| Body | The topic around here has been vacations for a while now.
Lisa and Ken spent their honeymoon on a cruise to Alaska. As it turns out, my brother did the same thing last year, my friend Mike (who we’ll be visiting out in Sunny Wisconsin this week) went in 2004, and now I guess the word on the street is Maria the Drummer is going to be doing the same trip next year. My friend Larry is going away for a few days this week. My parents skipped off to Southern Connecticut in July for their 40th anniversary. Jen and I are going to Wisconsin for a week (starting tomorrow) and then a few weeks from now we’re doing a long weekend in New York. Looking into the future, my cousin Tom is trying to set up an extended family trip to the MotherLand (well, one of the motherlands at least), Newfoundland. I’ve never been there, but I would love to go to connect with my roots, ya know? I, who gets sea sick when I go deep sea fishing, wants to connect to my fisherman family’s past. If it happens it probably won’t be for a couple of years, but it probably will happen. As it turns out I am still reading Neil Peart‘s book Ghost Rider, which details a year’s worth of cross continental wanderings by motorcycle. I was thinking about that book in conjunction with all the vacationing… Larry was considering doing his trip via motorcycle and we discussed the luggage capacity of his bike (a topic I knew zero about prior to reading about Peart loading up his BMW). Then today, about two days after the Newfy trip discussions began, I was reading along and Peart quotes “I’se The B’y” when talking about his travels on the island. “Fogo Twillingate Moreton’s Harbour / All around the circle!” I think that’s some weird literary-based-fate telling me I gots to go to Newfy. Along with a brief Let’s Go To Newfoundland ra-ra, this blog entry serves another purpose… it allows me to waste time. I still have to pack, I still have to get my general shit together before our 4pm Labor Day (Would it be Labour Day in Newfy?) cookout which is followed by the pre-flight nap. (our flight is just after dawn tomorrow… not much sleep to be had tonight, eh?) I’ve got things to do and I’m not doing them. But I’m on vacation so I’ll just say, screw it… all will come out in the end, eh? |
