Rush has Been Nominated

So Rush has been nominated for the rock and roll hall of fame.

So has Deep Purple, Procol Harum, and the Paul Butterfield Blues band.

So has Donna Summer, Chic, NWA, and Public Enemy.

sigh

Rush fans worldwide are now freaking out with glee over having their band recognized by such an esteemed institution.

I can’t say that with a straight face.

The rock and roll hall of fame is a pile of dog shit.  Each year when the nominations were announced and Rush was snubbed I danced with delight.  I don’t want my favorite band to have anything to do with this garbage.  I listen to this band that bucks trends, avoids the trappings of the commercial industry, writes music for themselves not for their corporate masters (in fact, they have been able to keep all label people out of their sessions since 1976.  That feat is all but unimaginable).  In short, they make music.  The fact that their music sells like crazy, and has for decades, is irrelevant.  They are not in the business of moving units.  That sort of came to them by accident.  Hell, they made 2112 in 1976 with the full intention that it would be so far removed from what their label wanted them to do that they would be dropped and their careers would be over.  The fact that it has sold a gagillion copies must still be a shock to all involved.

I hate the rock and roll hall of fame.  I hate the fact that Rush has been nominated.  I sincerely hope they don’t get in.  I want them to have as little to do with that shit hole as possible.

AL East Hate

I hate all of the non-Boston teams in the American League East.

All I needed was for the Yankees to lose and the Orioles to win.  Was that too much to ask?

Apparently.  Especially considering the Yankees played the pathetic Red Sox.

Baltimore has already lost, which gives the Yankees the division title.  The Yankees lead 13-2 in the seventh inning.  Their win will give the Yankees the top seed in the AL.  They will play the winner of the wild card play in game between Baltimore and the suddenly pathetic Rangers.

I hate you, Orioles.
I especially hate you, Yankees.

Go A’s!

The A’s Win

Today at 3:30 I went to the MLB iOS app at work and started listening to the A’s vs Rangers game.  My hopes for tonight, the final night of the baseball regular season, is for Oakland and Baltimore to win, and Texas and New York to lose.

The A’s scored in the first inning and there was much rejoicing.  The Rangers scored five times in the third and it was the end of the world.  Then my phone started ringing and didn’t stop for quite a while.  I snuck a peek at the score once and it was five to three Rangers.  When I got back to the broadcast the A’s were up eight to five.  I listened to the rest of the game, feeling cautiously optimistic, and the A’s pulled it out!

The Oakland A’s were five games behind the Texas Rangers in the AL West nine days ago…

…and they won the division.

Fantastic job Oakland!

Unfortunately, the Orioles are currently losing and the Yankees are currently winning.  Jerks.

In the Miguel Cabrera front, he is still in the lead in all three categories and he is still playing tonight.

The Last Races

The Orioles beat the Rays last night, 1-0.  Of course.  The Orioles always win by one run, don’t they?

The A’s beat the Rangers to set up the marquis game of the night tonight.  The two teams are now tied for first in the AL West, meaning whoever wins tonight does not have to play in the wild card play in game.  That’s huge.  Go A’s!

Back to the AL East, the Orioles could have tied the Yankees for first in the division if only the Red Sox could have won their damn game.  But no, the Yankees scored twice in the ninth to send the game to extra innings, and then won it in the 12th.  So the Yankees hold onto their one game division lead.  If they lose tonight and the O’s win then we have a tie and there will be a one game play off on Thursday to determine who goes to the one game wild card play off on Friday.  That could be pretty freakin’ interesting, eh?

In the National league, the Cardinals clinched the final play off spot.  The Dodgers are out.  I got at least one wish; a Josh Beckett free post season.  I might lay off the guy next year, we’ll see, but for now I am glad he is out.  The only thing left to decide in that NL is who gets home field in the one game play off.

I do love baseball.  The Red Sox sucking this year made me forget that a little bit, but I remember now. I love baseball.

Go A’s.
Go Orioles.
Bite my shiny metal ass, Yankees.

Miguel Cabrera

Okay, so earlier today I wrote here that I was not rooting for Miguel Cabrera to win the triple crown because I wanted Yaz to still be the last player to win it.

I have changed my mind.
The Tigers have two games left.  Neither game has any bearing on anything else.  They have already clinched the AL Central and the Royals have been out of it forever.
Cabrera leads the home run race by one.  He leads the RBI race by 10.  He leads the batting average race by .004.  If the season ended right now he would be your triple crown winner.  Many people expected him to announce that he would sit out the last two games and rest up for the playoffs.  Earlier today, however, his manager announced that he would play both of the remaining games.  He’s going to risk blowing the batting title, and he is going to try and pad the other two stats.
He could take the easy way out and let Hamilton and Trout try to knock him off, but instead he’s going to play and force them to beat him.
This sort of reminds all Boston fans of that magical day in 1941 when Ted Williams woke up with a .400 batting average and was given the option of sitting out the final day’s double header to insure that he would finish the season over .400.  He said no and played both games and went six for eight to finish the season at .406.
Baseball is not a sport that at the professional level is thought to require what we call balls.
Ted Williams showed some serious balls on the last day of the season in 1941, and Miguel Cabrera is doing the same over the final two days of 2012.
I am now rooting for him.  Go out there, Miguel and win that triple crown.  Be the first player to do so since my hero, Captain Carl did it during the impossible dream season of 1967.  Go out there tonight and tomorrow and take what you deserve.
Damn, I love baseball.  The friggin’ Red Sox have made me forget that over the last 13 months.  I freakin’ love baseball!

October Get Away

We still haven’t decided where to go for our October get away.  Now that I know the true story of Abraham Lincoln the Vampire Hunter, maybe we should go back here….

Maybe we’ll see some sun this time.

We’re still working on it.

Red Sox History in the Making

The Red Sox lost their 90th game of the season yesterday.  The last time the team lost 90 games in a season was 1966.  Suddenly losing 90 games seems like a good thing!

Here’s why.

In 1966, the Boston Red Sox were a joke.  They came in last place in the American league.  They were awful.

In 1967 they won the pennant and Yaz won the triple crown.  Fenway park was empty in 1966, and it was full to the rafters in 1967, and has remained that way pretty much ever since.

They went from worst to first.  Who says that they cannot replicate that amazing feat next year (I do).  In ’67 they may have been a healthy Tony Canigliaro away from winning it all.  All that stands between the Sox and glory next year may be the sacking of Schmucko the Clown (probably on Thursday, right?).

If nothing else, the Sox have to show up and play like their lives depend on it in the final three games of 2012.  Not because their lives depend on it, but because they Yankees lives depend on it.  If the Sox pull out a three win miracle, and the Orioles and A’s win their last few games, we could end up with the Yankees as the second wild card, meaning they would have to travel to Oakland for the wild card play in game.

We want this.

Go A’s.
Go Orioles.
GO RED SOX! (wishful thinking, I know)
