Body It’s about 20 minutes to 1:00am on Wednesday morning.  I am on call right now and, as is often the case, am having a hard time getting to sleep.  I don’t really expect they’ll have any problems that are serious enough to call in the cavalry, but it still messes with my internal sleep schedule.  I’ll be a basket case tomorrow afternoon, but I’ll be able to go to bed early and make up for it.

The musical summer continues.  I am going to see Kay Hanley at the Lizard Lounge on Friday.  Jen has the kids so she won’t be joining me.  Mike in Wisconsin is jealous that he can’t go.  Larry is going to pass as he’s not a big fan of Kay the Solo Artist.  I definitely see his point.  Kay on her own pales to her Letters to Cleo days, but I still like it.  Maybe I’m just more of a sucker for a gig.  Maybe it’s nostalgia… now there’s a gross little thought.  Am I going to go see 2/5 of Letters to Cleo in an effort to relive the days when I saw them at The Paradise every couple of months?  Or that short but fantastic set on Boston Common shortly after their second record came out?  Maybe.  I try not to dwell on thoughts like that.  It makes me feel old, and even worse it makes me feel like I’m standing still… even if I clearly am.

Last week we went to see Jennifer Tefft at the Lizard Lounge.  It was the first time seeing her band in quite a long time as she had left the biz behind to have a family (I think… that’s what I heard) and is now starting to get back into things.  The show was excellent, and her new cd is excellent too.  My only beef about the record is that it sounds a bit too much like the last one.  Normally that would be a major hang up for me, but in this case it’s not.  I like the disc a lot and am very happy she decided to make another one.

This Sunday I am going to the venue-formerly-known-as-Harborlights to see the Brad Delp tribute show.  I am looking forward to this show, but I’m developing mixed feelings.  Larry and I were talking about it earlier and we agree that seeing Boston without Brad Delp is going to be a little painful.  (Not to mention Beatlejuice and RTZ without Brad Delp.)  The voice was so distinctive that I think it be a little disappointing to hear those songs without him.  I also read that the  other Boston singer, Fran Cosmo (who I think was also in the band Orion the Hunter who is on the bill) has a throat condition that requires surgery and will keep him from singing.  So I have no idea who will be covering.  It might even end up being a different voice on every song (Boston is supposed to play from 9:55 to 10:55… assuming my internet research is accurate) which is going to be bad.  Just bad.  But, on the upside, I’ll get to see Farrenheit for the first time since 1989 or so.

To top off the great musical summer, Mission of Burma has announced a handful of shows next month.  Jen has agreed to go to one with me, assuming I can get tickets.  In my experience there seem to be two types of people:  Those who think Burma is the greatest band the city of Boston (and possibly any city anywhere) has ever produced… in other words, people like me, and those who just don’t get it… in other words the 99.999% of the population of the free world who would prefer root canal surgery to giving Vs a listen.  I’m hoping Jen does not fall into the second category.  We’ll see.

Jen and I were talking about a report she read recently about businesses checking the myspace and facebook profiles of employment candidates and including them in the decision to hire or not to hire.  For instance, would a company hire some one who includes pictures that clearly show them in a state of intoxication?  Do you want to hire some one who enjoys being drunk so much that they include it in their profile?  Or, would you hire some one who writes a blog that is full of spelling and grammar errors?  Is that the type of communication skills you are looking for?

I can see it from the employer’s point of view.  If you are going to hire some one how can it hurt to do a little research into them.  Profiles such as these are public information and therefore fare game.

I can also see it from the employee’s point of view.  There is a difference between Rob the private citizen and Rob the professional.  Granted I’m a boring enough individual that there isn’t a whole lot of difference.  Let’s just say that I don’t plan on watching Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter on my computer at work.
(“Is that you Bowl of Cherrys?”
“When was the last time a bowl of cherrys talked to you?”
“I don’t know… I’ve seen some weird stuff in my time.”)

Furthermore, I may be verbally challenged but I know how to write.  Just because I post blogs that are written in as informal a style as humanly possible (is “unformal” a word?  If it is, it applies.) Doesn’t mean I’m going to do the same in a professional setting.

So we all need to recognize that myspace and facebook profiles (does anyone use friendster anymore?) are public representations of private people, not a public representation of professional people.  Get the distinction?  It sounded much better when Jen and I were talking about it over dinner.

The solution to the problem is, if you are sending out resumes make your profile private.  It also couldn’t hurt to make sure you don’t give your employer the email address your profile is filed under.  Once you have the job you can make the profile public again.  Just cover your job-searching ass.

I have been following the Red Sox very closely this season, but I have not really been watching them all that much.  Last night I watched the entire game and they won with Tim Wakefield taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning.  Tonight Jen and I watched the game and they won it with two runs in the bottom of the ninth.  Is it possible that I have somehow become the good luck charm they’ve been lacking while the lead over the Yankees has shrunk down to 4 games?  (it’s actually back up to 5 now I think… the Sox won and the Yankees were getting slaughtered by Baltimore.)

Bullshit.  Or is it?

It is now about 20 minutes to 2:00am on a Wednesday morning.  I think I have flaked long enough that I’ll be able to get 4-5 hours sleep tonight.  Assuming of course that my cell phone doesn’t ring.

Please don’t ring!

Good night
