Traditions

Daily writing prompt
What traditions have you not kept that your parents had?

There aren’t a lot of family traditions that my parents kept that I do not. The big one that comes to mind is religion. My parents were raised catholic and they raised the three of us to be catholic. Somewhere along the line I realized I didn’t believe any of it. Even when I was going to church every Sunday as a kid, I don’t think I believed any of it. I went through the motions, but I never felt it. My brother is still faithful. My sister… I don’t really know one way or another. Me? Atheist. The tradition I don’t keep is going to church.

Rant beginning

I thought the whole priests-systematically-raping-children-then-covering-it-up-for-each-other thing would have brought more people to my way of thinking, but I also thought fascists running the government would have brought people to my little corner of the political spectrum (closer to it at least) but that didn’t seem to happen either, so what do I know.

Rant over. Sorry.

  1. I come from an atheist family. My grandpa was a specialist for Nietzsche and my parents had a bible in their huge library under ‘fiction’. My mother died happily. She thought that nothingness is freedom. I am not religious either. I have one sister who is interested in Buddhism.
I suppose, Christianity is one of the world’s evils.

    1. I am not a religious zealot, but saying Christianity is a world’s evil maybe going a little overboard. All religions have issues and that is because they are run by humans. I believe the reason any religion exists is because people needed rules to follow in order to get along and survive way back in the past. Religions have evolved over time (some not for the better). I don’t put much stock in Old Testament teachings, but the New Testament, if one readings it purely for historical reasons, does not teach hate of anyone. Believing or not believing is an individual choice, but painting all Christianity (or any other religion) as evil, is exactly what Christianity and other religion are suppose to be against.

      1. Well, nice that you see it like this.
Look at the middle ages and the age of reasoning, the wars in central Europe, the crusades, the burning of the witches and heretics. How it blocked scientific progress and look how fundamentalist christian groups act in the US and other parts of the world.
Anyway, you see it your way I see it in my way.
        Thanks for your answer
