Last Night

Last night was a fun night. A number of the ladies of the game night group went out to dinner together, so one of my oldest and best friends ever, Larry, and I hung out at his house. It was kinda like old times except it wasn’t. This time we were joined by a six year old. Instead of the usual stressing about life and the trials and tribulations of taking a shot at the whole adulting thing, we watched Larry’s son drive his RC car up and down the driveway. It was great!

We took a shot at watching Highlander while editing it for television on the fly. You edit movies on the fly through the use of the fast forward function, reaching out and covering little peoples’ eyes, and strategic use of singing, “La La La!” really loud. We were successful for a good part of the movie, but once you get into the last third of it the intensity ramps up, as does the violence, so we stopped. It’s okay, Highlander will still be there the next time. Someday that six year old little man will be old enough to sit on the couch next to his old man and watch the greatest movie even made about an immortal sword fighter from 16th century Scotland and his adventures in New York in 1985. After all, there can be only one.

The initial plans for last night also included Mike the Lizardfish Bass Player, but he had spent the previous two days on top of a mountain and probably needed some sleep… and maybe some Tylenol or something. That just means we have to try it again soon.

As I was getting ready to leave, Larry’s son told me I should just stay over. “You can have your own room,” he said. He’s the same age now that my step daughter was when I first came into their lives. If you could go back in time to any point prior to 2007 and ask me what I think about kids… my response probably wouldn’t have been all that positive. Not bad, really, just indifferent. I didn’t think I wanted kids. I had almost no experience with them. A few little cousins and small amounts of time with friends’ kids. Not enough to form an informed opinion.

Today, I have two step kids, three nephews, one niece, and a whole pile of friends with kids of their own. Ask me how I feel about kids now? I’ll tell you. They are the best thing that could ever have happened to our universe. My step kids… I can’t rave about them enough. There are no adjectives in the English language that can accurately describe just how much I love those two people. I don’t know how I got so damn lucky. I mean first I meet Jen and fall in love with her, then her kids are both superhuman amazing? What did I do to deserve this, and how can I guarantee that it will last forever?

Thanks to Larry and his son for having me over last night. I had a lot of fun. It was great to see you guys again.

Know what else is great? When I got home I had to bring the trash barrels in from the street. As I was carrying them up to the garage, my beloved bride, Jen pulled into the driveway. We were about three minutes away from getting home at exactly the same time. If you didn’t know better, you’d think we were meant to be. You’d be right, we were meant to be.

Harry Potter Blues

So have you read the script for the new Harry Potter play? I bought a copy on the day it was released, but I hadn’t read more than the first two scenes. Wednesday was the first day my step kids were at our house since the release and my step son had already finished it. He asked me, begged me, pleaded with me (I exaggerate some) to finish it so that we could discuss it.

I actually have a lot of work to do this weekend, but… my step son needed me. I dove into the script and read about 80% of it. Sadly, reading on an iPad does wonderfully awful things to my eyes and I am seeing double now and have lost the ability to see anything at all. My eyes are literally too tired to function.

I still have 20% of the text to get through. My step son needs me! He needs me to know the whole story! I can’t let him down! Harry Potter needs to be completed before the sun comes up!

Revenge (Sort of)

Remember when you were a kid and you did something wrong. What was one of the things your parents might have said to you? “I hope you grow up to have kids that are just like you!” Today is an example of that particular mother’s curse coming true. Sort of. Not really, but sort of.

My sister is three years older than me. My brother is six years younger. Starting from my sister’s 5th or 6th grade year and carrying through in an unbroken line until my brother graduated high school, my parents were subjected to at least one but sometimes two school Christmas concerts per year.

As band geeks, we thought they were pretty cool. As parents… it must have been no less than the tortures of the damned. Every year the same small group of Christmas songs over and over and over again. The only differences being the slight changes in interpretation made by the band directors from elementary school to junior high to high school. My poor, poor parents. It must have been unbearable.

Now they get their revenge. Sort of. Between my two step kids there will be more Christmas concerts this year than you can possibly imagine. One kid has a concert with his guitar teacher. Both kids have concerts with their piano teacher. One kid has a concert with the middle school. The other kid has concerts with the high school. Oh my sweet goodness there are four (4) (FOUR!!!!) Christmas concerts this year alone!

Now I make no attempts to hide the fact that after all of my Christmas concerts, I pretty much hate Christmas music. I’ll tolerate it for a brief period leading up to, and immediately after Christmas itself, but otherwise? It makes my skin crawl and my teeth ache. Really.

Having said that though, I can say that the mother’s Christmas concert curse doesn’t really bother me the way it should. Why? Because while I hate Christmas music with a burning, undying passion, I love listening to the kids play. I’ll grit my teeth and struggle through the agony of listening to everyone else’s kids have their turns at the various recitals, but when my step kids are on the stage? Well, that is one of the greatest things ever. Guitar, piano, chorus, choir, concert band, jazz band. I love it all. I love hearing them strut their stuff on the various instruments they play. It helps that they are so much better than I ever was, but it’s not just that. I love to see them enjoying it.

Music is near the top of the list of the greatest things humans can do with their time, and it is such a thrill to see the two kids loving it as much as I do.

Sorry mom and dad, but this particular revenge isn’t so bad.

Happy Birthday, Mom

We celebrated my mother’s 75th birthday today.  Everyone wish her a happy birthday!

My Aunt brought a couple of old pictures with her.  There is a red head in this one who is the spitting image of my nephew…

Look at that handsome devil!  He and my nephew could be twins!  Who is that fine looking dude?  It’s me!  Can you believe it?  My sister’s son and I are twins, just 40 years removed.  Not sure how the logistics work there though.

Now check out this happy family snapshot…

The fine looking dude in the coat in the center of the pic is once again your humble narrator.  I’m standing on my dad’s lap.  My mother is to our right.  My sister is photo bombing on the lower right corner.  Behind me is my aunt Nancy.  I assume the guy whose face is blocked is Uncle Tom.  The other happy couple is the really important part of this picture.  They are Nana and Papa.  My mother’s parents.

I was at Middlesex in my late 20’s when my grandmother passed away.  I was fortunate enough to have such a stellar person in my life for a very long time.  My grandfather however passed away in 1972.  I was only a year old.  Obviously I have no memories of him, but I knew that I had met him at least.  I always had that.

Now thanks to this picture I have proof.  Aunt Nancy brought this today to show how much my nephew resembles me.  I don’t think she realized that it would mean so much to me for another reason.  I’m very thankful she brought it.  It’s got to be one of, if not the, only picture of me and my Papa.

Today is a Milestone Day

Today marks a very important milestone for my family.

We spent the whole weekend celebrating it, but today is the day it becomes official.

My step daughter is a teenager. Today is her 13th birthday.

Let’s all sing Happy Birthday!

Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday dear >name redacted due to security agreement<
Happy birthday to you!

She was six when I first met her. She has grown up so much in that time. I am very proud of everything she’s accomplished so far, and I can’t wait to see what she has in store for her in the future.

One of Those Days, in a Good Way

I am having one of those days where I am reminded how fortunate I am to have won the love of my wife, and how that luck is multiplied many times over that I have also won the love of my two step kids.

I honestly believe that I am the luckiest man alive. I could not possibly be happier than I am being a part of this family. I love them all so very much.
