I’m Sick and I’m not Happy About It

My step daughter had a nasty cough over the weekend. I started showing some signs of catching it late Sunday night. On Monday morning I was coughing, but otherwise okay. After lunch, however I started getting congested too. I had a bad feeling about today.

Sure enough, when I woke up this morning I was much worse. I felt like I had a fever, and I had a bad headache too. The kind of headache that gets worse in the light. When I called in to work my boss said he expected to hear from me. He also said that he went home earlier than he had planned yesterday because he didn’t want to catch what I had.

Woooops. Sorry about that.

Anyway, I guess it’s back to bed with me! Urgh… Crud.

Height

I just had a really distressing experience.  One that I bet 99% of you out there in internet land cannot relate to in any way.

Here’s the quick back story.  I’m tall.  Due to a seeming inaccuracy of height measuring devices across New England, I am either six foot four inches tall, six foot five inches tall, or six foot six inches tall.

The 6’6″ measurement was probably just wishful thinking on my 19 year old self’s part.  6’4″ is probably a calibration error on a doctor’s office scale/measurement device.  I’m probably 6’5″.  Maybe a hair less than that.  Whatever the accurate statistic is, I am tall.  Really tall.

However, a few minutes ago I was feeling small.  Diminutive, even.

I was in line for lunch at the cafeteria and there were two guys standing directly in front of me.  One of them was about my height.  It’s rare, but it happens.  He was probably a shade taller than I.  I would have guessed that he was a legitimate 6’6″.

That’s not the crazy part.  The crazy part was the guy he was waiting in line with.  That guy had at least five inches in height over me.  He towered over me.  He downright dwarfed me.  That doesn’t happen often at all.  It’s very rare.  Not unheard of, but rare.  That was the crazy part, but not the really crazy part.

The really crazy part was the combination.  There were TWO guys in front of me in line and they were BOTH taller than me!  Both of them!  Holy crap, two guys who were actually waiting in line together, having a pleasant conversation, were BOTH TALLER THAN ME!

I honestly can’t remember the last time that happened.  When I was in college (the last time) and I had a show on the campus radio station (WUML, Lowell) we did a weekly segment with the men’s basketball coach.  He was taller than me.  One time he brought one of his players on the air with him.  You would think that would have been an occasion where there were two taller people in the room with me, but no.  I was taller than the player (by a tiny bit).  I think the last time this happened was probably high school.  Grade 9 maybe.  I can’t even say that for sure.  I might have to go all the way back to Junior High!

Needless to say it felt awfully strange standing there being the short guy.  I’m all out of sorts now.  Now I know how Hobbits must feel, and now I know why they live in holes in the ground!

Newtown

“We can’t accept events like this as routine. Are we really prepared to say that we are powerless in the face of such carnage?” – President Obama

We need to demand change. I don’t know the solution. Chances are that no one does. Does that mean that we should sit idly by and let this happen again and again?

No. It means that we have to be creative. We have to rely on original thinking. We put men on the damn moon, you think that violence in our culture is beyond us? I do not.

Action is required. Change is required. Passivity is death. Inaction is death.

Stand up to this, Mr. President. I, for one, have faith in you.

Bring it On

Shit, showered, and shaved.  Feeling like a new man.  Ready to face the day.

Ready to face the Christmas shopping!

Jen and her son are going to get gifts for her daughter (from her son) and me (from both kids).  Jen’s daughter and I are going to get gifts for her brother (from her) and her mom (from both kids).

It’s December 16th.  Nine shopping days left, counting today…

…and we’re going to the mall!

Wish us luck!

Potential Banner Pics

I’m in full on nerd mode right now.

I wanted to change the photo in my banner. I figured something guitar related would be appropriate. I had a couple of pics that might be good source material…

This one has received over a thousand hits on Flickr.

This one seems to have a little too much going on, but after cropping it down it might be okay.

I don’t want to use camera phone pics, but this Hipstamatic of my 12-string is a minor favorite.

In the end I decided to take a couple of new pictures of my Les Paul and try those.

I ended up going with an attempt at redoing the banner on my Google+ profile, which is a camera phone pic taken on the day Jim Marshall died.

And there you have it… A nerd and his camera and his guitars.
