This year though there is an added wrinkle.  A third Christmas party has been added.  This one includes everyone under two different directors.  Over 150 people.  That’s a lot of people getting stuffed into a conference room.  Craziness!

But here is the real catch.  This large group Christmas lunch gathering actually conflicts with the yankee swap lunch gathering.  I don’t know what to think?  I have never been this popular in my entire life!  Two parties happening at the same time that actually invited me!  It’s like, woah!  Or maybe more like Woah Ho Ho!  (see what I did there?  how’s that for a disgustingly bad holiday pun?)

Christmas Pictures

The kids woke up at their Dad’s house this morning, so we haven’t had our Christmas gift bonanza yet. I was just thinking to myself that I would not use my Nikon this year. I was just going to use my iPhone and the camera+ app and that would be all. No lugging around the bag and stuff this year, just the phone. I was thinking of our Christmas celebration at home and our Christmas dinner celebration at my sister’s house later tonight.

Less than five minutes after coming to this command decision I was putting the wide lens on the Nikon and snapping pics of the tree.

Camera+ is a great app, but really… who the hell was I trying to kid?

Merry Christmas, everyone! HoHoHo! I hope Santa treats everyone out there in internet land well! If you celebrate Christmas, have a great day! If you don’t celebrate Christmas, have a great day!

Getting Close

It’s been a certifiably nutty day around here today. Lots of busy, busy, and busy. It’s like everyone on Earth decided that today was the day to try and get everything done before Christmas.

I’m not overwhelmed yet, although the cat is making a TON of noise.

The important thing is this…

In less than 24 hours I’ll be on my day and a half long Christmas holiday.

So close. So very close.

New York, the Rest of the Weekend

Get ready. Here comes a bonanza of New York pics. Basically, everything that doesn’t involve Ground Zero.

We stayed at the Omni on 5th Avenue. We started our Saturday with a nice walk down 5th.

We came across St Patrick’s Cathedral. It is entirely under renovations. Inside and out.
DSC_0013

We did not go to Radio City this time, but I always feel the need to acknowledge it.
DSC_0015

I’m sure there is a logical reason for big tanks of Nitrogen to be out on the street. I’m sure of it.
DSC_0031

A bunch of the stores on 5th had Christmas window displays. I want to say that this is Sacks, but I’m not sure. I’m not even sure I spelled Sacks correctly.
DSC_0033

We visited the Rockefeller Center tree on Sunday, but not on Saturday. This was taken as we passed by, from across the street.

Down the street from the Empire State Building. We didn’t go there either. It’s not the tallest building in the city anymore.

5th Ave, babie.

Modern Art, or geometry homework? You be the judge.
DSC_0295

The obligatory subway adventure. Get ready for blurry train pics.
DSC_0300

Told you.
DSC_0314

My love. My wife. She who had the ridiculously irresponsible idea to visit the city. Good thinking, love!

We happened upon a movie shoot. Or at least some trucks and a caterer.
DSC_0334

I took many, many pictures of random buildings.

I love finding the normal looking buildings hidden behind the gigantic sky scrapers. Look at this little two story runt.

A razor, a shaving brush, and a stand to hang them off of… $300. I love New York. (no, we didn’t buy it. My beard (or the ugly crap that passes for it) ain’t worth that much)
DSC_0364

On this corner is located a place that needs to be saved for future reference. Last time we were in New York we stayed across the street from a restaurant that had a Sunday brunch. On Sunday we went there without realizing that their Sunday brunch was $100 a plate. Oh my stars it was worth it though. The bacon… oh the bacon.

The Christmas lights looked more impressive at night, but what are you going to do, right?
DSC_0385

Concrete next to glass and steel. Old next to new.

After lunch we went back to the hotel for a while. When we went out again it was dark out.

That cop came up on us while we were crossing the street. We were in the way so a bus couldn’t pull through the red light to let the cop by. Sorry about that, officer.
DSC_0441

This is on Park Avenue. Jen thought it was the Helmsley Building.

The Christmas lights really are much better at night.

Because we booked the hotel at the absolute last second, we were able to snag a massive discount on a fantastic room on the top floor of the Omni hotel. Granted, it wasn’t the suite on the top floor of the Omni hotel. This plaque is on the wall outside of said suite.

On Sunday morning we went for another walk. This time we wanted to go to the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree.

There were three Christmas light cats. At least we only saw three. The third one is coming later on.

Back at the tree.

This trip was our Christmas present to each other. Merry Christmas, Jen. I love you so much!

We didn’t go up to The Rock’s observation floor. It was freezing out on the ground. It would have been much worse a billion feet in the air.

And we finish with the third Christmas light cat. I hope you enjoyed my pointless pics from our Christmasy weekend get away to New York.
