You Know it’s a Big Day When…

Untitled

You know it’s a big day when fat boy wears a tie.

My Nikon D90 is charged.  I have the long lens on it right now, but I’m taking the shorter lens too just in case.  Being the family of the valedictorian has the perk of a good seat so there is a chance we might be too close for the long lens.  We will see.  The graduation ceremony is outside so lighting shouldn’t be an issue the way it was at the awards night.  Those pictures just sucked.

We still have about four hours to go before the festivities start, but my wife, my in-laws, and I are going out to a late lunch/early dinner before hand so we need to get all dressed up now.

My step daughter has seemed nervous for the last couple of days.  At times she has seemed rather freaked out.  She doesn’t need to be.  She’s going to be fine.  She’s had to perform in front of big crowds before and this speech is nothing different.  She’s also a black belt in karate so if she gets spooked she can just close her eyes and visualize that she’s roundhouse kicking every single person in the crowd right in the face.  Problem solved.

I’m so proud of her.  I can’t even stand how proud I am.  I’ll try really hard for the rest of my life, but I am never going to be able to express to her just how proud I am.

I Should Have Known

Last night.  Game seven.  I should have seen it coming.

First off, the Red Sox played an afternoon game and they won.  We can only expect one of our teams to win on any given day.  The Red Sox should have thrown the game so that cosmically there would have been room for the Bruins to win.

Second, my little clip on sunglasses thing broke.  Last year, in preparation for our trip to Disney World, I searched far and wide (via Google) for clip on sunglasses that would fit on my prescription eye glasses.  I found exactly one company who made them, and they only sold on ebay.  I bought a set straight away, only to have the shipping delayed for ages upon ages.  They didn’t get here in time for our Disney trip, but they were waiting at home for me when we returned.

Yesterday the forecast was for lots of sun so I put them on for the drive to work.  Everything was fine.  Then when I was about to go home for the day I went to put them on again and one of the lenses had broken off.  Sonofa….   I went back to ebay, found the listing, and ordered another one.  As of today the estimated delivery date is well in time for our next Disney trip.  How much do you want to bet it gets delayed again.

Reason number three I should have known was the traffic was utter shite yesterday.  Both the morning and evening commutes.  That didn’t effect the actual game at all, but it was still crappy and pissed me off.

The fourth reason I should have known was that with 10 seconds left in the first period Brad Marchand decided to leave the ice for a line change, leaving his man uncovered and allowing St Louis to score a devastating, backbreaking goal.  Wait, I shouldn’t have seen that coming because why would anyone want to change lines with TEN SECONDS LEFT IN A PERIOD IN GAME SEVEN OF THE STANLEY CUP EFFING FINAL!

Okay.  I’m done.  High School graduation tomorrow.  High School graduation party on Saturday.  Maybe sneak a little guitar playing in tonight.  Maybe visit my Dad on Sunday for Father’s Day.  Who knows.  (I am never included in the Father’s Day planning, just as my wife is never included in the Mother’s Day planning.  Obviously I am no one’s father, but everyone lets me play a little.  They just prefix everything with Step.)

I want to say wait for next year, but I’m so crushed I am more likely to say the hell with next year.  What a disaster.

Game Seven – Pregaming

Yesterday turned into a pretty bad day at work and it’s carrying over to today.  I need things to calm down so I can stop worrying about work and start worrying about game seven.

The Boston Bruins vs the St Louis Blues at TD Garden tonight at around 8:20ish.  Game Seven of the Stanley Cup final.  Winner take all.  All the marbles.  Eternal glory or suicidal depression.  It’s all on the line.  The heroic, majestic Bruins or the head hunting, slew footing, cheap shot-ing Blues.  It all comes down to tonight…

…and I’m terrified.

If it turns into a special teams match up the Bruins should win easy.  If it stays a five on five game… well… Tuukka Rask is going to have to be the hero again.

I’m doing everything I can to help.  Before game four we had a quick visit with my brother’s family.  The kids were all excited about the game but my brother called me out.  He said I wasn’t a true Bruins fan because I was still shaving.  Where was my playoff beard?  Haha, says I.  Then the Bruins lost games four and five.  When I woke up Sunday morning I was going through my morning routine and thought I needed a shave.  I was lazy though and I put it off for a day.  Then the Bruins won game six.  Well, there’s no way I’m shaving now!   I guess that means I have playoff stubble.  It’s really itchy and it’s driving me bat shit crazy, but I’m not shaving today no sir no way.

