Mission of Burma Videos

I’ve never heard of Aquarium Drunkard. Fortunately they have heard of Mission of Burma and they posted four videos of the band playing in Infrasonic Studios. Click the link above for the actual post. Robbie the content whore will now post the videos here as well.

Thanks!

A post on Rush is a Band today gave a link to a page that is posting links to scans of old Rush magazine articles. It is called Rush: A Brief History of Time. Enjoy.

Dan Brown and TMHS

I have been listening to Dan “Da Vinci Code” Brown’s latest book, The Lost Symbol.

I am getting really frustrated with it. I’m not going to stop until it’s finished, but I just want to smack the guy. I understand that the book is supposed to be suspenseful. I get it. I understand that the whole thing is a mystery. I get that too. But give me a fricken break Dan! In almost every single chapter a character learns a piece of the puzzle. That’s expected, right? In just about every case the character keeps it to himself for the next three chapters or so. I continuously find myself saying, “Well I’m glad some one knows what’s going on.” In one case character A shows character B something on a computer. It completely changes the way character B behaves for the rest of the book. I’m 90 or so chapters removed from that action and I still don’t have any idea what character B saw. At least some one knows what’s going on, right?

I am also pretty sick of feeling like I am being patronized by a smart ass teacher. Brown has a way of having one character reveal supposedly hidden information to another character by making the second character piece together the clues. The first character ends up looking like a grade school teacher trying to lead a kid to the answer to a math problem. That’s all well and good when you have no idea what the teacher character is getting at, but when you can see the damn answer 10 miles away it gets really annoying.

I’ve completed three of Dan Brown’s novels. Angels and Demons and The Da Vinci Code were both excellent. (Like a lot of people who read both, I kinda liked A&D better, despite the fact that Da Vinci sold 10-20 gazillion copies. I also read the book Holy Blood, Holy Grail, the one whose authors accused Brown of stealing when he wrote Da Vinci. Let’s just say, I see their point.) I read another one that I think was called Digital Fortress and I didn’t really like it. It was okay. Nothing special. I figured out the ending long before the characters did. That made the ending anti-climactic to the point of shear boredom. Sorry Dan. I started reading another one… I can’t recall the title… the one about finding aliens in the ice near the North Pole… and I just couldn’t get into it and eventually put it down and forgot about it.

The Lost Symbol isn’t bad, it just seems like this time he’s trying WAY too hard to keep up the suspense. We’re the audience Dan, ya gotta give us some of the information or we’re just going to get bored and go home. Also, not every obscure nugget of historical information is unknown to all of us. Some of us know about some of the things you talk about. Stop treating your PHD characters (and thus your readers) like first graders learning about addition. We, the readers, do occasionally know some shit without you guiding us to it. Oh and I’m on chapter 103 or something like that… still no idea what the historical significance of that knife is, although at least two characters know all about it. Still don’t know what Bellamy saw in the jungle, although at least two characters do. We’re the readers Dan, we need the info. Oh, and the whole drowning sequence that you’ve used twice in this book? You’ve used that before too. Stuff like that makes me start thinking of adjectives like, “Hack.” Sorry Dan.

Okay… now that that’s done…

My home town is trying to destroy my High School! Tewksbury is having a vote this weekend on whether or not to build a new high school. It sounds like it’s one of those issues that the towns folks are really rallying around. There was a town meeting this week to decide if the question would be placed on this weekend’s ballot and people were getting the word out all over the place. Now that it is on the ballot signs are up everywhere. There were even people holding signs on main street this morning…

Where do I stand on the issue?

I could care less.

I don’t live in Tewksbury, I could give a rats ass what they do with the building I went to school in 20 years ago. I don’t have any particular rosy fondness for my high school days. Frankly, as long as the money they use to pay for the high school doesn’t cost any teachers (specifically my big sister) or cops or firemen their jobs then go ahead and build whatever the hell you want.

It’s fun to take a real political stand like that once in a while, isn’t it?

Out of Order

It’s usually Jen who calls me to tell me there is traffic trouble.

Over the last couple of months Jen has been getting out the door to work before me. Every now and then I’ll get a phone call as I’m walking out the door telling me to avoid a some section of some road. These days much of our routes to work are similar, so whoever gets out first can give a heads up to trouble spots to the other. It works out nicely when things on the roads are bad.

Today somehow I ended up leaving first. Sure enough, right about the time route 93 reached route 495 there was a traffic jam. I was finally able to call Jen and return the traffic report favor.

It turned out to be this

and the back up wasn’t all that long. Still, she managed to get around it. I hope I helped.

In other news, most of the NHL gets back in business tonight. The Bruins play the Evil Ones (Montreal) at 7:00. The trade deadline is tomorrow and I fear that the Bruins will be silent this year. The general manager has been talking about making changes ever since the early days of the 10 game losing streak yet somehow nothing ever happened. Now that he’s down to the last 30 hours or so I sort of expect the nothing to continue. I don’t know what the issue is but I have two guesses. Either our GM is over confident about the abilities of his seventh place team, or he’s too nervous to pull the trigger on a big deal. My hunch tells me the biggest move we’ll see is a mid level draft pick traded for a third line player, or something like that. Prove me wrong Peter. Prove me wrong.

