Four Random Thoughts

Here are four random thoughts buzzing around my pea brain at the moment.

First, continuing the Bad Sports Day for Boston from the previous post, Bruin Chris Kelly has a broken leg and is out indefinitely.

Second, My Kingdom for an DVI to HDMI adapter!  I discovered recently that most of the songs I want to record this month have already reached a near complete status that I have completely forgotten about reaching.  Unfortunately the .band files are all on the MacMini and I can’t find the cables we used to use to hook it up to the monitor, so I can’t get the files off of it!  Lunch break tomorrow includes a trip to radio shack.

Third, we learned a new downside of living on the edge of wild kingdom.  Just after we finished dinner tonight our neighborhood was engulfed in the stench of skunk.  Ah crud.

Fourth, my right ear is so completely blocked with wax right now that I am effectively deaf on that side.  This happens to me once every couple of years or so.  Where the hell did I leave that bottle of wax softener?

My wish to all of you, from your humble narrator, is that tomorrow is a better day than today was.  ‘Cause today was kind of a suck fest.

What is that Sound?

Listen closely to this video…

I had to run to the store for a minute. When I walked outside I heard the weirdest sound. I assume it’s a bird, but could it be something else? It sort of sounds like a turkey, but I can’t tell for sure.

You are going to have to crank the volume to hear the sound on the video. It sounded like it was moving away from me and by the time I got the phone out to try and capture the sound it was too far away to really come through. On top of that you have wind, and water running down the gutter on the side of the garage, and water dripping out of a hole right near the end of the gutter too. You probably will only hear this with headphones on and the volume way up, but give it a try and tell me if you know what bird or animal makes that sound.

Hawks

This post references this older post.

Did you read the old post?  It’s a short one, but very cool.

Today I saw the hawk again.  I was outside shoveling and I heard a ruckus coming from high above me.  The hawk was being chased out of the trees a street or two away from us by three very noisy crows.  Mr hawk was just casually flying away.  I wonder if he had a baby crow, or an egg or something as he was laughing in the face of the crows he had just violated.  He flew over my head into the woods behind my house.  Once or twice he bobbed and weaved as the crows got close enough to touch him, but otherwise he was just casual.

Then I saw something even better.  Hawk number two!  Hawk number two came out of the trees from the direction that hawk number one was headed and just leisurely flew past the others.  I was expecting number two to kick some ass on those three crows.  I mean, three crows vs two hawks pretty much equals two hawks eating crows for lunch, but no.  Number two just flew away.  He/she was pretty  ambivalent about the whole thing.

Eventually I lost them all in the trees.  A few minutes later the three crows came back out, heading home.  I guess hawk number one showed mercy on them.

I love where we live.  Our house is in a city.  Not a big one, but a city nonetheless.  Our home, however, is right in the middle of wild kingdom.  We have hawks, we have deer, we have all sorts of birds I’ve never seen while living in the suburbs.  I love it.  I really love where we live.