There’s also the t-shirt.  When the Bruins won the Eastern Conference final I ordered a couple of Bruins t-shirts in size super-fat-guy.  I figured I’d have them in a few days.  Nope, it took weeks.  I didn’t get them until after game five.  I was wearing one of them on Sunday while watching game six.  You bet your frozen pucks I’m going to be wearing it again tonight!  I’ve been waiting years to come across a lucky Bruins shirt!  Do I finally have one?  I think I do!

Obviously my stubble and my t-shirt won’t amount to much if they can’t continue hanging on against St Louis’ unbelievable forecheck, or if the continue with those weak ass attempts at clearing the D-zone, or if they keep trying those insane cross ice passes in front of the goal, or if they continue to try to make the cute play with one pass too many on the rush, or if Tuukka… nope, not saying anything about Tuukka.  Tuukka is the man.

I’m terrified but I’m also full of cautious optimism.  It’s game seven of the Stanley Cup Final.  I’m hoping for a Bruins win and I don’t care how they get it (though scoring 5-6 goals in the first period and cruising to an epic blow out would be nice).

Go Bruins!

Sunday’s Band Pracitce

Looking back, Sunday was a big day.  My step daughter came home from her college orientation in Vermont, The Bruins won game six of the Stanley Cup Final and forced tomorrow night’s winner take all game seven, Fear the Walking Dead’s season five episode two wasn’t terrible… it wasn’t good either, but it wasn’t terrible, and there was a band practice.  The band practice was the least of all things, by far, so here’s a post talking about it!

It was a weird one.  We brought one new song to add to our 80’s mini set.  We’re going to play my high school reunion later this year.  I graduated in the 80’s.  Hence, the number of cliched 80’s songs needs to be increased.  We tried out “I Ran” by Flock of Seagulls.  Not the worst song of the decade, but one I’ve never had to play before.

We played it first and it felt pretty good.  Not great, but pretty good.  Listening back to the tape… ummm… it wasn’t good.  It was pretty crappy.  From there we went over some older songs and they all felt okay but on the tape they sound kinda bad.  We hit on a few of the more recent additions that we weren’t 100% sure of even before we took over a month off, and the rust was thick and heavy.

I had one experience that I have never had before.  It freaked me out a little.

I can sing.  I don’t like to sing, but I can do it.  I can also sing in harmony.  I do kinda like doing that but if I am less than spot on it devastates my confidence and my voice gets softer and I tend to stand further away from the mic.  It all comes down to me not really wanting to sing in the first place.

We do an REO Speedwagon song.  Yes, that is mistake #1 but let’s ignore that.  The chorus has a lot of vocal parts and some interesting harmony that is something other than just a line that sits a 3rd above or a 4th below the melody.  It’s kind of a cool thing and I want to nail it.  Unfortunately it’s really high.  Like, castration high.  Like, Michael Jackson would listen to it and think, damn that’s high.  I can reach most of it, but one note is beyond me.  I usually figure out a work around of some kind.  I either sit on a lower chord tone, or I sneak into falsetto (which sounds like shite), or I somehow crack into it which kinda hurts but when I hit it, it sounds good.

Anyway, we are rolling through this song Sunday night and we come to the chorus and I reach for the first note and… I missed.  By a mile.  Like, the note, which is one I normally hit with ease, was in Haverhill, MA and the note I hit was in Tuscaloosa, AL.  I missed it by a ton.  I missed the first four or five notes by the same astronomical unit before I stopped singing all together.  What the hell?  The note I can’t reach is in the second line, and I couldn’t hit anything in the first line.  Did my voice change?  Did I finally, finally, hit puberty?  Nope.  I don’t think so.  I think it was pollen.

The pollen outside right now is so thick you can sometimes see it floating on the breeze.  Our white car isn’t white anymore, it’s green.  Our black car isn’t black anymore, it’s green.  People with allergies must be barricading themselves indoors with a bottle of Clariton in each hand and a blanket over their heads.  I don’t usually have seasonal allergies, but over the last few weeks I’ve been having trouble breathing.  I’m stuffy enough to notice, but not enough to have issues with it.  I think that was the reason I couldn’t sing that line.  That has never, ever happened to me before and I hope it never happens again.

