| Body | The Lizard Lounge’s website said doors open at 7:00, Kay Hanley goes on at 7:30. There was a separate admission show with doors opening at 9:30 so the Kay Hanley crowd would have to be cleared out at 9:00.
I walked through the parking lot (thanks Jen!) at a couple of minutes past 7:00 and I could hear the band playing inside. When I got to the door however there was a line. The doors had yet to open, so I got in line and waited. And waited. And waited. At 7:35 (five minutes after the scheduled show time) the line started moving. I got into the room and settled in against the back wall. Because of my freakish height I tend to gravitate toward the back of rooms in order to not block out other people’s view. A few minutes after 8:00 the band took to the stage. They still had to stop at 9:00, but instead of getting a 90 minute show we were getting a 55 minute show. Very much the let down. Fortunately it was an excellent 55 minutes. If the show was any indication, the second Kay Hanley solo lp is going to squish the first one. It might have been the best I’ve seen her since Letters to Cleo broke up. Now on to the pictures. Of course. I like the Lizard Lounge. It’s really small and cozy and a great place to go and listen to live music. The one drawback, from a camera geek point of view, is that there is no stage. The band sets up on a carpet in the middle of the room with audience surrounding on three sides. It’s a nice set up, but the band isn’t elevated, so if some mildly tall person stands in front of you, you don’t see. If it weren’t for the camera I wouldn’t care, but I had the camera and I do care. There were about three rows of people between me and the band. If I looked over one person’s shoulder and one other person shifted his weight to his left foot I would be able to zoom way in and get a shot of Kay. Otherwise I was pretty much out of luck. As the show wore on the crowd in front of me thinned out a little and I was able to see 4 out of 5 band members There was a ceiling support between me and the keyboard player so no amount of crowd movie would bring him into the shot. Sorry. This is sort of what the stage looked like from my point of view. If I zoomed way in I could get a shot of Kay. If I didn’t zoom in far enough I’d get a the backs of people’s heads too.
After a while the crowd shifted a bit and I could actually get shots of everyone except the keyboard player. But let’s face it. The only thing the camera wanted to see was Kay. Sunday is the Brad Delp tribute. There won’t be any pictures from that one unless they are camera phone pictures. |
