I think I might take my Big Muff clone off of my pedal board. It sounds great, but it just can’t compete with the klone/OCD combo. I’m just not using it enough to justify carrying it around. I’ve been using a Wren and Cuff Super Russian on the band board and either a Wren and Cuff Tri Pi ’70 or a Way Huge Russian Pickle on the stay-at-home board. I will probably keep one of them on the stay-at-home, but I don’t use it very often at home anymore either.
It makes me sad. My NYC reissue EHX Big Muff Pi was the cause of me becoming a pedal junkie in the first place. It opened the flood gates in a way no guitar gear ever had before. It feels like I’m turning my back on a hero. What to do, what to do.
The Tumnus/OCD combo I have on the band board sounded pretty great at practice this weekend though. I did use the Big Muff on one song, and tried it on another but the other guys complained that something sounded wrong. I switched back and they were happy. So was I, though I was also sad.
I did last year’s RPM Challenge with the Tumnus as my only source of dirt. Maybe next month I’ll do NaSoAlMo using just the Super Russian. Probably not, more likely it will be the KTR, but maybe. Who knows.