We practice at Mike the Bass Player’s house.  He had something going on that required him to step away for a short time.  That’s when things got goofy.  Greg randomly started singing some country song.  Kevin played it on his phone, and within five minutes the three of us were playing the song all the way though.  Then Kevin started listing off songs that were on his iTunes Rejected Lizardfish Songs playlist.  He mentioned a Bad Company song that I used to know and I started playing it.  Then we were all playing it.  Poorly, but playing it.  Then it was a Journey song.  I didn’t know it.  Kevin played it on his phone and then we were all playing it.  Poorly, again, but so what.  When Mike came back he joined in.  I think we ended up noodling around five or six songs that we either had never played before, or they had never played with me before.  It was kind of fun.  Hopefully some of them will make their way back into the rotation.

That brings me to the one guitar gear techie note from practice.  Last year I bought a digital delay pedal with a tap tempo switch and a subdivision calculator.  It’s a Wampler Faux Tape Echo.  You tap your foot in time to the music on the tap tempo switch and then select the note duration you want to echos to follow on the subdivision button.  It has quarter notes (which repeat at the same time your foot tapped), eighth notes (two echos per foot tap), half notes (one echo per two foot taps), and the magical dotted eighth note (where the echos come at the equivalent of an eighth note and a half).  I don’t often use a delay pedal for anything other than gimmicky effects.  Noise, mostly.  The tap tempo and the subdivision functions are nice to have, but I don’t often put them to use.

Then we played a U2 song.  The Edge, U2’s guitar player whose real name is Dave, uses the holy hell out of dotted eighth note delay times.  Practically his entire career is based on it.  David Gilmour used the same effect spectacularly on Pink Floyd’s The Wall and a slew of other records, but for most of us when we think delay tricks we think of U2.  Lizardfish used to play New Year’s Day.  That was one of the songs we almost brought back to life last night.  I finally had something that required my shiny new Wampler digital delay, and it worked like crazy!

But wait, there’s more!  Remember that Flock of Seagulls song that sounded like bird shit at the start of practice?  That has some delay on it too.  Oh wait, that has dotted eighth note delay on it!  We played it again to close the practice, I set up the delay time and the subdivision and HOLY SHIT!  All of the gaps were filled in, all of the missing pieces were there!  It sounded awesome!  Sure, we still screwed up coming out of the first chorus, but damn!  Success!  Thanks David Gilmour!  Thanks Dave The Edge Evans  Thanks Brian Wampler!

Something Big is Happening Today

When I started dating my wife her two kids were age 6 and 4.  After a few months I was introduced to the kids.  The six year old had just started 1st grade.  Fast forward to today… today is her last day of high school.  She graduates on Friday but today is her last day of class.

Oh how the time has flown.  It seems like yesterday we were outside the Chuck E Cheese in Framingham and she was nervously hiding behind her mom.  Yeah, I freaked her out that first day.  I guess I’m kinda huge and maybe intimidating.  I’m guessing by the time we went home that night she had learned what most people learn.  She learned that I am a push over and she could walk all over me.  Yup, I speak the truth.

She is one of, if not the, smartest people I know.  How do you quantify smarts?  I haven’t a clue.  I should ask her, because she’s pretty smart.  She is the valedictorian of her graduating class.  There are some super smart kids in her class and she managed to finish on top.  She’s super super smart.  I am so proud that I am having trouble functioning through day to day activities.  I feel like I am physically and mentally as proud as a human being can possibly get.  Then I look at her mother and realize her level of proudness leaves mine in the dust.  She looks like she’s about to explode with pride.  I don’t blame her.  Her daughter is pretty fricken amazing.

She is going off to college in the Fall, and that first step in the nest emptying process is going to hit us like a wrecking ball to the face.  Let’s not worry about that now though.  Let’s just celebrate the collective accomplishments of the last 12 years.  Let’s just celebrate how that nervous little first grader grew up to be such an amazing person, and how we know she’s going to make a difference.  If anyone is going to build the better mouse trap, it’s her.  I can’t wait to see what she does next, even though part of me is wishing we could roll back the clock to when she and her brother were small enough that we somehow invented a goofy game where I would pick them up and drop them onto mom’s bed and they would laugh like they were about to split.

BRING ON GAME SEVEN!!!

The hockey gods are merciful.  The hockey gods are kind.  The hockey gods smiled upon the Boston Bruins because the St Louis Blues dominated them like you wouldn’t believe for two periods and the Bruins still won 5-1.  It was brutal until the B’s started potting goals at will in the third.

Game seven is Wednesday night in Boston.  Clear my calendar!

Go Bruins!