It looks like Jen’s office has shut down access to Google Talk again so I logged into Google Wave for the first time in a while. I seem to have a bunch of new contacts and I haven’t a clue who any of them are. Interesting.

Now I will leave you with two songs from Phineas and Ferb.

Evil Love Song:

March 1st

Well it’s March 1st, that means another RPM Challenge has come and gone without me. I haven’t done anything since my marathon bass recording afternoon last Tuesday. I am now officially behind last year’s pace. I went to alonetone.com today and looked at the massive number of users uploading their finished projects and I actually felt a little jealous.

I will finish… someday. Then again I am still saying that about the 2007 and 2008 challenges. Someday.

Speaking of music there are a few shows that are either on the horizon or in the rumor mill that have me wanting to go hear some live music. I mentioned Jeff Beck the other day. That show is on a kid night in April so it’s not going to happen. Paul McCartney has released a number of dates, mostly out west, and we have been lead to believe there may be a Boston show in the works. Jen and I are huge Beatles fans and would love to see Paul again. Jen’s mother is a bigger Beatles fan than either of us and wants to go and get the best seats possible. Even bigger than Paul (to me at least, maybe not to Jen or her mother) is the rumored summer Rush tour. I haven’t missed Rush on a tour since 1987 and I don’t care if I have to go without food for a couple of weeks, I am going to see them on the next tour too.

I wonder if I’ll be able to sneak my huge Nikon D90 into a Rush show the way Jen snuck our Casio as-small-as-a-credit-card camera in to two Rush shows last tour.

What else can I write about that I haven’t already? Oh yeah, the weekend!

On Saturday we paid a visit to Mike and Tammmy’s house. It was the four of us, the three of them, and Larry, Nawal, their baby, and Nawal’s mother. We played Wii, we ate a great dinner, we had a great dessert, and we all enjoyed hanging out together. Speaking for myself, I had a really good time.

Sunday we had Jen’s mom and step father over. They lost electricity during last week’s storms and only just got it back tonight (finally!). They came over to use our shower and our washer/dryer. Jen made a wonderful spaghetti lunch/dinner and then took her daughter to a birthday party. The rest of us stayed home to watch the Olympic gold medal hockey game and the pain is still fresh so I ain’t going there.

Next weekend there is a rumored game night on Saturday but there are no details yet. On Sunday we have been invited to a Moroccan dinner at Larry and Nawal’s. Nawal promised to make something for Mike in exchange for helping with some heavy lifting while their house was being redecorated. On Sunday she pays up and we have been invited to join them. There is also talk of trying to get out to see Avatar (finally) in an IMAX theater. I am hoping that happens.

In the mean time… the Bruins are back, I have a couple of new C#/.net books to pour through, I have hopes of getting up early and recording some rhythm guitar parts (never say die!), and just generally spending time with the woman I love more than I’ve ever loved anything or anyone in my entire life (combined!).

And that my friends is the state of the Robert as it stands tonight.

Thanks for coming and don’t forget to tip your waitress.

Back to Work

Two weeks ago we had a holiday on Monday and I took Friday off. Last week I took Monday and Tuesday off. That means the last two work weeks I only worked three days per week.

No such luck this week though. A full five day week. As you can probably imagine, I really want another short week. I want to go back to bed!

What a Fantastic Game

Canada took the gold medal. My hockey heart is broken.

But what a game it was! USA scores with just a few seconds left in the third to tie it and send it into overtime. Then Sidney Crosby scored the game winner to give Canada the gold and the United States the silver.

I had a professor at UMass Lowell who was a basketball fanatic. Whenever he needed an integer for a code example he always used six and would tell us that it was the number of the greatest basketball player of all time. Celtic Bill Russel.

Invariably he would have students challenge that bold statement and he would always fire back with a listing of the championships he won. He won the NCAA championship when he was in college, then went pro and won the NBA championship in every season he was healthy. Literally, the only time he failed to grab the title with the Celtics was when he was injured.

While Russel was playing for the Celtics Wilt Chamberlin was winning all of the individual awards in the league. Who was better? Chamberlin who scored a gazillion points, or Russel who always lead his team to victory.

I think it’s pretty easy to decide. Russel. It’s pro sports, winning is everything.

The same debate is happening on hockey these days. Who is better, Crosby or Ovetchkin. Ovetchkin wins the goal scoring races and the MVP awards, but in just a few short years Crosby has won a Stanley Cup championship and an Olympic gold medal. Who is the better player? The one with the better numbers or the won with the titles? Clearly it’s Crosby and his titles.

Congratulations to Canada. Congratulations too to team USA. They really were an after thought in these games, and to win their way into the gold medal game… just a fantastic achievement.

If the NHL does not participate in the 2014 games it will be an even worse decision than locking out an entire season. Just wait to see what we do next time.

Now…

Let’s go Bruins!
