Another test of my DSLR in bulb mode. This time it worked. I turned off all of the lights, pointed the camera at a candle on the other side of the room, and locked the shutter open for a smidge more than two minutes.

Bulb
Today’s lunch time photography experiment involved using my DSLR in bulb mode. I went outside, put on the ND filter, pointed the camera at some clouds, plugged in the wired remote shutter, put the shutter into bulb mode, Clicked the remote and walked away for five minutes, then walked back and released the shutter.
Technically everything worked just as planned except that I ended up with a solid white image. So… Yeah. I want to try that at night and see if I can get some star trails. Hopefully the problem was the sunshine and not anything mechanical or code or anything. The next clear night I am going to try it. If it works digital I will try it with film too.
The good news though, there were birds.
Amphibious Visitor
Well that was weird. Doubly weird because it’s the second time it’s happened.
We’ve been in this house for almost 12 years. Once, maybe 5-6 years ago, we had this weird episode where a toad hopped out of the fireplace. The fireplace hadn’t been lit in years, so Mr Toad was not on fire, but somehow or other he got into the house through the chimney. We had all sorts of weird theories. Maybe a hawk picked him up from the ground then flew over the house and dropped him? Maybe? Whatever, we had a frogger in the house and we had to get rid of it.
Well, it happened again today. Jen was in her office upstairs, I was in my office downstairs. She was actually conducting a job interview for some lucky person who might get the chance to be her co-worker when Mr Toad’s Wild Ride hopped into the room. It was covered in dirt and dust and clearly scared shitless. She texted me asking for help. I thought she was referring to a blood sugar monitor update Harry was sleeping through so I went to Harry’s room first and made sure all was well. It was. Then I walked back to the office to give a thumbs up and I happened to look down and there was a small amphibian on the floor.
I scooped it up into a Tupperware container and took it outside to let it go. Granted, before I took it outside I went back to the cellar and grabbed a camera. I mean, it’s still me. I let our Frogger friend out of the container near the bird feeders. It is now free. At least until a bird comes and takes another crack at it. Assuming it was a bird that got it up onto the roof. Assuming that’s how it got into the house. Assuming assuming assuming.
ADDENDUM: Google solved the mystery! I searched for toad and chimney and got a whole bunch of hits for stories of the same thing happening. Turns out it wasn’t a toad, it was a Grey Tree Frog! No one carried it to the roof, it climbed up a tree and jumped in itself! You go, Mr Frog! You’re a little amphibious superstar!
Happy International Cat Day
Today is International Cat Day! I don’t know what that means, but let’s go!
Double Exposure Cat!
Birds: MIA
At lunch I went outside for a few minutes to see if I could snaps a couple of birds-at-the-bird-feeders pics.
Just look at them all. Birds galore.
>Sigh of frustration<
Even Patches is pissed about it.
No Birds
I brought my camera outside while I was cooking dinner on the grill. I figured in between burger flips I’d take some bird pics at the bird feeders.
Yup. Look at all of those birds. So many birds. Ugh.
I took some other stuff to pass the time.
Stupid birds.
Luxury
Would you consider Bang & Olufsen headphones to be a luxury item? If they aren’t then they are as close to a luxury item as I can get.
Also, blurry background. Rob’s just showing off now.
Foreground Blur
I talk about blurry backgrounds a lot. Well what about blurry foregrounds?
It sorta worked.
Double Exposure
Last night I was poking around in the menus for my DSLR and I found a setting for multiple exposures. I never noticed it before because it is not available when you’re in auto mode. Now that I am a Manual Mode kinda guy (he said with epic bravado) I can use the setting.
Oh yeah, we’re all about to get really really bored with all the multiple exposure crap-ola coming our way.
Digital vs Analog Comparison
I started the film page with the idea that I wouldn’t post film images on this page (unless they were reblogged from the other page). I also said I was going to post digital vs film comparisons because… because. So I guess that allows me to post a few film pics, right?
Last week I put on a record and took a spinning media picture. Pretty sure I posted it here. I also took about the same shot with the Nikon Ebay film camera too. I think everything about the digital pic is better, but I also think I prefer the film pic. Maybe I am just an old fashioned sucker.
This one is digital:
This one is film:
Isn’t that interesting?
Now we move to Methuen’s little downtown area, specifically the used record store. I’ve taken this three times, one digital and two film, one with each camera. The two Nikons have a wider lens than the Pentax, so the Pentax is zoomed in much more than the other two, but you’ll get the gist of it.
This one is digital, it’s also portrait:
This one is film from the Nikon and it’s landscape:
This one is Dad’s Pentax. Like I said, it’s zoomed in more. It also has a coloring that might be from the roll of film or it might be from scanning it with my iPhone or maybe it might be because it was within about an hour after sunrise while the other two were later in the morning. I don’t know exactly, but I kinda like it.
Which one do I like best? I think the second one. The Nikon film one. I think I will do the Pentax one again at some point. If I do, I won’t get it developed at CVS and I won’t be scanning it with my iPhone.
Now I just have to try to remember not to reblog whatever posts these film shots end up on. I can do that (but I’ll probably fail).
